We left Copenhagen on time. Unfortunately, a train ahead of us broke down, so ours was massively overcrowded. Accordingly, there were hardly any seats. So we were forced to sit on the floor for over 3 hours until we changed trains in Flensburg. It was an odyssey.
Advantages
IconEnvironmental friendliness
IconLandscape
IconPrice
Disadvantages
IconRail replacement service
IconMany transfers
IconHardly any wifi in Denmark
Construction work in Denmark made my journey from Copenhagen's Sydhavn district to Hamburg more difficult - I had to change trains three times in total! The trains in Denmark seem to me to be a little more cramped than in Germany, and the wifi is also more limited, if available at all. Power sockets are also in short supply. I couldn't find a toilet on the S-Bahn, nor on the bus of the rail replacement service. Only on the Intercity from Korsoer did I find one that was okay. I was impressed by the multilingual announcements made by the train staff on the IC and the fantastic view as we travelled over the Great Belt. Without construction work on a direct train, the journey is more worthwhile, especially with an early-booked rail fare.
Advantages
IconSpacious seats
Disadvantages
IconCleanliness
IconOvercrowded
On my train journey from Copenhagen to Hamburg, I enjoyed the comfort of Deutsche Bahn: Spacious seats and nice staff. It was dirty in my carriage. There were beer bottles and newspapers on the floor. The journey was longer than expected. The service was solid, but the price-performance ratio was not right.
Advantages
IconSimple booking
Disadvantages
IconWeak internet
Despite the weak wifi, I found the journey great because I was able to book the ticket easily and cheaply online. I also thought it was great that I didn't have to change trains and therefore reached my destination very quickly. I also liked the clean toilets.
Advantages
IconPunctuality
Disadvantages
IconNothing
I would like to start by saying that the train was very punctual. The staff were able to help me with a problem and acted very calmly. The sanitary facilities were mostly clean, although some of the toilets had disgusting faeces. To cut a long story short, I would definitely recommend the trip and give it five stars. Fortunately, it was not necessary to change trains.
Advantages
IconSimple booking
IconNo change
Disadvantages
IconToo expensive
What I really liked about the journey from Copenhagen was that I quickly found a ticket online that didn't require me to change trains. Payment was also flawless, but the ticket was quite expensive. Nevertheless, the journey was good and pleasant, as I reached my destination quite quickly. I also thought it was great that the wifi worked for the most part and the toilets were clean.
Advantages
IconNice staff
IconPunctual
Disadvantages
Icon-
The staff were very friendly to me. The journey took around 5 hours and from hour 3 I found the seats uncomfortable. But after a short "walk" I was fine again. There was a power socket and I was able to relax and work on my laptop because it was quiet on the train. The train itself was in a well-cleaned condition. The toilet was relatively clean, but smelled very unpleasant. We arrived at our destination station on time.
Advantages
IconFast arrival
Disadvantages
IconDirty toilets
This journey from Copenhagen to Hamburg really impressed me because I was able to book the ticket online and it was very cheap. It was also great that I was able to reach my destination in no time at all and didn't have to change trains. I was also particularly impressed by the good wifi, which meant I could watch films throughout the journey. Nevertheless, I found it a shame that the toilets were messy.
Advantages

Disadvantages
IconUnfortunately 10 minutes too late
We arrived at our destination station, Hamburg Hbf, about 10 minutes late. The train staff were very friendly. The train was clean and in good condition, the seats were comfortable and the toilet was also very clean. Power sockets were available to charge my mobile phone. I didn't have to change trains and the journey took just under 5 hours. It was very pleasant that the train was very quiet.
Advantages

Disadvantages
IconNone at all
What struck me immediately was that the staff were always friendly and helpful and made every effort to make the journey as pleasant as possible. In addition, the sanitary facilities and seating were extremely hygienic and clean. I was able to book the ticket in advance without any problems. Overall, I can only give the journey a full 5 stars.
Advantages
IconCleanliness
IconComfortable
Disadvantages
IconService Operation
On the train journey from Copenhagen to Hamburg I enjoyed the comfort and cleanliness, but the service could be better. The journey time was pleasant, but the value for money could be better. Overall a solid experience, although unfortunately the train was delayed.
Advantages
IconGood wifi
Disadvantages
IconLoud guests
The EC 399 departed slightly late from Copenhagen to Munich, I didn't have to change trains, which made travelling by train very pleasant. Thanks to the good wifi, I was able to do some work and wifi without any problems. The staff on the train were really nice and helpful. They helped me to find my seat.
Advantages
IconHalfway on time
Disadvantages
Iconit was not clean
I looked at my watch and my transport was exactly 4 minutes late. I've experienced worse. Inside, I came across dirty benches upholstered in usable fabric. At least it was cheap. I didn't speak to the staff, which is why I can't give a rating.
Advantages
IconPrice
Disadvantages
IconPunctuality
I attach great importance to hygiene and was given a hygienic space. What I value at least as much is punctuality. Unfortunately, this was not guaranteed. To make it clear, I had to wait exactly 23 minutes at the station. On long-distance journeys, I don't think such a delay should actually happen. For some reason, the air on the train was very stuffy and I had trouble breathing.
Advantages
Iconhygienic toilets
Disadvantages
IconThe staff were unfriendly.
This is a journey that I have positive memories of. The aspect of punctuality was fulfilled flawlessly. However, I had problems with the staff. When I asked them for information, they turned their backs on me and didn't seem to have much interest in my well-being. When I went to the toilet, I noticed that it had been cleaned in an exemplary manner.
Advantages
IconCopenhagen trains reliable
IconPlenty of space
IconBoardbistro also open at night
Disadvantages
IconPrices on board
IconNo sleeping car
IconDuration of the journey
Fortunately, I still had a train with a board bistro. This is being abolished on all IC trains. The prices are quite high. So I just resorted to a drink with my railway status. Unfortunately, all the connections from Copenhagen are without sleeping carriages, which in my case is a poor solution for a journey time of 7 hours. What a shame, DB could definitely do better.
Advantages
IconGood service
Disadvantages
IconTrain was too late
I boarded a train that was 15 minutes late. It was mostly clean. Unfortunately, the toilets were not well cleaned. I was able to wifi a nice view and had free wifi. It was very quiet and I watched a film. In total, I spent just over 5 hours on the train.
Advantages
IconIt was very clean
Disadvantages
IconThe staff was unfriendly
The journey itself was undoubtedly very relaxing. Unfortunately, the staff were very unfriendly and didn't make a particularly pleasant impression. However, I really liked the fact that I had a seat to myself, which was very comfortable. The price-performance ratio was very good. The train journey took about 4 hours and 30 minutes. In conclusion, I give the connection 4 stars.
Advantages
IconIt was clean
Disadvantages
IconThe train was too late
The train was a few minutes late, but that's not too bad. I liked the fact that it wasn't dirty. My seat was very well upholstered. The staff were very respectful and open to questions. I watched a film because there was good wifi.
Advantages
IconPunctuality
Disadvantages
IconPesonal
There is only one negative point that I can remember. The staff were not polite and did not help me. Otherwise, I remember a clean and comfortable seat, as well as fast wifi. I bought the ticket on the website at a very fair price. On top of that, the train left on time and arrived at my destination. As a result, I give it 4 stars.

Copenhagen to Hamburg By Train: Crossing Three Amazing Bridges

Introduction

Connecting Copenhagen to continental Europe is the vital EuroCity service, linking the railway networks of Scandinavia to the rest of Europe. Trains from Copenhagen to Hamburg run roughly every two hours and take a scenic route, crossing over three spectacular bridges. In this guide, I’ll show you what to expect from the journey and how to make the most of it.

Route Overview

Danish State Railways (DSB) and Deutsche Bahn (DB) operate 5–7 daily trains between the two cities. The journey takes just under 5 hours.

You’ll also find night trains operated by SJ and Snälltåget, coming from Sweden, but given the short travel time, I’d stick with the DSB/DB daytime trains.

If you're planning to travel from Copenhagen to Hamburg, there are also buses and flights, but most buses take the Rødby–Puttgarden ferry, skipping the iconic bridges. You can compare the different transport options on Omio, but I recommend you take the train for the scenery!

Transportation Experience

The train from Copenhagen to Hamburg is by far the most convenient way to go from city center to city center. Both Københavns Hovedbanegård and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof are centrally located, with great public transport connections.

While the train used on the Copenhagen to Hamburg route is a bit dated and lacks some amenities, it offers comfortable seats and spectacular views. Starting in late 2025, brand-new Talgo trains are expected to enter service, improving the experience even more.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

All EuroCity trains depart from Københavns Hovedbanegård (Copenhagen Main Station), right by Tivoli Gardens and the historic city center.

Exterior view of Copenhagen Main Station.

Trains arrive at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (Hamburg Main Station), which is just as central and within walking distance to the city’s famous canals and shopping streets.

Schedule & Frequency

There are at least 5 daily departures, with up to 7 in the summer, taking about 5 hours to complete the trip. Trains from Copenhagen to Hamburg depart roughly every 2 hours, but double-check the schedule before you travel.

SJ and Snälltåget night trains also pass through this corridor on routes from Sweden to Germany and Austria. However, I do not recommend this option, as the journey is simply too short to get good sleep going overnight to Hamburg.

Onboard Experience & Services

The DSB/DB EuroCity trains currently use older German Intercity carriages as a stop-gap solution until the Talgo fleet arrives.

The train features:

  • Second Class: Mostly open seating, with some six-seat compartments.
  • First Class: All six-seat compartments, slightly more space, quiet, and guaranteed to have power outlets.
First Class compartment on the Copenhagen to Hamburg train.
Second Class seating on the Copenhagen to Hamburg train.

Comfort is decent in both classes, with good padding and reclining seats. However, be aware that some carriages in Second Class only have a few or no power outlets at all. It’s a similar situation when it comes to Wi-Fi, too. Some carriages are equipped, but there are often a few without. The connection is generally good on the Danish segment, with fast speeds, but it drops considerably once the train enters Germany. If you need internet access, be prepared to move to a different carriage or ensure you have mobile data coverage.

There’s no dining car onboard, but you might see the quirky 7-Eleven Jetpack pass through the train. It's a crew member equipped with a tray of snacks on the front and a hot drink tank on the back, which looks slightly like they are wearing a jetpack. Very limited selection, however, so I recommend grabbing food at Copenhagen Station before departure!

As with most European trains, there are no luggage weight or size restrictions. You can bring as much as you can reasonably carry. However, larger bags may need to be stored in the luggage racks at the ends of the carriage if they don’t fit between or above the seats.

Scenery Highlights

  1. Great Belt Fixed Link: About an hour from Copenhagen, the train enters an impressive 8-kilometer tunnel followed by a 6.6-kilometer bridge. It's Denmark’s longest fixed water crossing!
The train crossing the Great Belt Fixed Link bridge.
  1. Little Belt Bridge: A classic bridge from 1935, offering beautiful views of Lillebælt and the surrounding nature park.
The train crossing the Little Belt Bridge.
  1. Rendsburger Hochbrücke: To gain enough height to clear ship traffic, the train makes an almost complete loop on itself while gaining altitude before crossing over the Kiel Canal. It looks very impressive!

These engineering marvels and the changing Danish-German landscape make the journey fly by!

The train passing under the Rendsburger Hochbrücke bridge.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

  • Second Class: From €28.99
  • First Class: From €59.99 (free hot drink, water, and snack while the train is in Denmark)

Prices vary by demand and timing, so book early for the best deal! I find the comfort upgrade in First Class to be minor on this train. Stick to Second Class unless you want guaranteed power outlets or prefer to sit in a compartment.

My Trip Cost

  • First Class Ticket: €79.99 (booked a week ahead)
  • Seat Reservation: €6.50

Total: €86.49

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • First Class travel is the only way to guarantee a power outlet at your seat.
  • Seat reservations on this route are mandatory during the summer. That said, these trains can get packed on weekends and busy travel days, so I recommend reserving one regardless.
  • There are only small snacks on offer, so pack your own lunch or grab to-go from the station in Copenhagen.

Conclusion

The DSB/DB EuroCity train from Copenhagen to Hamburg may not be the newest on the tracks, but it more than makes up for it with unforgettable views and a smooth, scenic ride. This route showcases some of the most impressive railway engineering in Northern Europe.

Taking the Copenhagen to Hamburg train is easy, affordable, and far more memorable than flying or taking the bus, and booking your ticket is just a few clicks away on Omio. Just don’t forget to reserve a seat and grab snacks before departure!
