Taking the train from Milan to Rome is one of the most straightforward and comfortable ways to travel between northern and central Italy. The Frecciarossa high-speed train gets you from city center to city center without the airport stress, and the ride is smooth, quiet, and quick.

The Milan to Rome route is part of Italy’s high-speed rail network operated by Trenitalia. The train covers about 570 kilometers (355 miles) in just three hours and ten minutes, depending on the service you pick. With multiple departures every hour throughout the day, it’s easy to choose a time that suits your schedule. Taking the train from Milan to Rome is often faster than flying, especially when you factor in security checks and transfers.
I booked my Milan to Rome train tickets through Omio, which made it easy to compare prices and times. Within a few clicks, I had my First Class seat confirmed and the mobile ticket saved to my phone. The train left right on time from Milano Centrale, one of Italy’s biggest stations.
Milano Centrale is a massive station but well-organized. Be sure to explore it, because it’s one of the most beautiful stations Europe has to offer. I arrived by metro 25 minutes early, just to be safe, and that gave me time to grab a coffee before boarding. You can catch the metro inside the station. Frecciarossa trains usually depart from the main platforms, and the signs in the station are very easy to follow. On the way to Rome, the train stops at a few major cities, like Bologna and Florence and, occasionally, Naples, depending on the service. Even with these stops, the journey feels quick. Frecciarossa has become one of my favorite train operators in Europe because it strikes a great balance between speed and comfort.
Roma Termini, the main station in Rome, is located right in the center of the city. Once you arrive, it’s easy to catch a bus or metro since they leave right outside the station.
I rode in First Class, which included a wide leather seat in a single row, a power outlet and a quiet, clean environment. Shortly after departure, a staff member came around with a complimentary snack box and a bottle of water. Inside the box was a cookie and a shortbread. Nothing fancy, but a nice touch for a short trip. There was free Wi-Fi onboard, which worked most of the time, except through a few tunnels. I had a table in front of me (so I could eat and use my laptop), and there was enough space to stretch my legs. The Frecciarossa also has a café car if you want something more than the included snack. Prices are reasonable, and they offer sandwiches, coffee, and cold drinks. On Frecciarossa trains between Milan and Rome, passengers can bring two free bags, up to 161 cm total (Standard/Premium) or 183 cm (Business/Executive), with no side exceeding 80 cm or 120 cm, respectively. I booked my First Class ticket about 10 days in advance for around €55. Prices can go higher last minute, so if your schedule is fixed, booking early helps. Second Class is usually €20–€30 cheaper and still very comfortable, so I’d say it’s better value for money.
