Spain’s high-speed rail network is the most extensive in Europe and makes journeys like getting from Málaga to Madrid by train a breeze. Not only is it a convenient trip of under three hours, but there are several train companies operating on this route, meaning lots of departure times and fares to choose from. This train journey is easily the best way to get from Málaga to Madrid. In this guide, I’ll share my tips for taking the Renfe AVE between Málaga and Madrid.

The Málaga to Madrid journey with Renfe AVE covers a distance of 416 kilometres (258 miles), whisking you from Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast to the heart of the country in an average journey time of 2h 44m.
The Málaga to Madrid journey is easy to book via Omio, and you can filter your search by cheapest tickets or fastest trains. If you use the Omio app, your tickets will be available offline, and you can also receive live trip updates. If you’ve ever wondered if it’s worth flying from Málaga to Madrid, my recommendation would be that train travel is both better value for money and more convenient on this route, especially as both train stations are located in or near the city’s downtown area. Compared to bus travel, which may take twice as long, this high-speed rail route is also a clear winner.
The Renfe AVE train departs from Málaga’s Maria Zambrano station and arrives at Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes station. Maria Zambrano station is a short 10-minute walk from Málaga’s historic center and is connected to the Vialia shopping mall, where you can pick up something to eat or supplies for your trip. Boarding the train at Maria Zambrano is straightforward, as all the platforms are on the same level.
Once you arrive at Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes station, you’ll find several options for onward travel, including the Madrid Metro and the Cercanías commuter rail service for connections across the Madrid region.
AVE trains depart from Málaga to Madrid from early in the morning until late at night, with a frequency of around 10 trains per day. My favourite departure time is around 6:55 am, so I can arrive in Madrid by 9.45 am and still have time for a full day of sightseeing.
Renfe AVE trains have an onboard restaurant, and you can also buy food and drink from the trolley service. Free Wi-Fi is available - make a note of your ticket number to be able to access this. Onboard entertainment is also available, and there are charging sockets for mobile phones and laptops located between the seats. I always enjoy watching the landscape change during the journey, from the rolling hills and whitewashed villages of Málaga province to the olive groves of Córdoba, and finally, the high-rise buildings of Madrid approaching in the distance.
To get the best fare, book at least three weeks in advance via Omio. AVE Renfe tickets from Málaga to Madrid are available from €21 one-way.
