Traveling from Florence to Venice feels like shifting from Renaissance grandeur to canal-side romance in just a few hours. The high-speed route covers about 160 miles (260 km) in roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes, making it one of the fastest ways to move between these two historic cities. With city-center stations at both ends, the journey feels smooth from start to finish. Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning the same trip.

Train from Florence to Venice
Most Florence to Venice train services depart from Firenze Santa Maria Novella and arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia. High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains complete the journey in just over 2 hours, while slower regional options take closer to 5 hours. I chose a mid-morning high-speed departure so I could have an earlier start in Venice.
I reserved my ticket on Omio a few days in advance and secured a fare of €46. Boarding at Firenze Santa Maria Novella was quick and simple, with the ticket stored digitally on my phone. Platforms are announced about 15 to 20 minutes before departure, and the signage is easy to follow.
I arrived at the station 25 minutes early for a relaxed start. After grabbing a bottle of water and a pastry at a station café, I made my way to the platform. Onboard ID checks can happen, so keeping your passport and ticket accessible is helpful.
Firenze Santa Maria Novella sits right in Florence’s historic center, within walking distance of major landmarks. The station offers restrooms, a choice of cafés and even small supermarkets to stock up on drinks and snacks.
Since my hotel was nearby, I walked to the station, which made departure feel relaxed. If you are staying farther out, tram and bus connections make access easy. Arriving early gives you time to locate your carriage and settle in calmly.
Arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia is always memorable. The station opens directly onto the Grand Canal. Stepping outside, you see boats instead of taxis. Vaporetto stops are directly in front of the station, making onward travel simple. The day was beautiful, so I decided to walk to my accommodation.
Trains from Florence to Venice run frequently throughout the day, often every 30 to 60 minutes on high-speed services. Early departures begin in the morning, with evening options available as well. The 2-hour and 15-minute journey time makes this route efficient and easy to plan around sightseeing.
On the train to Venice, I traveled in standard class on a high-speed Frecciarossa and selected a window seat. The seats were nice and wide with comfortable legroom, and the fold-down tray easily supported my laptop. Power outlets were available, and connecting to the Wi-Fi was easy after entering my ticket details.
Luggage storage on board was generous, with overhead racks for small bags and larger spaces for suitcases at the end of the carriage. I traveled with only a backpack, but you can bring up to three pieces, weighing a combined 25 kg.
As we moved north, Florence’s dense cityscape gave way to open plains and distant hills. The train moved smoothly and quietly, which made the short journey feel even faster.
Booking your ticket a few days ahead of time often secures better fares on high-speed trains from Florence to Venice. On Omio, you can select a window seat during booking, which is what I always prefer. Budgeting for coffee and local vaporetto transport helps you calculate your full travel cost.
