When arriving by train

In addition to the unique travel situation in Luxembourg, there are a few other things that you should know when you arrive here by train.

First, there are three official languages in Luxembourg: French, German, and Luxembourgish. You can expect signs to feature a combination but don’t expect much English. Install a translator app on your phone or take a phrasebook if you don’t speak any of these languages.

Luxembourg is a very rich country and the prices may reflect this. Public transport is free but accommodation, food, and entertainment are not. They use Euros here, so we recommend stocking up (you can also use debit cards and credit cards) and checking the price of everything in advance.

Most important train companies in Luxembourg

If you’re traveling by rail within Luxembourg, you will be using the services provided by CFL, which is owned by the state of Luxembourg. If you are looking to purchase Luxembourg train tickets to leave or enter the country, the most common providers are the following:

  • SNCF: As the national railway of France, SNCF operates a number of routes into France and from France, including the train from Luxembourg to Paris. These trains are often branded as TGV, which stands for Train à Grande Vitesse and essentially means “high-speed train”. It is SNCF’s high-speed rail service.
  • SNCB Belgium: SNCB is the national rail provider of Belgium. It also goes by the name NMBS. Both of these names mean “National Railway Company of Belgium”, but one is in Dutch and the other is in French. SNCB operates trains in and out of Belgium, including popular routes to Brussels.

Most important trains in Luxembourg

As noted previously, domestic trains are provided by CFL and are free of charge. You don’t need to acquire any tickets either. However, the offer of free public transportation doesn’t extend outside Luxembourg, even if the small European nation is your departure location. In such cases, you will need to book international trains from one of the providers outlined above.

Take a look below for more information on these Luxembourg train types and remember that you can book all international train tickets right here on Omio.

Domestic trains

Domestic Luxembourg trains run on several major lines and typically make several stops. It is a very well-maintained and modernized network. Considering public transport is free, you could be forgiven for expecting poorly run trains, but that isn’t the case. The trains are often very clean and efficient. Many of them also have screens showing the multiple stops they will make and ensuring you know which one is coming next.

Luxembourg train tickets are not needed for residents or tourists, but everyone is advised to take a form of ID with them. The trains typically have a pair of seats on either side, with plenty of luggage storage space above the seats. You will struggle to find any kind of power sockets on these trains and they don’t have dining cars either. But it’s worth remembering that Luxembourg is very small, so domestic trains rarely have long to travel and even the longest trips only take an hour or so.

There are still staff members on these trains. Obviously, they are not there to check if you have your ticket, but they will be able to assist if you have any issues or questions.

Cross-border trains

This is where things really get interesting when it comes to cross-border trains. The fact that Luxembourg is so small and has so many good links with neighboring countries means that it serves as the perfect launching pad for a European journey. You can take a train from Luxembourg to Paris in a little over two hours and there are also many other handy connections available, including:

The ticket class options and the amenities provided will largely depend on the train company that you choose, as routes out of Luxembourg are handled by a number of different companies, as noted above. Book tickets for all of these companies and more using Omio.

Night trains in Luxembourg

Night trains are a common feature across the European rail network. Also known as sleeper trains, they are long-distance trains that include sleeping compartments. The idea is that you go to bed in one destination and awake in another. Unfortunately, there are few options when it comes to night trains in Luxembourg.

In 2021, the transport minister for Luxembourg was quoted as saying that night trains were not an attractive proposition for travelers in Luxembourg and that the national rail provider had not been approached to offer any such services. There have been night trains here in the past, including a route run by SNCF, but that was stopped in 2016. It seems that the demand just isn’t there. However, that might change in the future, at which point you will almost certainly be able to book night train tickets from Luxembourg right here on Omio.

The train network in Luxembourg and major connections

The domestic train system in Luxembourg operates what is known as a Horaire Cadencé, which literally means “Hourly Schedule”. It means there will be trains to every station every hour, and this is true from 8 in the morning until 8 at night. So, if you miss your train, you will have a maximum wait of 1 hour before another one comes along. And as you don’t need to worry about buying train tickets, you can simply wait at the stop/station and then hop on when it eventually arrives.

Of course, the same isn’t true for trains leaving Luxembourg or trains entering the country from elsewhere. They operate their own schedule and you can find more details about these train routes when you book your cheap train tickets through Omio.

Popular train journeys in Luxembourg

The most popular train journeys leaving and entering Luxembourg are the ones taking passengers to France, Germany, and Belgium. Not only are these run by efficient national railways, but they operate on established routes and have a close relationship with the national rail provider of Luxembourg. These routes are used by both business and leisure travelers, as Luxembourg is a key destination for the European Union and has a huge banking sector.

FAQs

Has public transport always been free in Luxembourg?

This initiative was launched in March 2020, with the government keen to take action against the growing traffic problems on Luxembourgian roads. It remains to be seen whether it will last or not.

Are all trains free in Luxembourg?

If the trains are provided by CFL and they don’t leave the country, they should be free. It’s worth noting, however, that there is still a paid first-class option on these trains and that is provided via subscription. It offers a little more convenience to travelers and it is also reasonably priced.

Does Luxembourg have night trains?

There are very few—if any—night train routes in or out of Luxembourg. That might change in the future as the government is investing a lot of money in the train system, but as things stand, your options are limited in this department.

Is the Luxembourg train system good?

Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it has been neglected or isn’t efficient. In fact, Luxembourg has spent more per capita on its railway network than any other European nation. Sure, it has a very small population, but it’s also a tiny country, so that’s still an impressive feat. It adds up to a lot of money and makes for a very nice public transportation system.

Is Luxembourg worth visiting?

Very much so. It is a beautiful country that has a surprising amount to offer, including some gorgeous buildings. Despite its size, it will keep you busy, and if you’re looking for a short trip you can take a train into Luxembourg and spend the day there.

Is Luxembourg safe?

Yes, it is a very safe country with a low crime rate. This is also true for Luxembourg trains, which are safe. However, it’s still important that you keep your wits about you and make sure your valuables are protected at all times. It doesn’t matter how safe a country is, there is always a risk, especially to tourists.

Does Luxembourg have high-speed trains?

Yes, some of the routes that connect to Luxembourg from other countries use high-speed trains. Such is the case with SNCF trains from Paris, as they use TGV Duplex trains. It means that you could be in Paris in just over a couple of hours, perfect to catch Paris in bloom during the spring, see the leaves fall in autumn, or soak up the sunshine in the summer.

Main train stations in Luxembourg

There are just four main train stations in Luxembourg. The biggest of these is simply named the Luxembourg Railway Station. It is a hub for all domestic trains in the country and also runs a number of international routes. The station processes over 80,000 passengers a day and is a very modern and fairly large station. It is just 2 km (1.2 mi) from the center of Luxembourg City, so if you arrive at this station for a stay within the city, you can probably walk to your destination. You will find luggage lockers, toilets, and ATMs in the station, along with a Belgian-style restaurant located in the main hall.

Cents-Hamm railway station is also located in Luxembourg City but is much smaller. Colmar-Berg railway station is situated in the center of the country and sits on Line 10. Lintgen railway station in Lintgen (a town of fewer than 3,000 residents) is also on Line 10.

More information about trains in Europe

Luxembourg is a prime example of what makes the railway networks of Europe so popular. It operates a busy, well-maintained, and extremely well-ordered network that takes passengers across the length and breadth of the country and also into all neighboring regions. If that’s not enough for you, you can venture further afield and explore more of this vast and diverse continent.

In addition to some of the rail companies outlined in this article, Europe is also home to companies such as Italo, NS, ÖBB, PKP Intercity, Renfe, and Trenitalia. Their connections span some of the longest train routes in Europe and encompass the fastest and most comfortable trains. Trains are also an eco-friendly way to travel, which is why governments are investing so much into their rail systems and encouraging residents and tourists to travel. We might not see another country follow in the footsteps of Luxembourg and provide rail access for free, but big train companies are already doing their part by keeping trains efficient and costs low. If you book your European train tickets through Omio you will get even lower prices, allowing you to explore everything this continent has to offer without blowing your budget.

Popular destinations in Luxembourg

Luxembourg may not be at the top of many peoples’ bucket lists. It is usually overshadowed by its bigger neighbors. But it is a beautiful country in its own right—if anything, its small size adds to its appeal. It also means that you can stop by for a day trip or drop in for a week and use the free public transportation to see most of the country’s best attractions.

Take a stroll toward the Grand Ducal Palace to see a snapshot of history, as Luxembourg is the only remaining Grand Duchy in the world. Check out the jaw-dropping Vianden Castle, take a guided walking tour through the city, or head for the Mullerthal Trail and you’ll see that there’s more to Luxembourg than medieval buildings. If you like impressive cathedrals, pay a visit to Cathédrale Notre-Dame, which is just as stunning as its Parisian namesake.
