I was born in Sorrento and lived there as a child, so the Sorrento-Pompei train route is one of the ones I know best. Whether you’re chasing history (Pompeii Archaeological Park is a must-see), culture, or just a smooth commute along Italy’s stunning southern coast, this journey is part of the experience. Here’s my firsthand take!

The view from Corso Italia in Sorrento.
The Campania Express train takes about 30-40 minutes to cover the 25 kilometers (15 miles) between Sorrento and Pompei Scavi. It’s the fastest, most convenient way to reach the archaeological site of Pompeii while enjoying coastal views along the way (you can also smell the sea and the lemons!). Trains run frequently (about 1 per hour), making it easy to plan a flexible day trip.
Booking was straightforward through Omio. Trains are frequent and reliable, perfect for both early risers and those starting their adventure after breakfast. Compared to buses or private tours, the train is more affordable and gives you that unmissable local travel vibe.
Sorrento station is compact and easy to navigate. In Sorrento you can easily move around on foot: grab a quick espresso or sfogliatella at one of the bars or pastry shops nearby and hop on board. Trains are comfortable and you can enjoy the scenic ride along the cliffs above the Gulf of Naples.
Pompei Scavi station drops you right at the entrance to the famous ruins. From here, it’s a short walk (uphill) to the archaeological site, giving you maximum time to explore without worrying about taxis or parking.
Trains run every hour. Early morning trains are ideal to beat crowds at Pompeii, while late afternoon trains let you return to Sorrento comfortably.
Seats are basic but functional. There’s space for luggage (although during peak periods it is better to travel light) and the big train windows offer views of the coastline, lemon groves, and Vesuvius in the distance. For a short ride, it’s scenic and perfectly practical.
Tickets are usually under €15-17 for a one-way ride. Purchase at the station or via Omio, and don’t forget to validate before boarding. Planning ahead can save a little stress during peak tourist season, which can be very intense in these places.
