Every time I go to Italy for work or a holiday, traveling by train is a must for me. It’s fast, reliable, and affordable. Venice to Rome by train is a scenic, recommended way to discover this wonderful country. You can zoom through on a high-speed train or take it easy on local trains and experience the real Italy. Route overview

To go from Venice to Rome, you have three options. Two are via high-speed trains, which link the cities in about four hours. The high-speed route goes via Florence. The two operators are the national railway Trenitalia, with its Frecciarossa service, and Italo, a private high-speed train operator – that’s the one I chose for today’s experience. If you’re not in a rush, you can also take a night train to link the two cities. To sum things up, there's plenty of choice!

Transportation experience

I booked my ticket via Omio since it shows all operators, including Trenitalia and Italo. I went with Italo, as it was the cheapest, and I scored a first-class seat for a small upgrade fee. With that, it was time to treat myself!

Departure station

Venice Santa Lucia station has to be one of my favorite stations in Italy. When you step out of the terminal, you’re literally right in front of the Grand Canal. No taxis or cars in sight – just pedestrians, boats, and the immense beauty that only Venice can offer. Everything is just a five-minute walk from here. Rome Termini Train Station is definitely different from Venice but still has its own charm. Despite being quite a contrast compared to the surrounding buildings, the station is conveniently located in the city center and well-connected to Rome’s transit system. My personal recommendation: always walk wherever you need to go – you get to see more!

Schedule & frequency

High-speed trains take, on average, four hours to connect the two cities. With Trenitalia, you’ll have a train departing every hour – plenty of choice! The same goes for Italo, which also runs hourly. Both operators offer four classes, from the very fancy business class to the comfortable economy class, which honestly isn’t bad. Two trains per hour between Venice and Rome? I’m in!

Onboard experience & services

I traveled in first class (Prima Business) during my four-hour ride through Italy and had a solo seat – perfect for relaxing. In this class, you get free snacks and coffee served via trolley service! I remember sipping my espresso as we went through Tuscany – truly memorable. And if you want more coffee, the train has a Lavazza coffee machine, and you can see it grinding beans and making coffee through a glass door – pretty cool! Don’t miss the view after Venice Santa Lucia Train Station. For a few minutes, the train runs on a bridge above the Venetian Lagoon. My personal tip: sit on the right-hand side when leaving Venice for the best view. On the left side, the road unfortunately blocks some of the view, but it’s still cool! After Florence, you’ll experience Italian high-speed rail at 300 km/h. Even at that speed, Tuscany feels surreal – I just want to stop the train and get lost in one of those tiny villages. Just four hours after leaving Venice and its canals, I arrived stress-free in the bustling city of Rome. It’s quite magical – but that’s what Italy’s high-speed trains offer!

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

The sooner, the better, especially for high-speed trains. But with so many departures, you have a good chance of getting a deal. I paid €67 for my four-hour Venice to Rome train journey with Italo, and the upgrade was only €17 via Omio – I couldn’t resist.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Enjoy a coffee at any café across the canal in front of Venice station – in just 5 minutes, you can go from sipping a coffee with a gondola in view to sitting on a high-speed train heading to Rome!
  • Choose a window seat on the right side for the best views of the Venice Lagoon.
  • Be sure to get a coffee from one of the machines on the train.

Train travel in Italy never disappoints, and I’m glad I did it once again. Venice-to-Rome is one of the classic train experiences you must do between these two iconic cities. And the transition from Veneto to Lazio via Tuscany? Just amazing. Italy in a nutshell.

The journey from Venice to Rome had some positive aspects. The train staff were extremely courteous and friendly, which made my journey enjoyable. The train adhered to the timetable for the most part, which contributed to a smooth travelling experience. The price of the train tickets was reasonable and offered good value for money. The wifi on the train was stable, allowing me to stay online during the journey and use my time productively. The comfort on board was also satisfactory, with comfortable seats and plenty of space. Nevertheless, there were a few negative points to note. The cleanliness of the trains left a lot to be desired, which affected my comfort. The ability to reserve seats in advance was limited, which made it difficult to plan the journey. Also, the journey required changing trains in some places, which made the journey a little more complicated. Overall, the train journey from Venice to Rome was worthwhile.

My journey from Venice to Rome was extremely enjoyable as the price was good. In addition, the staff were very friendly and always attended to the needs of their guests and solved any problems efficiently. There were also no transfers which made the journey easier. However, I did have a long journey of about seven hours, but because the journey was so relaxed, there was no problem travelling that long. But I personally found the booking options complicated and the toilets were not particularly well maintained and clean. Overall, though, it was a pretty good journey.

My journey from Venice to Rome was excellent. The price was very good, or rather very fair. The staff were extremely friendly and polite to their guests. Also, there was no need to change trains, which made the journey much easier as I did not have to change trains. However, the volume was not adequate and the train arrived in Rome on time. We arrived in Rome without delay after about 3 hours and 30 minutes. I am very happy with the journey because the seats were comfortable and the train was well cleaned. The conductor was fine and there were power sockets. I didn't have to change trains and the train was well cleaned. The toilet was also good to use, but unfortunately there was a queue in front of the toilet, which was very annoying. I didn't have to change trains and was able to travel through.

As a foreigner, it's completely normal that I don't know my way around Italy perfectly. Despite my lack of knowledge, the staff were very happy to help me, and instructed me on the correct track. The toilets had definitely been cleaned well. Unfortunately, the network connection wasn't quite as good, which again wasn't tragic as I sat back and relaxed on the journey.

The journey was relaxed for the entire three and a half hours. The only thing to criticise is that the toilet stank a little. However, the train was well cleaned and it didn't stink. There were power sockets and the seats were great. The conductor was friendly and we were on time.

Looking back, I can only remember positive aspects. The train was very punctual. It was also very clean everywhere and the toilets were very hygienic. In addition, the wifi didn't have any dropouts. I bought the ticket in advance for a reasonable price, which I highly recommend. The staff were able to help me with some discrepancies. In conclusion, I would recommend the trip.

We arrived at our destination station Rome Termini after a good 3.5 hours. Unfortunately, the toilet was very dirty and stank terribly. The conductor was friendly to me. The train was clean and it was pleasantly quiet on the train for the first 2 hours. I was able to work and charge my devices during this time. Unfortunately, the last 1.5 hours were not so relaxed and it was very noisy on the train. I didn't have to change trains.

The only downside I had to realise was that it was anything but clean. Nevertheless, I have to say that the train was very punctual and the staff went out of their way to make the journey very pleasant. The price of the ticket was definitely reasonable. There was also good wifi and constant reception. To summarise in one sentence. I give the journey four stars and recommend it to others.

The journey took about 4 hours. We arrived at our destination station on time and I found the journey very relaxed. It was quiet in my compartment and I was able to work well throughout the journey. I didn't have to change trains and the conductor was very nice to me.

The train was a little late. However, everyone waiting was informed immediately about the delay. It was very clean on the train and I had good reception. As a result, I was even able to hold a video conference. The staff were very helpful.

I rate the journey with 4 stars. Apart from a small delay of about 5 minutes, the whole journey went without a hitch. I had good reception, it was very clean and I had a small fold-out table on which I could place my laptop to work. I boarded the train in Venice at half past six and arrived in Rome 4 hours later at just after half past ten. A very nice train journey.

The train was 10 minutes late. I liked the fact that it wasn't dirty. The staff behaved very professionally. I think the journey was everything I imagined it would be. It was very nice that my seat was very well upholstered. My recommendation goes out.
