Route overview

You can travel from Venice to Milan by train in about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, covering roughly 270 kilometers (168 miles). High-speed trains like Frecciarossa and Italo run directly from Venezia Santa Lucia to Milano Centrale and are the solution I absolutely recommend to you!

Transportation experience

Booking my Venice to Milan train on Omio was quick and intuitive as always. I chose a high-speed train (Italo) for convenience, and it was easily the best option compared to driving. Flights aren’t practical for this distance, making the train the clear winner of this route.

Departure station

Venezia Santa Lucia is one of the most unique stations in Italy, located right on the Grand Canal. It’s compact, easy to navigate, and surrounded by cafés, perfect for a quick espresso and to marvel at the charm of Venice until the last second before departure.

Arrival station

One of the busiest train stations in Italy, Milano Centrale is large but well organized, with clear signage and excellent transport connections across the city. You can easily move from there by bus, tram or taxi (the taxi parking is located right outside the station, at street level).

Schedule & frequency

Trains run frequently, with departures every 30-60 minutes. High-speed trains take just over 2 hours, making this a very efficient route. What’s not to love about it!

Onboard experience & services

My standard seat with the Italo train was comfortable, with Wi-Fi and power outlets available. For this trip I brought a snack from home, but you can buy drinks and snacks directly on the train (or in the bars in the station). The ride is smooth and fast, with glimpses of northern Italy’s plains and towns along the way before starting to spot the skyscrapers of Milan.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Tickets can start from €20-€40 when booked early. This route is very popular so buy your ticket in advance directly on Omio to find the best deals!
