NS Train Types
NS's fleet of trains include:
- Double Intercity: Two tier trains that are the most common across the Netherlands. Used for cross country routes.
- Single Intercity: Also used for throughout the country, these are easier to get on and more space for luggage.
- Intercity Direct: These are faster trains and used mainly on the Amsterdam - Schiphol airport route.
- Sprinter Train: These are regional trains that stop at mainy stations, they often don't have toilets or free Wifi.

NS trains from Amsterdam
Many NS trains depart from the capital Amsterdam's main station, Amsterdam Centraal. NS ticket types
- One-way ticket: Ticket can be used in one direction, multiple stops can be made on the way, this ticket must be used between the hours of 00:00 - 04:00 the following day.
- Day Return: Going to a destination and returning in one-day .multiple stops can be made on the way, this ticket must be used between the hours of 00:00 - 04:00 the following day.
- Group tickets: If traveling in a group of 3, the passengers can traveling for a little as 8 euros each. For every extra person over 4 they only pay 1.50e.
- Day ticket: Can travel on multiple trains throughout the days.

Traveling with assistance on NS
There is a free NS service, NS Travel Assitance, that will help you through the station, board and exit the train. To organize this you need to get a free Mijn NS account, which you can do on the NS website.
Can you travel with pets on NS trains?
Small pets kept in a cage (no more than 30x30x55) can travel for free. If your dog is too big then it will need a ticket as well to be kept on a leash as well as wearing a muzzle.
Guide dogs can travel for free but a guide rate ticket is needed.
What facilities can you expect on a NS train?
- Trains have Wifi
- Service is provided to assist disabled passengers and ease of access to trains and station facilities.
- On most NS trains there are power sockets and air conditioning.
- Please note:Sprinter Trains currently do not have toilets onboard other train types such as the Intercity do.
What are the baggage restrictions with NS?
- Luggage is free of charge but asked to be kept as to as much as you can carry.
- Bikes are only allowed on trains during off-peak hours and the owner must have a Fietskaart Dal ticket.
Can children travel for free on NS trains?
- Children up to 3 can travel for free if they share a seat.
- Children between 4 - 11 can travel for € 2,50 with a Railrunner ticket.
- Children can travel 1st class if accompanied by an adult age 18 or over. An adult can take 3 children with them,as long as they're carrying a Railrunner.
