Traveling from Milan to Bolzano by train feels like stepping into a completely different landscape. Within just a few hours, you leave behind the urban energy of Milan and arrive in a snowy Alpine setting. I took this route during the winter season and can easily say that it’s one of the most atmospheric train journeys in Northern Italy, especially when timed with fresh snow. Here’s everything you need to know before planning your trip.

Milan Stazione Centrale beauty

Milan Stazione Centrale beauty

Route overview

Connections between Milan and Bolzano are primarily operated by Trenitalia. The journey often combines a high-speed segment with a regional connection, usually via Verona. The route covers approximately 280 km and takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the itinerary. While part of the journey runs on high-speed tracks, the real highlight begins as you move north. You’ll see the landscape gradually shift into alpine scenery, which is especially striking during the winter months.

Transportation experience

Since most routes require a quick transfer in Verona, I booked my ticket in advance through Omio to secure a smooth connection. Departing from Milan, the journey begins with a fast and efficient high-speed segment. But the real magic happens after Verona, when the train starts moving deeper into the Alps. Snow-covered vineyards, frozen rivers and mountain backdrops slowly take over the view. If you’re traveling in winter, this is the kind of journey where you’ll want to stay glued to the window.

Departure station

Milano Centrale is one of Italy’s busiest and most impressive stations. It’s located slightly outside the city center, but well connected by metro and taxi. I arrived about 20 minutes early to navigate the platforms comfortably. There are plenty of cafés and shops, but as always, grabbing a coffee before entering the station can save you a bit.

Arrival station

Bolzano’s train station is centrally located and much calmer in comparison. As soon as you step outside, the atmosphere shifts. You’re surrounded by mountains, crisp air and, in winter, often snow. From here, it’s an easy walk to the old town, Christmas markets (seasonal) and most accommodations.

Schedule & frequency

There are several daily connections between Milan and Bolzano, though many involve one transfer. First departures are typically between 5:00 and 6:00 am, with the last departures running from late afternoon to early evening. Journey times usually range from 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and most routes include a change in Verona. It’s worth checking schedules in advance to find the most convenient connection.

Onboard experience & services

For this journey, I chose a second-class ticket, which was comfortable and more than adequate. The seating offered good legroom, and the large windows were ideal for enjoying the scenery. There was space for luggage, and the restrooms were kept clean. On the high-speed segment, there was access to onboard services like snacks and drinks. Considering the relatively short duration and the fact that most of the experience is about the views, second class felt like the smartest and most economical option.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

My Milan to Bolzano train ticket cost €45. The exact price you’ll pay depends on the connection and timing. Booking in advance helped secure a better fare, especially for the high-speed segment. Prices can vary, so it’s worth comparing options before booking.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Book early to get better prices and a window seat, since this route is all about the scenery, especially in winter.
  • Check your connection time in Verona to avoid rushing between trains.
  • Dress in layers, as temperatures in Bolzano can be significantly colder than in Milan.
  • Opt for second class for better value, as the comfort level is already high.
  • Look out for seasonal offers from Trenitalia, including weekend deals and Freccia promotions.

Conclusion

The Milan to Bolzano train journey is one of those routes that feels like a transition between two worlds. In just a few hours, you move from city life to alpine landscapes, making it an ideal winter escape and a memorable travel experience in Northern Italy.

The journey took 3 hours and I didn't have to change trains. The journey was very relaxed, although it was relatively full. I was able to find a seat. But it was still relatively quiet. I was able to work and there were power sockets. We were on time in Bolzano and the conductor was very nice. The train was also very well cleaned, as was the toilet. I also found the seats to be very comfortable. All in all, I am satisfied.

We travelled a good three hours by train and I felt comfortable the whole time. It was relatively quiet on the train and there were power sockets available. The train was also very well cleaned and the toilet was only a little dirty and hardly stank at all. I didn't have to change trains and travelled through on one train. The staff were nice to me and we arrived at our destination station in Bolzano on time.

The only downside here was that the train was unfortunately not quite on time. Nevertheless, it was nice to see that cleanliness was definitely a top priority for the staff. I was travelling on business and was therefore pleased that there was a good reception. I recommend the journey.

Disadvantages

To my disappointment, the staff were very unfriendly and very reluctant to help me. To be fair, I have to say that another passenger had previously shouted at and insulted them. The internet speed was only 10 megabits per second, which is below average. Cleanliness and punctuality were given. The journey took place on 15 October.

Unfortunately, my train was not quite on time on this journey. Apart from that, I only have positive things to say. My seat was very well cleaned and I had a very good network connection and stable reception for the entire journey. The sanitary facilities were very clean and hygienic. In conclusion, I can recommend the train connection and give my recommendation to buy a ticket. 4 stars.

Disadvantages
IconPoor hygiene
I want to start with an advantage. The train was very punctual. Unfortunately, when I got to my seat, I realised that it wasn't clean and there was leftover food and other rubbish everywhere. At least there was good wifi and stable reception. In my opinion, the staff were very professional and competent. The price of the ticket was reasonable and I recommend the journey.

Disadvantages
IconNot quite on time
I could clearly see that cleanliness was a top priority. The staff were always helpful and I had no other problems. My train was a little late, 14 minutes late to be precise. There were no shortcomings in terms of comfort. The journey took around 4 hours and I changed trains once. I had train number 3758.

In fact, I only had positive impressions and experiences while travelling. These included the fast wifi and constant reception, the hygiene and cleanliness of the toilets and seating area and the friendliness of the 4 members of staff. I was very happy that it was clean and hygienic so that I could relax and unwind.
