Popular Airlines / Companies for Belgian Flights

Brussels Airlines is the only scheduled international airline operating in Belgium, though there is also a subsidiary of TUI Fly, known as TUF Fly Belgium, and a company called Vizion Air, which provides chartered flights.

Brussels Airlines is the flag carrier of Belgium and it’s based at Brussels Airport. It flies to more than 90 destinations around the world, many of which we discussed above and you can book using Omio.

Brussels Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group and it is also part of Star Alliance, a global alliance of airlines that includes over 2 dozen airlines and provides a variety of amenities to frequent flyers via its rewards program.

There are also a number of international airlines that connect through the country:

Main Airports in Belgium

There are 5 international airports in Belgium, but it’s likely that you’ll only encounter two of them on your travels.

Brussels-Airport, formerly known as Brussels-Zaventem, is the busiest airport in Brussels. It sits on over 3,000 acres of land and handles around 20 million passengers a year.

It’s well connected via road and rail. For the former, you can reach the airport via the A201, which connects to the country’s highways. Cars can also be rented at the airport if Brussels is your destination.

Rail is arguably the quicker and easier way, though, and it’s also cheaper. There is an airport railway station underneath the airport and it has direct connections to Brussels, as well as other major towns and cities in Belgium. There are coffee shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, and countless shops at the airport. You’ll also find lounges, ATMs, and foreign exchanges, ensuring all of your needs are met while you wait for your flight.

Brussels-Charleroi, also known as Brussels South Charleroi Airport, is the second busiest airport in Belgium and is located a short distance from Charleroi, which is about an hour’s drive away from the city of Brussels. Charleroi also has a train station and you can take a bus there from the airport.

It is a focus airport for Ryanair and handles a lot of flights to destinations in Romania, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and Denmark. By using this airport and not the main Brussels Airport, Ryanair keeps costs down on these routes, meaning it’s easier to find cheap flights to Belgium using this provider. There are busy roads and bus services connecting to the airport. There are also shops and places to grab refreshments, but as it’s a significantly smaller airport than Brussels Airport, your options are much more limited.

Ostend–Bruges International Airport or simply “Ostend Airport” is mainly a freight airport, although it is becoming an increasingly common sight on passenger and charter routes. Liege is also a freight airport and as of 2023, only TUI Fly offers passenger flights from here.

Finally, Antwerp Airport is just outside of Antwerp and serves just a couple of hundred thousand passengers a year. TUI Fly is the main provider here but Luxair also connects to the airport

Before your Belgian Flight—Preparation for Departure

You can access all airports in Belgium via taxis, buses, and trains. The country’s public transportation network is very well connected. The route you take will depend on the airport that you’re heading for or leaving, but if it’s Brussels Airport, you will find a railway station underneath the building.

Try to arrive at the airport a couple of hours before your flight is due to depart. It will give you time to check-in and go through security, which can be very busy during peak travel times. If you find that you’re able to breeze through check in and security and have a lot of time to kill, don’t worry, as Brussels Airport is vast and you’ll find lots of shops, eateries, cafes, and bars—more than enough to keep you busy.

Take electronics—laptops, phones, tablets—out of your hand luggage before going through security and place them in the bins provided. If you have any medications, keep them in your hand luggage and make sure you have a prescription on you. You don’t need to take these out and they will likely go through without issue, but on the off chance that you’re stopped and the security staff investigate, it’s important to have those prescriptions.

For medical equipment, including syringes, you should take a doctor’s note.

If you want to go through security with as little hassle as possible, follow the rules and the signposts, avoid wearing anything metal, and make sure there are no large liquid containers, blades, explosives, or aerosols in your bag. Remember, the liquid rules don’t apply to duty-free. You purchase duty-free items when you pass through security and must show a boarding pass. Those items are then sealed in a way that proves they came from those specific shops.

If you are unsure about buying any specific duty-free items or need assistance with anything else, you can ask the shop assistants or visit one of the information desks at the airport.

After your Belgian flight—after landing

If you don’t have any Euros, you might want to change some before you leave the airport. Belgium is part of the EU and uses Euros. You should be able to find currency exchanges in the airport but may be offered a better price elsewhere. You can, of course, just use your credit card and debit card. These are widely accepted in Belgium. It always helps to have a few notes and coins on you just in case, though.

There will be taxis outside of the airport but you can hop on a bus or train instead. If you have booked accommodation in the city, check to see if they have a shuttle bus from the airport. This service will pick you up and take you to your accommodation. It is often provided free of charge to guests.

In addition to cheap flights to Belgium and cheap flights out of Belgium, you can also use Omio to compare and buy bus tickets and train tickets, so keep the app handy when you travel.

Flight Travel Tips for Belgium

  • Take some Euros with you.
  • Many Belgians speak English, but it doesn’t hurt to use a few words in the local languages. There are actually three of these: Dutch, German, and French. These are spoken across different regions in the country.
  • Tipping is not mandatory, but it’s good to round up if you have good service. It’s not expected for taxi drivers and is mostly limited to restaurants.
  • Buses and trains are the best ways to get around the country once you arrive.
  • You can drink the tap water in Belgium.

The last tip we can give you is to always book your plane tickets with Omio! By comparing all of the most popular routes and airlines, we can help you to get cheap flights to Belgium every time.

FAQs

What is the main airline in Belgium?

Brussels Airlines is the Belgian flag carrier and the airline that offers most of the routes into and out of Belgium. However, there are also many international airlines that connect to Belgium, including major airlines like British Airways and large budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet.

Is Belgium an expensive country to visit?

It is far from one of the most expensive countries to visit in Europe, but it can be expensive if you stick to the areas frequented by tourists. For instance, you’re more likely to pay top dollar if you stay in the heart of the old town in Bruges than if you were to venture off the beaten path. Shop around, see what accommodation is available, and if you want to save on food, consider buying from local eateries and takeaways or buying from supermarkets, as opposed to eating in restaurants popular with tourists.

Is Belgium a safe country?

Yes, Belgium is a very safe country. However, you should protect your valuables whenever you’re using public transportation and keep your wits about you when you’re out and about. Although it’s safe, tourists are still targeted by pickpockets and scammers. It’s no different from other major European countries in that sense.

What is the best month to visit Belgium?

For many tourists, summer is the best time to visit, with July and August providing the best weather and attractions. However, these periods can be very busy, and if you’re looking for something a little cheaper and less crowded you may be better off visiting during the beginning of spring or the middle of fall/autumn. It’s not too cold (and there is an occasional heatwave) and there will be far fewer crowds to deal with.

How many days are enough to visit Belgium?

It depends on where you’re going. If you want to see all that the country has to offer, you’ll need a few weeks and you should prepare to take trains and buses from location to location. If you want to see the old town of Bruges, a few days is usually sufficient, although you can book as much time as you want and spend most of it walking the streets, relaxing, and stocking up on chocolate. For Brussels, a week is enough time to see all the highest-reviewed attractions.

What food is Belgium known for?

You probably know that Belgium is the home of the Belgian waffle and that it’s also a great country for chocolate lovers. But you might not know that Belgium is also where French fries were invented (odd choice of name, we know). There are some great cheeses here as well, not to mention some delicious desserts and fantastic beers. It’s a culinary feast!

What is the cheapest month to visit Belgium?

February is usually a very cheap month to visit Belgium. There isn’t much happening in terms of holidays (although it can be a fantastic budget escape for Valentine’s Day) and the weather isn’t great either. If you’re used to warm climates, you may struggle, but there are certainly many colder countries in Europe than Belgium. For a mix of decent weather and low prices, consider booking at the start of spring or the tail end of summer.
