The Milan to Pisa train is perfect if you’re planning to swap big-city energy for a more relaxed Tuscan vibe. I recently took this route for visiting an Art Nouveau exhibition and it’s an easy, scenic way to reach one of Italy’s most iconic destinations (not only for the leaning tower, believe me!).

The iconic tourist pose and Pisa Leaning Tower.

The iconic tourist pose and Pisa Leaning Tower.

Route overview

You can travel from Milan to Pisa by train in about 3 to 4 hours, covering around 250 kilometers (155 miles). You will find that most routes depart from Milano Centrale and arrive at Pisa Centrale, with both direct and connecting options available.

Transportation experience

I booked my ticket on Omio and chose a train with one connection only for convenience. Compared to driving, the train is stress-free and lets you enjoy the changing landscapes without focusing on the road, not to mention it gets you straight to the city center.

Departure station

Milano Centrale offers everything you need before departure, from cafés to shops. It’s a busy station (it is huge and there are many floors, connected by stairs, escalators and elevators) but efficient, so arriving 20-30 minutes early will help you orient yourself and reach the platforms without problems.

Arrival station

Pisa Centrale is definitely smaller than Milan Central Station. Located close to the city center, it’s a short walk or bus ride to the famous Leaning Tower and other attractions, like the wonderful murals of Keith Haring.

Schedule & frequency

Trains from Milan to Pisa run throughout the day, with departures every 1-2 hours. Travel time varies depending on whether you choose a direct or connecting service, but in general you will not have any trouble finding a ticket that suits your needs.

Onboard experience & services

My journey on Trenitalia Regionale train was comfortable, with spacious seating and power outlets. As you head south, the scenery becomes more distinctly Tuscan, with rolling hills and countryside views (of course including the famous scenic Tuscan cypresses).

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Book as early as possible to find tickets from €20-€35. This is a route between two of Italy's most famous tourist cities, so the sooner you buy your ticket, the better off you'll be.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Check if your train is direct or requires a connection.
  • Always book early for better prices.
  • If possible, travel during daylight for scenic views of the Tuscan countryside.
  • Keep your ticket handy for checks, also in between connections.

Conclusion

The Milan to Pisa train is a simple, comfortable way to reach Tuscany from the north of Italy. Fast enough to be convenient and scenic enough to enjoy the journey, it’s a great addition to any Italy itinerary if you are missing this city!

I was able to book my ticket from Milan to Pisa very easily online, but it wasn't exactly cheap, in my opinion. What I liked best was that I didn't have to change trains during the journey and was able to reach my destination very quickly. The wifi worked perfectly throughout the journey and the toilets on the train were very well maintained and clean, as were the seats.

I experienced an incredible willingness to help from the staff on the journey. The train was very clean, so there was no rubbish, chewing gum or anything similar. I paid a fair price for the train journey. There was a good network so that I could lie back with a series.
Advantages

Disadvantages
IconExpensive
The only good thing about this product was that I was able to book my train ticket very easily online and didn't have any problems, nor did I have to change trains, which I liked. Nevertheless, I found it very bad that the train arrived late and I therefore reached my destination with a delay. The ticket was also very expensive, which I didn't like. The toilets were dirty and the wifi was not available.

IconHygiene
The hygiene on this journey was definitely poor. However, the advantages of the journey were that the train was very punctual and that the staff endeavoured to make the journey a pleasant one. I would like to point out that the price of the ticket was reasonable in my opinion. My advice is to buy the ticket online to avoid problems on the spot. I give my recommendation.

The price-performance ratio was particularly good on this trip. Everything was perfect for a very good price. From the precise punctuality to the cleanliness of the train and the very friendly staff, this journey was simply wonderful. The train even had power sockets and wifi on board, which you could use for free. For someone who wants to avoid the stressful traffic, the train is a great option

Disadvantages
IconLong journey
Despite the very long journey from Milan to Pisa, I really liked the fact that I was able to book my ticket very easily and found a train journey that didn't require me to change trains. I also liked the fact that the ticket was very reasonably priced. I also thought the very good wifi was great and outstanding, as it allowed me to watch films online. I also liked the toilets because they were very clean.

Disadvantages
Icon10 minutes late
The journey took just under 4 hours and I didn't have to change trains. The conductor was very friendly to me and spoke to me briefly in English. Unfortunately, we arrived at our destination station 10 minutes late. Apart from that, the journey was very good. The train was in good condition and there were power sockets available. You could use the toilet without any problems, but it was a bit smelly. Power sockets were available and I am happy with the seats.

The journey took about 4 hours. I stayed on the same train and didn't have to change trains. There were power sockets which worked perfectly and which I could use to charge my laptop. We arrived at our destination station, Pisa Centrale, on time. The conductor was friendly to me. The train was clean, the toilet wasn't perfect, but it was okay. I found the seats quite comfortable.
Advantages

Disadvantages
IconVery loud on the train
I travelled about 3 hours from Milan to Pisa without having to change trains. We arrived in Pisa on time. Unfortunately, despite the beautiful scenery, the train journey was rather less relaxing: It was very noisy on the train, which did get annoying over time. Apart from that, however, everything was fine. The train was well cleaned, the seats were comfortable and you could use the toilet without any problems. The conductor was also nice to me. Power sockets were available.
