Traveling from Berlin to Hamburg by train is a simple and efficient way to get between two of Germany’s major cities. It’s quick, runs often, and takes the stress out of travel. Whether you're heading north for a visit, a meeting, or just passing through, this is one of the easiest routes you can take.

The Berlin to Hamburg train route is served by Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed ICE trains, covering about 280 kilometers in two hours and five minutes. The trains depart all day long, approximately every 30 minutes during busy hours. You’ll also find Intercity (IC) and regional services, but ICE is your best bet for speed and comfort. These are among the best trains I’ve used in all of Europe.
I booked a First Class train ticket through Omio and received a mobile ticket instantly. Boarding the train was simple, with no passport control or airport-style security. The whole process felt smooth and straightforward. There’s no need to arrive at Berlin Hbf super early, but I recommend giving yourself a bit of buffer time due to the size of the train station.
I started at Berlin Hbf, one of the biggest and busiest train stations in Europe. It’s built across multiple levels and includes shops, restaurants, and escalators that feel more like something you’d see at an airport. In case you want to grab something for the ride, you’ll find bakeries, a grocery store, and plenty of snack options in the station. The signage is clear, but it’s smart to get there a bit early, especially if it’s your first time navigating Berlin Hbf.
The train arrived at Hamburg Hbf, a much more compact but equally busy station. Exiting is easy, and you’ll immediately see signs pointing toward the U-Bahn, buses, and exits.
Trains between Berlin and Hamburg run frequently, usually every 30 minutes during the day. I caught an early afternoon ICE train and arrived in just under two hours. You can also take IC or regional trains, but they take longer and typically don’t offer the same level of comfort.
I had a solo First Class seat by the window. It was quiet, clean, and had just enough separation to feel private. Across the aisle were two-seaters with a shared table, ideal for people traveling together. On ICE trains between Berlin and Hamburg, you can bring luggage free of charge. There’s no strict weight or size limit, but you must be able to carry your bags yourself and store them safely. Smaller items can go under your seat or in overhead racks, while larger suitcases should be placed in designated luggage areas near the doors or in the middle of the carriage. Ensure that aisles and safety equipment remain unobstructed. Wi-Fi worked fine for most of the ride, and there was a power outlet at every seat. The bistro car was available, too, but for a short trip like this, I didn’t feel the need to go. Still, it’s good to know you can get a hot drink or meal on board. Scenery and Views This journey from Berlin to Hamburg by train isn’t especially scenic, but it’s a pleasant ride through stretches of forest, flat countryside, and small towns. There’s no real “best” side to sit on, so just choose based on the sun or where the free seat is. The wide windows and quiet ride make it a good time to read, work, or just relax. Arriving in Hamburg Once at Hamburg Hbf, I headed up to the main hall. I had a few minutes before checking into my hotel, so I grabbed a snack. The station has a pretty solid selection of food, including a kebab place that serves good fast food for a station. If you're continuing on the U-Bahn, it’s right below the station and easy to reach.

I booked my First Class Berlin-to-Hamburg train ticket in advance on Omio for about €40. It felt like a good value for the comfort and quieter environment. If you’re looking to save money, Second Class is totally fine, especially since this trip is so short.
