I loved exploring Spain by rail: the route from Malaga to Seville was the perfect choice for a sunny getaway through Andalusia during our summer vacation. It allowed me to soak in the Mediterranean vibes from a comfortable seat where I could edit photos, plan my tapas tour, or simply gaze at the olive groves rolling by… and, best of all, I skipped the hassle of navigating narrow city streets in Seville! Whether you’re exploring the south of Spain for the first time (like I did!) or moving between these two iconic cities for a quick break, this journey is exceptionally smooth. Let me share my experience traveling from Malaga to Seville by train, along with some practical advice for your Andalusian adventure.

Route overview

The train journey from Malaga to Seville is remarkably fast, taking between 1 hour and 55 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes, covering about 200 kilometers (124 miles). In my view, it is the most stress-free way to connect these two hubs. Renfe’s high-speed Avant and AVE trains link Malaga María Zambrano and Sevilla Santa Justa stations frequently throughout the day. While Media Distancia trains are also available and can be slightly more economical, the Avant services offer the best balance of speed and value for this specific route.

Transportation experience

Booking my Malaga to Seville ticket via Omio made the entire organization effortless. I could easily compare the faster Renfe Avant trains with the regional options and pick a departure that fit my slow-morning schedule. If you’re debating between renting a car or taking the train, I’d say the train is the winner. It’s faster than driving, avoids the heat of the road, and deposits you right at the edge of Seville’s historic center. Also, flights aren’t a viable option for this distance, making the rail the true “king of this route”.

Departure station

Malaga María Zambrano is a modern station that sometimes feels more like a shopping mall. It’s well-connected to the city center and the airport via local C-1 trains. The station is packed with boutiques and cafés, perfect for grabbing a pitufo (a local small sandwich) before you go. One thing you have to remember: in Spain high-speed rail platforms require a quick security X-ray for your luggage. It’s very fast, but I still recommend arriving about 20-30 minutes early to breeze through the process and find your carriage without any rush.

Arrival station

You’ll arrive at Sevilla Santa Justa, the city’s primary railway gateway. It’s a large, impressive station located just a short bus or taxi ride from the Giralda and the Barrio Santa Cruz. Taxis are right outside the main exit, and the local bus network is very intuitive. If you prefer walking, you can reach the edge of the historic district in about 15-20 minutes, though with luggage, a quick cab ride (especially at night) is usually my preferred choice.

Schedule & frequency

Trains run almost every hour, which gave me great flexibility to enjoy one last breakfast by the sea in Malaga before heading to the beautiful Seville. Whether you’re a morning person or prefer traveling in the golden hour of the late afternoon, there’s always a connection that fits your needs.

Onboard experience & services

My experience on the Renfe Avant train was excellent: the seats were wide, the cabin was perfectly air-conditioned (a must in Andalusia!), and there was plenty of space for my bags. While these are shorter-distance high-speed trains, they still offer a level of comfort that far exceeds any bus or car journey. The ride is exceptionally smooth, ideal if you want to enjoy the landscape of white villages and sunflower fields that grazes this part of Spain.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

To secure the best rates, I always suggest booking your Malaga to Seville train at least a week or two in advance. While prices for Avant trains are relatively stable, they can fill up during holidays or weekends. Expect to pay between €20 and €45 depending on how early you book and the type of service you choose.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Arrive early for security: Don't forget the mandatory luggage scan for high-speed trains in Spain.
  • Pick the Avant trains: They are significantly faster than the Media Distancia for a very small price difference.
  • Keep your ticket handy: Have your Omio e-ticket ready on your phone to scan at the automated gates.
  • Seat selection: Try to get a window seat to enjoy the iconic Andalusian countryside.
  • Stay hydrated: Buy a bottle of water at María Zambrano station, as not all shorter-distance trains have a full bar service.

Conclusion

Choosing the train for your trip from Malaga to Seville is a decision you won't regret (I surely haven’t!)! It’s fast, reliable, and allows you to transition from the coast to the heart of “flamenco culture” in total relaxation. Book your journey on Omio, sit back, and get ready to be charmed by Seville. ¡Buen viaje!

I was pleasantly surprised by the train journey. It really was the best connection for my route, without changing trains and perfectly timed. The comfort in the carriage was just right: comfortable seats, plenty of legroom and a quiet atmosphere. I was able to make good use of the time because the wifi was stable and fast enough to work. I was also impressed by the punctuality, we even arrived a few minutes early. I think that's more than fair for the price we paid. I would book this connection again at any time. That's how travelling by train should always be.

The train journey with Renfe AVLO 02069 from Málaga to Seville was a complete success! The departure from the modern Málaga María Zambrano station was punctual and stress-free. On the train itself, I was impressed by the clean, friendly atmosphere and the comfortable seats, which are also pleasant for longer journeys. The large windows offer a great view of the varied Andalusian landscape - a real highlight. I found the price-performance ratio particularly positive: for a low fare, you get a fast, direct connection and save yourself the trouble of long transfers. The staff were helpful and friendly, the air conditioning worked reliably and the sanitary facilities were clean. Wifi and power sockets on site make the journey even more comfortable. You arrive in Seville relaxed and without any hassle - perfect for business travellers and holidaymakers alike. I would book this connection again at any time and can recommend it to anyone who wants to travel between Málaga and Seville in a comfortable, cheap and environmentally friendly way.

I really appreciated the fact that the train arrived on time. The journey was smooth and the schedule was well planned. Unfortunately, the carriage was not particularly clean. The floor was covered in crumbs and some areas appeared to be unkempt. This detracted a little from the overall impression. Nevertheless, the journey was pleasant as the seat was comfortable and the compartment remained quiet. I give 4 stars.

I quite enjoyed the journey. The train was modern and comfortable, but unfortunately the cleanliness didn't quite live up to expectations. Some of the seats were stained and the tables could have done with a wipe. The train journey was quiet and the train arrived on time. The service was friendly and offered assistance. All in all, the journey was pleasant, but I would like to see more attention paid to cleanliness.

The only downside of the train journey was that the wifi occasionally didn't work properly. Overall, the journey was still pleasant for me. The seats were comfortable and I had enough space to feel at ease. It was quiet in the compartment, which allowed me to relax. I read, listened to music and just looked outside. I particularly liked the fact that I could get up and move around in between.

It was honestly the cheapest ride of my life. It's unbelievable, it only cost 14.45€. I didn't expect anything for that price, but I got so much. The incredible thing is that there were no negatives either and the thing I liked the most was of course the price and the air conditioning, which worked perfectly and made sure I didn't get warm. There was also great wifi and clean toilets. The staff were also very nice and humorous. The service was also cool. I got much more than I expected, so I can only recommend the trip. My train was also on time.
Advantages
Iconvery favourable
This ride was honestly the cheapest ride of my life. It's awesome! I only paid €14.45 and got from city to city, which is too good to be true. Add to the great price: the comfy seat, the volume on the train(it was quiet), the disinfected toilets and the services. It was awesome. Even if everything was in the negative, although it was perfect, I can't recommend anything else but this trip. Besides, Spain is very beautiful and has many sights.
Advantages
IconPleasant atmosphere
This ride was in 2016 and was great. I went at noon and the ride took 2½ hours. Luckily there was air conditioning as it was very warm. My wifi was good and the train arrived on time. I will say in advance that I can recommend the trip. If you needed food, you also got it. The service was fast and price neutral. My meal was delicious, the toilets were clean and this was one of the cheapest tickets of my life, only 14,45€. That's awesome!
Advantages

The rides in Spain are really awesome! My journey from Barcelona to Girona was just as great. I had a window on the seat, the heaters were on and the atmosphere was great. I had multiple access to electricity and the service was very fast. The staff were very nice. The toilets were very clean and hygienic. My train was on time and very cheap. I can definitely recommend it as everything went as it said on my train ticket. Highly recommended.

This ride is a little older, but was great. I had access to wifi, which was great, and the staff were very friendly and willing to speak several languages. One of them also spoke German, which was really good. The services were very good as my food was delivered quickly and was delicious. The toilets were clean and hygienic. I am happy to recommend it as it was very cheap.
Advantages
Iconclean toilets, nice staff, hygiene
This train journey was in 2016. I travelled on a midday train in 2016. There was a cool atmosphere on the train. There was a lot of attention to hygiene, the staff were very friendly and nice. My wifi was great and I had multiple access to electricity. I can definitely recommend it, as it was particularly cheap. Finally, I would like to say that Seville in Spain is a cool city.
Advantages
IconTrain was on time, friendly staff
That was a great train ride in Spain. I was relatively young when I was on that train. I mean, it was 6 years ago, but I still have very positive memories because the staff were very nice, the atmosphere was great and the toilets were very clean. The Spanish people were very friendly, I can definitely recommend it. It was also very cheap.
Advantages
IconFriendliness of the staff, delicious food, clean toilets
This train trip was really great. My trip in Spain was great. The train arrived on time and they even waited two extra minutes for all the patients to get on. The wifi was great I had no internet problems at all. I sat at the very first table in first class. The staff were very friendly and smiled at me when I boarded. There was a lot of attention paid to hygiene and the toilets were very clean. My meal was ultra delicious. It also only cost me €15. I can definitely recommend it.
Advantages
IconSuperb food, top service, clean train and clean toilets.
Disadvantages
IconTrain was half an hour late
The first class trip to Spain from Malaga to Seville was great. The food was very, very good. The food was brought quickly and the wifi was great. I can recommend it because it's great value for money. The staff were also very nice to me.
Advantages
IconService
On holiday in Spain, I was looking forward to a trip. Then I discovered this train ticket and found out that it was one of the best decisions of my life to take this train. The train ride was great! I was in 2nd class and had wifi, I could also charge my phone as I had my own socket. It was quiet on the train. I ordered a soup for dinner, which tasted great. The staff were very nice. The toilet was very modern and I felt free when I used it. I can really recommend it because it was also cheap.great ride.
Advantages
IconVery easy booking
Disadvantages
IconDelay
What I really liked about this journey from Malaga to Seville was that I was able to buy the ticket online via the Deutsche Bahn app, even though I was travelling abroad. I also liked the fact that the ticket was quite cheap. However, what I didn't like about this journey was that the train had locked toilets, a slight delay which made me late for my destination and the poor wifi on the train.
Advantages
IconCleanliness
Disadvantages
IconNo negative properties
I can remember absolutely nothing negative here. The train both arrived on time and was on time. In addition, it was very clean, so I didn't notice anything left behind by previous passengers. The wifi was very fast and, above all, constant. To summarise in one sentence. I give the train connection five stars and give it my explicit recommendation.
Advantages
IconNice ride
Disadvantages
IconPricewise okay
I travelled to Sevilla Santa on the so-called Avant 08694. Unfortunately, I noticed right at the start of the journey that the train was very dirty. Both on the outside and inside the train. Unfortunately, I have often had the experience in Spain that the trains are very dirty and hardly comparable to those in other European countries. The service was also rather poor and unfortunately I was not very satisfied with the price.
Advantages
IconGood catering
IconFast wifi
Disadvantages
Icon20 minutes late
The time I travelled from Malaga to Seville took two hours and 40 minutes due to a delay. However, I stayed in a hotel with friends overnight and therefore didn't continue my journey until the next day. I left Malaga at 20:19 and arrived in Seville at 13:31. The journey on train number 13910 was extremely comfortable. There was very fast internet, power sockets and a variety of catering. The service was also excellent and the toilets were clean, as was the rest of the train. For the price it was well worth it.
Advantages
IconSimple booking
Disadvantages
IconExpensive
IconDirty
Unfortunately, what I didn't like about the journey from Malaga to Seville was that my ticket was quite expensive, despite the fact that it was very easy to book online. I also thought it was a shame that the toilets were very dirty. Nevertheless, the wifi was very good. I also liked the fact that I was able to reach my destination in a very short time. What I liked best was that I didn't have to change trains during the journey.
Advantages
IconCheap ticket
Disadvantages
IconOvercrowded
What I really liked about my journey was that I was able to book a ticket that was cheap and that I didn't have to change trains, which meant I reached my destination quickly. I also liked the good wifi. I was also impressed by the clean toilets. But the train was overcrowded.
Advantages
IconGood fishing
Disadvantages
IconLocked WCs
The train from Málaga to Seville departed on 10 March at 8 a.m. with the train number 2027. The journey took around 2 hours. It was possible to buy a seat reservation, which I did. There were power sockets, wifi and tables on the train, which made it possible for me to work on the train and do some wifi surfing. Unfortunately, the toilets were locked, but the whole train was clean and hygienic. The staff were nice and polite
Advantages
IconGreat booking
Disadvantages
IconDirty
Unfortunately, the train from Malaga to Seville was dirty and the wifi didn't work as it should. Nevertheless, I really liked the fact that I could easily book the ticket online. It was also great that the ticket was reasonably priced. I also really liked the fact that I found a ticket that didn't require me to change trains. My favourite thing was that the train arrived on time and wasn't delayed.
Advantages
IconGood wifi
Disadvantages
IconPoor air conditioning
At 4pm the train departed from Malaga on the AVE 2861 and after changing trains took the IRY 6148bis to Seville. The comfort offered on the train was wifi, which worked well, as well as power sockets and food that you could buy. The staff were nice and helped me. Recommendation goes out to anyone who likes travelling by train. The price was very fair for the good quality. There were no delays.
Advantages
IconRelaxed travelling
Disadvantages
IconLoud noises
The train from Málaga to Seville departed on time from Málaga to Seville at 17:00 on 15 April. The connection is possible without changing trains, which makes travelling by train very pleasant. The journey takes around 2 hours. Unfortunately, the toilets on the train were closed, but the rest of the train was clean. The staff were very nice and helped me with my ticket.
