Venice is truly one of my favorite cities on the planet. It’s one of those rare places that still completely blows me away every time I step out of the train station. As I mentioned in a previous article, taking the train is, hands-down, the best way to arrive in a city as touristic as Venice. No need to worry about parking or hours of traffic — just hop on a train, step off, and you’re ready to roam the city of canals.

Route overview

Route Overview The easiest way to get to Venice from Milan is by taking the Frecciarossa, Trenitalia’s high-speed train operator. You can also take Italo, a private operator offering a similar travel time. Both trains take around 2 hours and 30 minutes to link the two cities.

Transportation experience

Transportation Experience Since there are two operators, the best way to compare prices and book is through Omio, where you can view and reserve tickets for both. It’s a seamless digital booking experience — I simply selected my time and fare, paid, and instantly received my ticket by email and app.

Departure station

Milano Centrale is my favorite station in Italy because of its monumental beauty. Built during the Mussolini era, it shares architectural similarities with Washington Union Station, although Milano Centrale is way bigger. I’d even say it feels like more of a monument than a train station. Take a moment to admire the details, especially the ceiling — it’s truly breathtaking.

Arrival station

Venice Santa Lucia Station is another gem, but for different reasons. It’s incredibly practical — step out of the terminal, and you’re right in front of the Grand Canal. No cars, no taxis — just pedestrians, boats, and the immense beauty that only Venice can offer. Everything is a five-minute walk from there.

Schedule & frequency

Schedule & Frequency Frecciarossa trains run every hour—and even every 30 minutes during peak morning and evening hours. All trains take around 2.5 hours on average.

Onboard experience & services

Onboard Experience & Services Frecciarossa offers four travel classes: Standard – Comfortable and affordable, similar to Second Class. Premium – More spacious seating and includes a light snack and drink. Business – Even more spacious, with snacks and drinks included. Executive – The most luxurious with 1-1 seating, plus food and drinks. As for the luggage policy, Frecciarossa allows two medium bags and one carry-on per person, with no weight limit. The grand, arched interior of Milano Centrale train station, filled with light For this trip, I traveled in Premium and found it very comfortable! After enjoying a coffee and a light snack, I discovered a new wafer flavor (Stracciatella), a life-changing moment for a snack lover like me! A scenic view of Lake Garda with blue water and mountains, as seen from a train window. The scenery between Milan and Venice is lovely, but there are two moments you must catch: Lake Garda: Sit on the left-hand side of the train. Between Lonato and Peschiera del Garda, you’ll get glimpses of Lake Garda with its orange-tiled roofs, blue waters, and green mountains — absolutely magical. Frecciarossa train on platform at Venice St. Lucia train station Venetian Lagoon: Just before arriving at Santa Lucia, you’re crossing the lagoon over the Ponte della Libertà into Venice. It feels like you're flying over the water — such a cool moment!

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown Milan to Venice train ticket prices are generally reasonable. You can sometimes find last-minute tickets for €30. I booked a Premium seat, so I paid a bit more, but it was worth it. Item Cost Train tickets 55€ Total 55€

They even offered snacks and drinks in the on-board bistro. One downside was that the train was a little late. Nevertheless, I would use the ICE again as it is comfortable and fast.

To be honest, I was a bit torn. The train was comfortable and I didn't have to change trains, which saved me a lot of stress. Unfortunately, it was delayed and there was hardly any information about it. The noise level in the compartment was pleasant. The toilet was not in good condition and the service seemed stressed. The view on the way was nice and the price was okay, but overall I would have liked more reliability.

I travelled from Milan to Venice and honestly expected a bit more. The train was on time, but the comfort was rather mediocre, hard seats, little space. Wifi hardly worked at all. The toilets were available but quite dirty. The view was nice, especially the closer you got to Venice. The noise level was also a bit annoying, as many people were talking loudly. Compared to travelling by car, it was still less stressful and the staff were really nice.

The train journey was on time, which was very important to me because I had an appointment. Unfortunately, my seat was not clean - there were crumbs and stains on the upholstery, which bothered me. The staff were friendly, but nobody came round to clean the seat. Otherwise, the journey was quiet and pleasant, and the wifi worked quite well. Punctuality is a big plus for me, but the cleanliness really needs to improve to make the journey enjoyable all round.

The train journey in Italy was simply great. It was punctual, clean, comfortable and, above all, I didn't have to change trains. The price was super fair and much cheaper than travelling by car. Instead of being stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway, I was able to relax and enjoy the scenery and had time to read. It was definitely the better choice than driving. I would take the train again any time, it's fast, reliable and pleasant. I can highly recommend it!

The train journey from Milan to Venice was pleasant throughout. The train was modern, clean and very comfortable. Wifi worked reliably, the seats offered enough space and the view of northern Italy was beautiful. There was a small on-board bistro offering good snacks and coffee. The quiet atmosphere in the carriage was particularly pleasant. The journey was on time and much more relaxed than a car journey on the busy motorway.

I can't say anything negative about the journey. The train was very punctual and the staff were very friendly and helpful. What's more, the sanitary facilities and benches were very hygienic and clean. I recommend buying your ticket online. Overall, I give the train connection a full five stars. The wifi was constant and very fast. As a result, I can only give it my recommendation.
Advantages

IconSeats
The train journey from Milan to Venice was actually very good, but unfortunately had a few weaknesses. The train was on time and fast, which was nice, but the seats on the train, even though it was fast, were quite hard and uncomfortable. Otherwise, however, it was equipped with everything necessary and was clean. The ticket inspectors were always nice and polite. To summarise, not a bad experience and above all cheap if you book in good time.

I could only recognise advantages on this journey. I left and arrived on time. What I found particularly brilliant was that the sanitary facilities were really very clean and hygienic. All the passengers were very relaxed, so I was able to relax during the journey. As a result, I can give the train connection 5 stars and give it my warmest recommendation.

The train journey from Milan to Venice was average overall. The train was comfortable, but the interior left a lot to be desired. The seats were acceptable but not particularly comfortable and the cleanliness could have been better. There were no special amenities on board, which made the journey a bit monotonous. All in all, the train journey was acceptable, but there was definitely room for improvement

My journey from Milan to Venice was pretty good. The first thing to mention is the excellent price. In my opinion, it was good value, reasonably priced and well justified for the long distance. In addition, the staff were very friendly and helpful. I always felt that I was in good hands. The wifi was very efficient and stable. I was able to make calls and even work on my laptop. The train also arrived in Venice on time. However, only minimal attention was paid to hygiene. The toilets were not well maintained and were unhygienic. The seats were also not well maintained and were unfortunately not comfortable and cosy. The noise level on the train was not optimal and appropriate. But overall a good and recommendable journey!

The journey from Milan to Venice was quite pleasant and the journey time was very short. During the journey, I either enjoyed the view or watched videos using the train's wifi. The staff were also very friendly to me. I would definitely recommend the journey.
