There is a good train connection from Venice to Trieste. Trains between these two beautiful Italian cities run frequently, and tickets are highly affordable. The journey is comfortable and scenic as well. Train travel is one of the best ways to get around Italy, and this route is no exception. Let’s take a look at what the train journey from Venice to Trieste is like.

The train to Trieste ready to depart from Venice

The train to Trieste ready to depart from Venice

Route overview

Nearly all trains between Venice and Trieste are operated by Trenitalia, the national Italian railway company.

From Venezia Santa Lucia, the station in Venice’s historic old town, frequent regional trains whisk you to Trieste. If you start your journey in Mestre on the mainland, you can also catch a high-speed Frecciarossa or InterCity service. Which option is best depends on where in Venice you are staying.

From Venice Santa Lucia, the rail distance to Trieste is 153 kilometers (95 miles), and the journey takes just 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Transportation experience

I booked my train ticket from Venice to Trieste on Omio. The website makes it easy to compare options and select the best fare. I also like that the fare conditions are clearly displayed, so you know whether your ticket is refundable or changeable.

Departure station

On my trip from Venice to Trieste, I departed from Venezia Santa Lucia station. The station is located right on the banks of the Grand Canal and is easy to reach on foot or by vaporetto ferry. As an important station on the Italian railway network, Venice Santa Lucia has many shops and cafés if you want something to eat or drink before departure. Once you are ready, simply check the departure board to see which platform your train departs from and board.

Arrival station

The main railway station in Trieste is called Trieste Centrale, and like Venice Santa Lucia, it is a terminus station. It is centrally located within the city, and the main canal of Trieste and the heart of the city center are just a 10 to 15-minute walk away.

Schedule & frequency

From Venezia Santa Lucia to Trieste Centrale, a regional train departs every hour for most of the day. More connections are available from Venezia Mestre station, which could be a good option if your hotel is located there.

Onboard experience & services

The regional train service from Venice to Trieste is second class only. My train was a modern double-deck train, with seats in a 2+2 configuration. You can take any available seat, as there are no seat reservations.

These trains are standard services, so onboard facilities are limited. If your train happens to be a renovated one, power sockets may be available, but don’t expect any additional facilities apart from toilets. The journey from Venice to Trieste is quite pleasant. Upon departure from Santa Lucia station, you’ll see some beautiful views over the Venice Lagoon. On clear winter days, you can also see the Alps in the distance. During the final 20 minutes or so, you’ll be treated to beautiful sea views.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

For my Venice to Trieste train ticket, I paid €16.45. Italian regional train tickets have fixed prices and cannot sell out. However, tickets for InterCity and high-speed trains vary in price according to demand, much like airline tickets. If you plan to take one of these trains between Venice and Trieste, it’s generally cheaper to book well in advance.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Check which Venice station, Santa Lucia or Mestre, is closest to your hotel, and depart from there.
  • Sit on the right side of the train for the best views of the Venice Lagoon when leaving the city and the sea near Trieste.

Conclusion

The train is the best way to travel from Venice to Trieste. You depart from Venice Santa Lucia station, located right on the banks of the Grand Canal, and arrive in the heart of Trieste. Departures are frequent, and the views along the way are scenic. I highly recommend taking the train!
