When planning a trip through Italy, the route from Rome to Milan is a classic. Not only does it connect two of Italy’s most iconic cities, but it also gives you a chance to embrace one of the most beautiful ways to travel the country: by train. I’ve taken trains all over the world, from the French Belle Époque to the Peruvian PeruRail to Machu Picchu, and I still get excited when boarding a Frecciarossa or Intercity in Italy. Trains have a special place in my heart, and this journey proved once again why they’re my preferred mode of transport over flying, especially for routes like this one. Let’s dive into everything you need to know to enjoy the Rome to Milan train route to the fullest.

The grand facade of Roma Termini train station on a sunny day
You’ll be traveling from Rome (Roma Termini) to Milan (Milano Centrale)—a distance of roughly 570 kilometers. Trains cut through central and northern Italy, crossing Lazio, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and finally into Lombardy. There are four main train types you can take: Frecciarossa (Trenitalia) – High-speed, luxurious, and efficient. Italo – Private high-speed trains with great deals and modern interiors. Intercity (IC) – More affordable, slightly slower, with reserved seating. Regionale – Not recommended for this route due to frequent stops, but it can be suitable for shorter distances between nearby cities. As a train enthusiast, I often choose high-speed options, but I’ve also taken the Intercity for a more relaxed and scenic journey. Both options make the trip worthwhile in different ways.
I opted for Frecciarossa for my morning departure. The journey took just under 3 hours, and the ride was smooth and peaceful. With onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets, and a café car serving espresso, I had everything I needed to work, write, and gaze out the window. I also considered taking Intercity, which costs less and takes around 6 hours, but offers a slower rhythm and more scenic stops. If you have the time, this is a lovely way to travel through Italy without rushing. Booking through Omio was easy—I compared options, selected my seat and fare, and had my ticket ready in the app in minutes. No printing, no stress.

Roma Termini Station is the largest station in Italy and a key hub in the south. Located in the city center, it’s easily accessible by metro, tram, or taxi. With shops and cafés, it’s ideal to arrive early and relax before your train. Milano Centrale Station is stunning—a mix of grandeur and function. Once you arrive, you’re just steps from Milan’s metro, taxis, and several hotels. Its architecture alone is worth a pause before heading into the city.
Trains from Rome to Milan run almost every 30 minutes during the day, especially Frecciarossa and Italo. I took the 08:50 Frecciarossa, arriving in Milan just after 11:40. Intercity trains are less frequent but still available throughout the day—perfect for slower travelers who want to take the scenic route.
Train Classes and Facilities I traveled in Standard Class, which still felt refined and comfortable. Plush leather seats, clean bathrooms, plenty of legroom, and free Wi-Fi made the journey fly by. I visited the café bar for a cappuccino and a light snack and got back to my seat in time to enjoy the views near Florence and Bologna. Food, Staff & Cleanliness The train was spotless, and the staff professional and kind. I recommend bringing a small picnic if you want to enjoy a full breakfast or lunch onboard—though the café car has decent options, too.

The magnificent facade of the Milan Duomo, with tourists in the square.
I booked my Frecciarossa seat two weeks in advance and paid €29. If you book early, you might find tickets from €19, especially on Italo. Frecciarossa/Italo: €19–€59, depending on time and class Intercity: €19–€25 (more flexibility, slightly slower) Regionale: €17+, but not recommended for this route Train: €19–€29 (Frecciarossa/Italo), €19–25 (Intercity) Hotel: €100/night (mid-range in Milan) Meals: €40/day Museums/attractions: €20–30/day Bonus: Scenic Views & Best Seats If you’re a scenic train lover like me, try to sit on the left side when heading north for better views near Tuscany. For views: Left side (Rome to Milan direction) For quiet: Business Class (Frecciarossa), Prima/Club (Italo), or IC First Class Avoid: Seats next to the café car if you want minimal foot traffic.

If you're traveling between Rome and Milan, skip the flight and board a train instead. It’s fast, stylish, environmentally friendly, and surprisingly soulful. Whether you ride Frecciarossa at full speed or enjoy the nostalgic pace of an Intercity, you’ll find that Italy isn’t just about the destination—it’s about the journey. Booking with Omio was easy, the ride was smooth, and the arrival? Unforgettable.
