Popular Airlines / Companies for Hungarian Flights

There are two main airlines in Hungary: Wizz Air and Smartwings. Wizz Air is a budget airline that you will see a lot of when looking for cheap flights in Hungary and many other European countries. It is not a flag carrier, but it is the largest airline in Hungary and it is headquartered in Budapest.

Wizz Air serves over 50 countries with a fleet of more than 180 planes. It commenced operations back in 2004 and is currently one of the biggest budget airlines in the world.

We mentioned above that Wizz Air doesn’t offer business class and tries to fill its planes as much as possible to cut emissions. But these aren’t the only methods that the airline employs. It also doesn’t offer any connecting flights, as a significant percentage of fuel loss occurs during take-off and landing, and by reducing the need for both, it can save more fuel. Modern planes are also used to ensure maximum fuel efficiency—Wizz Air has one of the youngest fleets in the world.

It's an airline that has taken great strides toward reducing its carbon footprint and making flying a more fuel-efficient way of traveling.

As for Smartwings, it’s a much smaller provider that operates chartered flights from Budapest. Its seasonal routes include Greek islands like Rhodes, as well as locations in Spain and Bulgaria.

There are also a number of international airlines that connect to Hungary and provide routes in and out of the country throughout the year. These include British Airways, Air France, Iberia, Brussels, SWISS, Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, Aer Lingus, KLM, Air China, Qatar Airways, Pegasus Airlines, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines.

Main Airports in Hungary

There are two major international airports in Hungary: Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and Debrecen International Airport serving Budapest and Debrecen respectively.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is by far the biggest. It’s located 16 km (9.9 mi) from the center of Budapest and is a hub for Wizz Air, Ryanair, and Smartwings. It has two runways and spans over 3,700 acres, Most of its connections are in Europe, but there are also a handful to Asia and the Middle East.

Budapest International Airport is connected via several public transport links. The local bus service runs two routes to the airport (100E and 200E) and there are also long-distance routes connecting from neighboring countries such as the Czech Republic. The Ferihegy railway station is also nearby and directly accessible via 200E from Terminal 2. Arrivals can also use this train service to travel to the center of Budapest.

The airport provides a wide range of amenities, including shops, eateries, bars, cafes, ATMs, foreign currency exchange, and much more.

It used to be called Budapest Ferihegy International Airport or “Ferihegy” for short. This name is still used to reference the airport, as Ferihegy refers to the neighborhood around the airport.

Debrecen International Airport is much smaller and handles far fewer flights. Basic amenities are provided in the airport and there are bus services and a taxi rank that can connect you to your destination.

Before your flight to Hungary—Preparation for Departure

Hungary uses the Forint, not the Euro, so change some cash into the local currency before you leave. Whether you’re flying to or from Hungary, you’ll need to follow standard rules for international air travel, including removing bladed objects and aerosols from your hand luggage. The rules regarding liquids may change, so check the signposts at the airport and make sure you follow them. You will also need to take electronics out of your hand luggage and place them in the trays provided.

If you have any medication, place them in your hand luggage and make sure you have a prescription. It’s rare that you will be stopped with a small quantity of medications, but if you have a lot of them or you are subject to a random check, you may be asked to prove that they were prescribed them. If you have any medical equipment (including syringes), ask your doctor to write you a note stating that the equipment is necessary.

After your flight to Hungary—after landing

If you land in Hungary without any Forints, you can change some at your arrival airport. You may not get the best rate though, so if you’re changing a large amount, it’s best to plan ahead and compare different rates.

If you haven’t made plans to get to your destination, there are a few options. Both airports are well connected. In Budapest, you can head to the train station at Ferihegy or use one of two bus routes. You can also find a bank of taxis outside the airport. These taxis are provided by Főtaxi, which is the official taxi partner for the airport.

In Debrecen, there are a couple of bus services (Airport1 and Airport2), as well as taxis. The rail options are limited, but the taxis charge a fixed tariff and there are plenty of buses, so you still have a couple of good options.

If you need bus tickets, train tickets, or more plane tickets for flights into Hungary and flights out of Hungary, book with Omio.

  • Hungary is a Schengen country. You shouldn’t need a visa to visit (although there are exceptions) but may need to apply for an ETIAS after 2025.
  • Although haggling is common in some countries near Hungary, it’s not very common here. People usually pay the sticker price on common items sold in shops.
  • Hungary’s power sockets use two pins and a 230V power supply. If you’re coming from a 3-pin country like the UK, you will need a converter.
  • Although debit cards and credit cards are widely accepted, cash is still king for many merchants and it’s good to have some with you at all times.
  • Some people in Hungary consider it rude to “clink” glasses, which is a common custom elsewhere. It’s not as much of a faux pas as the internet would have you believe, but it’s best to err on the side of caution and just raise your glass/bottle instead.

FAQs

Do I need a visa to visit Hungary?

At the time of writing, most people can visit Hungary without a visa, provided they stay in the country for less than 90 days. That will change with the introduction of ETIAS, which is slated for mid-2025 (it has been knocked back a couple of times), but it’s something that you can apply for online in a few seconds. Travelers from some countries (including Turkey and many African nations) usually need a visa, and this won’t change after ETIAS. Travelers who live in the Schengen Area have the greatest freedoms of all.

What are the cheapest months to visit Hungary?

January, February, November, and December are some of the cheapest months to visit Hungary, but it depends on when you book. For example, while December is usually a great time to visit, trying to book flights around Christmas and New Year could be tricky. You will likely pay a lot more during this time. In all cases, booking early will save you more money and lock those prices in.

What are the most expensive months to visit Hungary?

The summer is usually the most expensive time to visit Hungary. If you are on a budget, avoid June, July, and August. You could save some money on your Hungarian plane tickets by booking in late September or late May though, as the kids are still at school, families are not booking holidays, and prices are usually low.

Do they speak English in Hungary?

English is commonly spoken as a second or third language in the country. Not everyone speaks it, but it’s more common in the younger generations and you will also hear it a lot more in Budapest.

If you want to experience as much of Hungary as you can without venturing too far from your destination, Budapest is perfect.

Can you drink the tap water in Hungary?

Yes, the tap water is safe to drink. It is very clear. You can also find bottled water in grocery stores.
