Italo is a brand of high-speed trains from the Italian train company Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV) offering regular services to popular cities around Italy, such as Rome, Naples, Florence and Milan. Among its fleet of trains are the Italo AGV 575, the premier high-speed service reaching speeds up to 186 mph (300 km/h), and the Italo EVO, an eco-friendly train that can reach speeds up to 150 mph (250 km/h). You can choose from the following Italo ticket types when purchasing tickets between Florence and Trento: Low Cost, Economy, and Flex. Italo offers four different class options: Smart, Comfort, Prima and Club Executive. Trains from Florence to Trento vary in frequency throughout the year. At certain times of the year, there are over 20 trains on average that leave Florence and arrive in Trento each day. At other times, there is only one train operating that route. So, it depends on what time of year you plan on traveling between those locations. When the journey is more frequent daily, the travel time can be anywhere from 3h to 7h, with an average time of over 5.5h. During the less frequent times, there is a shorter travel time of just under 3h.
During the time of year when the trains are most frequent, anywhere from 27-30 trains leave Florence for Trento. The Florence to Trento trains start very early (or late depending on whether you decide to stay up or sleep early) with the first train leaving the station at about 2:03 a.m. This is not a bad time to leave as you arrive in Trento in the morning at around 8:52 a.m. with a full day ahead of you. The last train to leave Florence is at around 7:55 p.m. and arrives in Trento just before midnight. There are two common routes where the transfer stations differ. One route is by way of Bologna, then either on to Trento or another transfer in Verona Porta Nuova. Departure train station: When leaving Florence for Trento by train, there are two stations you can depart from; Santa Maria Novella and Firenze Rifredi Stations. Santa Maria Novella Station is the main station for Florence with 19 platforms and hundreds of thousands of people traveling through it daily. Plus, it’s right in the heart of the city so it is easy to walk around the city center from just outside the station. Some of the facilities offered are cafes and restaurants, pharmacy, ticketing counters, disabled traveler services, and banking. Firenze Rifredi station is the smaller of the two with only 5 platforms and located north of the city so getting to the city center would require a taxi, bus, or transfer to Santa Maria Novella.
Arrival train station: Just like in Florence, arriving in Trento you can either arrive at Trento main station or Trento S. Chiara. Trento, being the main hub, is just north of the city center so you can easily walk into the city in a few minutes. Trento also offers the usual facilities including bars and restaurants, shops, ticket counters, and disabled travelers assistance. Trento S. Chiara is smaller and further away from the city center so you will need to organize additional public transport to get there.
During the busy and quiet times of the year, with either the most frequent trains or once a week from Florence to Trento, the train company operating is Trenitalia. Almost all train travel from Florence to Trento has one or two scheduled transfers. During the more quiet times of the year that have fewer train departures, there is a direct train line, but it runs from a different station from Florence.
Trenitalia offers its Frecciargento, Frecciarossa, and Regionale trains on this route. The Frecciarossa line is the fastest at up to 190 mph (300 km/h), then the Frecciargento line which goes up to 155 mph (249 km/h), then Regionale which is a bit slower than the other two, but very common when traveling around Italy. During the time of year when there are more frequent trains, you can book a ticket that will have one or more of these train options. For example, you may leave depart from Florence on the Frecciarossa line, but when you transfer you could board a Regionale line for the rest of your journey.
Regardless of which train line you board, Frecciargento, Frecciarossa, and Regionale, you will find ample room for your luggage with comfortable seating. These trains also offer food services like a bistro shop. You can also purchase a base ticket or upgrade to the economy or super economy tickets. These tickets feature higher-end seating on the train as well as flexibility in cancellation or rebooking of your ticket. Another added bonus to buying early is being able to look at different times of the day and dates to see when some tickets are cheaper than others. Particularly with Trenitalia, if you are a student or senior, they offer special pricing for those groups. If you are not in a big rush to get to Trento, you can also book train tickets for long-distance trains like the Regionale line that may be a bit cheaper, but take a little longer to get there.
When departing from Florence, you have various train station options to start your route from including Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Firenze Campo di Marte and Firenze Rifredi. When arriving in Trento, you can end your trip in train stations like Trento, Trento Santa Chiara and Trento, San Bartolameo.
