As someone who loves slow travel through Italy, taking the Pisa to Florence train in Tuscany felt like the most enjoyable choice on my last trip. It’s one of those routes that’s not just practical - it actually adds something to the experience thanks to its immediacy and ease. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or squeezing in a day trip, this ride is as easy as it gets.

Route overview

You can travel from Pisa to Florence by train in around 50 minutes to 1 hour, covering about 85 kilometers (53 miles). I’ve done this route more than once, and every time it confirms the same thing: it’s the simplest and most efficient way to move between these two cities. Most trains depart from Pisa Centrale and arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, the train station right in the city center.

Transportation experience

I booked my Pisa to Florence train on Omio and, honestly, it took me less than five minutes. With so many departures (more than 50 per day!), I didn’t feel pressured to plan everything perfectly. If you’re wondering whether to drive, don’t: the train is just easier, and you actually get to enjoy the Tuscan landscape instead of focusing on the road. Not to mention the difficulty of finding parking in the center of Florence!

Departure station

Pisa Centrale is one of those stations that looks busy but is instead really manageable. I arrived a bit early, grabbed a quick espresso and cornetto for breakfast and checked the departure board. Everything was clearly displayed, a smooth start to the journey!

Arrival station

Arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella is always a moment I love. The white marble of the station and the shops inside with the old signs are exciting for a vintage lover like me. Also, you step out and within minutes you’re walking toward the Duomo. No long transfers, no confusion, just straight into Florence.

Schedule & frequency

Trains run every 15 to 30 minutes, which I found incredibly convenient. I took a mid-morning train and was in Florence before I even had time to realize it.

Onboard experience & services

The Trenitalia Regionale train itself is simple but comfortable. I found a window seat and spent most of the ride watching vineyards and small villages pass by. It’s not a long journey, but it’s definitely a scenic one.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

I paid around €10 for my ticket by booking a few days in advance. Prices are usually between €8 and €12 depending on the time of departure. It’s really a smooth process.
