She is particularly fond of train travel as a way to discover new destinations across Europe.

I was in Milan for a concert, but I had an extra day before I had to go home. I chose to spend that time making a quick trip to Bergamo. It is not too far away, so it doesn't require too much planning. However, once you get there, it feels like a different world from Milan. The train ride between Milan and Bergamo is easy. It is very frequent, making it a good option if you find that you have an unexpected free day. I booked my ticket the night before using Omio to ensure that I could choose an option that would not cause me to rush in the morning. In fact, making a quick trip like that is probably the easiest way to see Bergamo. It is not too far away from Milan. It is less than an hour away by train, but it feels like a more relaxed environment.

Transportation experience

For this particular trip, my journey involved a couple of changes along the way. I left Milano Centrale at 17:20, and this marked the start of my journey on a regional train.

The first part of my journey took me through Monza. This was a short journey of about 11 minutes. After this stop, I continued my journey on another regional train towards Ponte San Pietro. Along the way, I passed through towns and industrial areas that characterized the Lombardy region.

The final part of my journey towards Bergamo began from Ponte San Pietro. I arrived at 19:03. It took me a total of 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Departure station

Milano Centrale is one of the largest railway stations in Italy, but it is rarely less than busy. However, it is not too difficult to find the platform that you need to get on because the departure boards are large and easy to read.

I arrived at the station about twenty minutes before I was due to depart, and I got myself an espresso before making my way to the platform. It is just something that I do.

Arrival station

Bergamo station is in the lower part of the city. From there, it is easy to go further into the city towards the historic upper city, known as Città Alta, by bus, taxi, or funicular.

If you simply step outside the station, you can feel the atmosphere is less frenetic than in Milan. It is like the pace of life slows down right away.

Schedule & frequency

Trains between Milan and Bergamo run very frequently. On an average day there are around 83 departures, spread across the morning, afternoon, and evening.

Because of this high frequency, planning a day trip is quite flexible and you rarely need to organize your entire schedule around train times.

Onboard experience & services

The regional trains used for this route are not too complicated, and they are quite comfortable for shorter distances. There is room above the seats for smaller bags, and for the bigger ones, there is room near the doors.

Power outlets are available on the train I used, and this can be useful if you are carrying a phone or a laptop with you. However, since the distances are not too long for most people, the overall atmosphere is quite relaxed, with people reading or looking out the windows.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Train tickets on this route are relatively inexpensive. The cheapest tickets can cost around €5, while the average price is about €6 when buying on the day of travel. Booking through platforms like Omio can make it easier to compare different departures and find the best option for your schedule.

Overall, the journey was very positive. The only aspect that was not perfectly fulfilled was punctuality. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful and explained the situation to me very politely. The train and the sanitary facilities were very clean and hygienic. There were no complications when booking the ticket via the website and I was able to book the journey without any fuss.

Finding the platform in Milan was easy, we were travelling on the 20:05 train at the beginning of April, unfortunately the train was late (10 minutes), so we missed the connection in Bergamo. The journey itself was good, the train was clean and everything went well with the seat reservation. When we arrived in Bologna, we found the division of the station into 2 halves very confusing, as it was poorly signposted. However, the train connection itself is very good, with few intermediate stops and a fast connection.
