Frecciarossa train at Venice Santa Lucia
Route overview
The vast majority of trains from Venice to Verona are operated by Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company. There are also some daily services run by the private operator Italo on this route.
From Venice, the rail distance to Verona is 120 kilometers (75 miles), with the fastest high-speed train taking just under one hour to complete the journey.
Transportation experience
I booked my train ticket to Verona on Omio. What I like about using this website is that you can compare fares and schedules from both Trenitalia and Italo. Booking online makes it easy to select a train that best fits your itinerary.
Departure station
Venice has two main railway stations: Venezia Santa Lucia and Venezia Mestre. As my hotel was in the old city, I departed from Santa Lucia. This iconic station is located right on the banks of the Grand Canal, and it’s just a short walk or Vaporetto ride to get there.
Arrival station
Verona Porta Nuova is the main railway station in Verona. It is a major rail junction, with trains departing to all corners of Italy, as well as north across the Alps to Austria and Germany.
Schedule & frequency
There are over 55 trains a day, with usually at least three to four trains from Venice to Verona departing every hour. Two of those are regional trains, and at least one is a high-speed train. Besides regional and high-speed trains, there are also InterCity services, which fall between them in terms of speed.
Onboard experience & services
I took a Frecciarossa high-speed train operated by Trenitalia to travel from Venice to Verona. These are among the best high-speed trains, not just in Italy, but in all of Europe.
For this short journey, I traveled in second class, which has seats in a 2+2 configuration. Each seat has a power socket, and the train is equipped with Wi-Fi. There is also a café-bar car where you can buy snacks and drinks, although you are free to bring your own food.
In terms of scenery, the train journey from Venice to Verona is mostly flat terrain. However, the first few minutes of the ride offer some great views. This is when the train crosses the causeway across the lagoon linking the old city of Venice with the mainland.
Ticketing advice & budget breakdown
For my high-speed train ticket from Venice to Verona, I paid €18. InterCity and high-speed train tickets in Italy vary in price according to demand, much like airline tickets. I booked my ticket just three weeks in advance. However, if you are traveling during the high season or around national holidays, you will want to book much earlier to secure the lowest fares. Contrary to high-speed trains, regional train tickets have a fixed price and can never sell out.
