Pisa to Rome by trainPisa to Rome by Train: Classic Tuscany From Your Seat

Regional, intercity, or high-speed? Direct or indirect? Traveling from Pisa to Rome by train, you have plenty of options. Here's how to plan the quintessential Tuscan train adventure.

An image of Pisa Centrale station

An image of Pisa Centrale station

Route overview

The distance between Pisa Centrale and Rome Termini is 165 miles (265 km). Direct high-speed and Regionale trains follow the Livorno–Civitavecchia coastal route. Indirect services via Florence (a combination of Regionale and high-speed) travel inland through Tuscany.

South of Florence, you’ll ride through a quintessential Tuscan landscape of rolling hills, cypresses, olive trees, sunflowers and wheat fields. Make sure you get a window seat!

Transportation experience

When I booked, the direct high-speed Frecciabianca seats were full price. However, the Trenitalia Florence-Rome high-speed route was on sale. When you add up the travel times of a direct Regionale and an indirect journey via Florence, there isn't a huge difference.

Buses are cheaper, but they take over 5 hours, arriving at Roma Tiburtina instead of Termini.

Departure station

Pisa Centrale station is a 25-minute walk from the Leaning Tower. Inside the station, eating options are limited. I was glad I had stopped for coffee and a pastry en route.

Despite the small ticketing hall, Pisa Centrale has 16 platforms. They are connected by a tunnel, and there are lifts if you have heavy luggage.

The station was busy in the morning. It took me a few minutes to find my platform. Arrive at least 20 minutes early.

Arrival station

After Pisa, Roma Termini felt more like a busy shopping mall than a station.

I did not linger, other than for a quick espresso in the coffee shop by the entrance. With views of the Roman walls, it was a perfect introduction to the wonders of the city!

With a metro station and many buses, just across from the roofed taxi rank, public transport is plentiful.

Schedule & frequency

The Pisa-Rome route is served by 18 direct high-speed Trenitalia Frecciabianca trains. The average journey is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Slower Regionale trains connect Pisa and Rome in 4 hours, departing every couple of hours.

Traveling with a connection? Both Trenitalia and Italo serve the high-speed route between Florence and Rome, with trains every 10 to 15 minutes. The trip takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Regionale from Pisa to Florence takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Onboard experience & services

In Pisa, I reached my platform through the underground tunnel, boarded the train, and found an empty seat. In Florence, I went through ticket barriers before reaching the platform. Be sure to keep your documents readily available, as they may check your passport or e-ticket again during the journey.

The Regionale trains only have Standard Class. They are a clean, efficient, no-frills option. The only downside is the Wi-Fi, which is often slow and patchy. Trenitalia’s Premium Class has leather seats, and the service includes a complimentary snack and drink. There is free Wi-Fi, and plenty of room for luggage.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Regionale trains have fixed prices, and my Pisa to Rome fare was €25. A great feature of Omio is that you can play around with different classes and flexibility levels. I realised that a Premier Class Frecciarossa from Florence to Rome was also €25. Sure, the Regionale from Pisa to Florence would cost another €11, but how could I say no to the idea of a stopover in Florence?

Top tips & recommendations

  • Give yourself plenty of time, arriving at Pisa station at least 20 minutes early.
  • Changing in Florence? Allow at least 30 minutes to not feel rushed.
  • If you’re traveling by Regionale, download music in advance due to the spotty internet.

Conclusion

Pisa to Rome is a train trip you will treasure for years to come. You can enjoy postcard-perfect images of Tuscany from the comfort of your seat. Remember to book your Pisa to Rome train tickets on Omio early to get the best deal on your fare.

Welcome to the Colosseum, an iconic symbol of ancient Rome that dates back to AD 70-80. This monumental amphitheater once hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, drawing crowds of up to 50,000 spectators who marveled at its architectural grandeur. What makes the Colosseum truly unique is its innovative design featuring a complex system of vaults and arches that has inspired countless structures throughout history.

As we step into St. Peter's Basilica, you'll find yourself in one of the holiest sites in Christianity and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture completed in 1626. The basilica stands as a testament to faith and artistry with Michelangelo’s breathtaking dome soaring above you while housing remarkable works like Bernini's Baldachin. Its significance extends beyond religion; it represents centuries of artistic achievement and remains a pilgrimage destination for millions around the world.

Finally, let’s explore the Pantheon—an architectural marvel built around AD 126 that boasts an impressive domed roof with an oculus allowing natural light to illuminate its stunning interior. Originally constructed as a temple dedicated to all gods, this structure exemplifies Roman engineering prowess through its harmonious proportions and enduring beauty over nearly two millennia. Unique among ancient buildings for being continuously used since antiquity, it now serves as both church and tomb—a living piece of history inviting reflection on time itself.
