There are over 55 trains a day, with usually at least three to four trains from Venice to Verona departing every hour. Two of those are regional trains, and at least one is a high-speed train. Onboard experience & services

I took a Frecciarossa high-speed train operated by Trenitalia to travel from Venice to Verona. These are among the best high-speed trains, not just in Italy, but in all of Europe.

For this short journey, I traveled in second class, which has seats in a 2+2 configuration. Each seat has a power socket, and the train is equipped with Wi-Fi. There is also a café-bar car where you can buy snacks and drinks, although you are free to bring your own food.

In terms of scenery, the train journey from Venice to Verona is mostly flat terrain. However, the first few minutes of the ride offer some great views. This is when the train crosses the causeway across the lagoon linking the old city of Venice with the mainland.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

For my high-speed train ticket from Venice to Verona, I paid €18. InterCity and high-speed train tickets in Italy vary in price according to demand, much like airline tickets. I booked my ticket just three weeks in advance. However, if you are traveling during the high season or around national holidays, you will want to book much earlier to secure the lowest fares. Contrary to high-speed trains, regional train tickets have a fixed price and can never sell out.

• If you take a high-speed or InterCity train, check the train number rather than the final destination listed on departure boards.
• If you choose a regional train, take the Regionale Veloce rather than the slower service that stops at nearly every station.
• Book high-speed tickets in advance to get lower fares, as prices increase closer to departure.
