Main Airports in Greece

Athens Airport is by far the biggest airport in Greece, as discussed previously. It handles domestic and international connections and is one of the 20 busiest airports in Europe. Thessaloniki airport is the second-biggest and there are also many smaller airports serving the Greek islands, including ones in Kefalonia, Samos, Rhodes, Kos, Lesbos, Zakynthos, Corfu, and Heraklion.

Before your Greek flight—Preparation for Departure

To ensure you have time to get through airport security you should arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight. If you’re traveling via Athens airport, you can take a taxi or bus there. Many airports also have shuttle buses. Taxis usually charge a set fee and you can enquire about this amount before you get in.

Greece is in Europe, so European travel rules apply. There are a few other things worth noting :

  • All passengers must go through security
  • Liquids in hand luggage must be less than 100 ml and carried in clear packaging.
  • Liquids larger than 100ml can be placed in checked luggage. These rules don’t apply to duty-free purchases in the airport.
  • Greece has some strict rules on certain medications that are freely available elsewhere, including opioid medications. We recommend checking the rules on these in advance. You may need to take a prescription/doctor’s letter and take only what you need.

After your Greek flight—after landing

You won’t need to pass through security when you land, but you will likely be asked to show your passport. The lines for passport checks can be long. Automated systems are being used to speed things up, but there are still delays during busy periods.

If you need cash, you can exchange it using one of the currency exchange desks. Greece accepts Euros, and while many shops take credit and debit cards, there are some areas where cash is best, such as tipping and paying for taxi services.

Speaking of taxis, you can find a bank of these outside of the airport. If you’re landing in Athens, look for the yellow taxis. They charge between €40 and €60 for a trip to the city center, which is about 33 km (20.5 mi) away. Shuttle buses and public buses are also available.

Flight Travel Tips for Greece

  • Change some Euros in advance if you can, making sure you get a good rate. The airport rate might not be the best.
  • Prepare your phone to make sure it will work and you won’t be hit with roaming charges.
  • Take all of the medication you will need, including prescriptions.
  • Don’t assume that you can take medications/drugs just because they are legal in your country. Cannabis is illegal here and opioids are tightly controlled. Check the latest advice for travelers in your country before taking any potentially controlled medications.
  • Consider getting travel insurance to protect you against costly unforeseen circumstances.
  • Pack some sunscreen—it gets hot and you don’t want to get burned!

Now that you’re primed and ready to go, book your Greek flight tickets through Omio and start packing!

FAQs

How do I find cheap flights to Greece?

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for cheap Greek flights. Omio allows you to compare Greek plane tickets from scores of airlines, covering all major and minor routes. It means that you can find the cheapest options for your preferred routes in just a few clicks, before confirming and completing your purchase when ready.

What is the best time to fly to Greece?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Easter is a very popular time to visit the country and a great opportunity to experience some of its orthodox traditions. However, flights are usually more expensive during this time and as Greeks also visit family during Easter, the roads and rails are much busier. Summer is also busy, but it can get very hot, and if you’re not used to the heat, it may be unbearable. For a nice balance of heat, affordability, and experience, we recommend visiting at the tail end of summer or the beginning of spring. You’ll avoid the rush and chaos and could save yourself some money in the process.

What are the most popular airports for flying into Greece?

Athens is by far the most popular airport in the country. It’s the biggest, the busiest, and it’s also located in the capital, so that makes sense. You will find connections to many international locations from Athens and it also connects to other airports in Greece. Unsurprisingly, it’s where most tourists start their Hellenic adventure.

How do I get to the Greek islands?

The easiest way to visit the Greek islands is to fly there directly from your nearest airport. However, this might not always be possible. Flights to Greek island airports are nowhere near as common as flights to Athens Airport. They are more common during the tourist season, including the height of spring and summer, but you may still struggle to find availability if you live near a smaller airport. We recommend taking a closer look at Omio during your dates and seeing what’s available. If you can’t get there direct, don’t worry, as Athens connects to all other airports so you can connect through the capital. You can also get there by buses/trains and ferries if you prefer a different approach.

What are the cheapest places to visit in Greece?

It might surprise you to learn that Athens, the capital, is one of the cheapest places to visit in Greece. The islands are very popular with tourists, so local shops and restaurants make a lot of their money during the tourist season. The prices can be on the high side, especially in places like Mykonos. Even in mainland towns like Nafplio, a former capital that is popular with domestic tourists, you’ll find some eye-watering prices. Athens has its expensive areas, of course, but on the whole, it’s often much cheaper than the Greek islands.

Is the summer a good time to fly to Greece?

Summer in Greece is glorious for some and unbearable for others. The average temperature in summer surpasses 81 °F (27.2 °C), but it gets much hotter. In 2023, for instance, Greece had one of its hottest summers yet, with temperatures of 115.5 °F (46.4 °C) recorded in parts of the Peloponnese. Air conditioning is common, and there are lots of beaches where you can cool off, but being in a bustling city like Athens at the height of summer can feel like you’ve just stepped into a volcanic underworld and will soon bump into Hades himself.

How do I get from Athens airport to the city center?

Athens Airport is about 33km (20.5 mi) from the center of the city. There are taxis outside and they usually charge you between €40 and €60 for a ride into the city, although it will depend on the time of year, time of day, and your exact destination. If you have booked a hotel in the city, you could check whether they have a free shuttle bus available, as these are fairly common and will get you to the hotel free of charge. If not, there are buses available.

What are the cheapest months for Greek flights?

Spring and summer are expensive, as they are popular seasons for travelers. Christmas is also busy, so it’s not the best time either. You can usually get very cheap flights if you book in October/November though. There isn’t much happening around this period, but the weather is still mild and the food is not going anywhere, so you’ll still have a great time.

Do I need a visa to visit Greece?

It depends on where you’re visiting from. In most cases, you will not need a visa to visit Greece. It is in the EU and it is also part of the Schengen Agreement. This means that if you reside in an EU/Schengen country you can visit freely. If not, you may still be able to visit for up to 90 days (such is the case with visitors from the US and UK). There are some exceptions though, but things are set to get simpler in mid-2025 with the introduction of the ETIAS, a type of digital short-term visa that non-Schengen visitors can apply for online.

More Information about Flights in Europe

At the top of this guide, we noted that there were more than 30 million tourists visiting Greece every year. What we didn’t say is that the population of Greece is just over 10 million.

To put that into perspective, over the course of a year there are roughly 3 tourists for every 1 resident in Greece. It’s a staggering statistic, but it makes perfect sense when you consider that Greece is the birthplace of democracy and Western literature, as well as the home of glorious summers, breathtaking springs, and some of the most picturesque islands in the world.
