While making my way from Morocco to the UK without flying, I needed to cross all of Spain, and the best way to do that was by train. I traveled from Seville to Barcelona by train, and it turned out to be the perfect leg of the journey: fast, reliable, and surprisingly affordable when booked in advance. If you’re planning a similar journey or simply want to experience Spain by rail, here’s everything you need to know about traveling from Seville to Barcelona by train.

Route overview

I began my journey at Seville–Santa Justa, the city’s main railway station and a key hub in southern Spain. From here, you can catch high-speed trains to Barcelona, Madrid, and many cities in between. My journey ended at Barcelona Sants, the primary station in the Catalan capital and one of Spain’s busiest. The total travel time was just 5 hours and 51 minutes, which is impressively fast for a journey covering 993 km (617 miles). There are also alternative routes that involve a change at Madrid Atocha, with more frequent services running along the Seville to Madrid and Madrid to Barcelona lines. For speed, comfort, and convenience, this is without doubt the best way to travel from Seville to Barcelona by train.

Transportation experience

Booking my trip was incredibly simple. I just searched for and selected my journey, made a quick payment, and received my tickets right in the Omio app. The QR code on my ticket was all I needed to board the Seville to Barcelona train, meaning no paper printouts or extra steps required. While I only seriously considered taking the train, there are a couple of other options worth mentioning. Seville to Barcelona flights are popular and arguably the fastest in terms of time in the air, but once you factor in traveling to and waiting at the airport, the difference often comes down to just a couple of hours. You could also take a bus from Seville to Barcelona, but those journeys are painfully long, usually over 18 hours, and typically include a transfer.

Departure station

There are a few cafés at Seville–Santa Justa Station, but the prices can be quite expensive. I paid €3 for a bottle of water! If you have time, grab snacks or drinks in the city before heading to the station.

Arrival station

The Seville to Barcelona route starts at Seville–Santa Justa Railway Station, about 3.2 km from the city center. You can reach it easily by taking bus 21, hopping in an Uber, or enjoying a 30-minute walk. Your app QR code is all you need to board, but keep in mind that long-distance trains in Spain require a quick airport-style baggage scan, so it’s smart to arrive with a bit of extra time. The train arrives at Barcelona Sants Railway Station, about 4 km from the city center. Uber also works here, or you can take the L5 metro to reach places like the Sagrada Familia. Like in Seville, there are several cafés and restaurants inside the station, but you’ll find better prices and more variety if you eat outside.

Schedule & frequency

There are usually two or three direct trains per day between Seville and Barcelona, operated by Renfe. I took the 8:37 AM AVE service, which got me to Barcelona at 2:25 PM. You’ll also find at least one direct option with Iryo, Spain’s budget-friendly rail provider.

Onboard experience & services

Renfe trains on this route are spacious, modern, and surprisingly comfortable. Everything, from the seats to the bathrooms, was clean and stayed that way throughout the ride. The onboard Wi-Fi worked for most of the journey, though it did cut out occasionally, and every seat came with its own power outlet for charging devices. There were roomy tray tables, and some carriages had shared table seats for groups. I had a medium-sized suitcase, which I had to store in the luggage rack at the end of the carriage. On AVE high-speed trains between Seville and Barcelona, you can typically bring up to three pieces of luggage, not exceeding 25 kg combined total. There was also a restaurant car, where I grabbed a traditional Spanish breakfast: pan con tomate (toasted bread with tomato), simple but delicious.

You can usually book Renfe trains up to three months in advance, and I’d highly recommend doing so as soon as you know your travel dates, especially since fares tend to rise the closer you get to departure. Here’s a

Top tips & recommendations

  • Booked earlier: I booked around a month ahead, but looking back, I probably could’ve saved some money by booking further in advance.
  • Filled up my water bottle: I forgot to top it up at the hotel and ended up paying €3 for a bottle of water at the station (lesson learned!).
  • Downloaded work before: Although the Wi-Fi generally worked, the connection was a bit unreliable at times, which made it difficult to get any real work done, especially since I hadn’t downloaded my files beforehand.
  • Considered Iryo: I went with Renfe, which I’ve used before and really like, but in hindsight, Iryo might have been a smart, budget-friendly alternative worth considering.

Conclusion

Traveling from Seville to Barcelona by train was an enjoyable experience, and I arrived in Barcelona by mid-afternoon. That left me with plenty of time to start exploring the city the same day. I’d highly recommend this mode of transport over buses or flights. Why? It’s more comfortable and far less stressful overall. Booking my ticket on Omio made the whole process even simpler. I travelled the connection Seville to Barcelona on 17 March at 5pm, the first train had the train number 3172 and after the change 6196. The route would be possible without changing trains. The seat was comfortable and the seats could also be reserved. The whole train was clean and hygienic, but the toilets were a bit dirty. Unfortunately, I also had connection problems with the free internet. The staff were nice and helpful, they helped me to connect to the internet.

On 4 July 2021, I drove from Seville to Barcelona. The journey took about 6 hours. The train was train number 3610 and seats could be reserved. I was also able to ask the nice and helpful staff for information about the long journey. The toilets were unfortunately a bit dirty, but the rest of the train was clean and hygienic. The staff on board were friendly and helpful.

Seville, Barcelona was the connection I travelled on 14 May, on train number 3180, and the entire journey took 6 hours in the end. What I would like to mention is that the train was really exceptionally clean and hygienic. The staff were helpful and nice. The journey to Barcelona was very relaxed. I was picked up from the train very punctually and was looking forward to a nice journey. However, the seats were not at all comfortable and barely padded, so I preferred to spend the time standing up. Fortunately, the train was well air-conditioned as it was an incredibly hot day. Some of the staff even spoke German.

My train journey from Seville to Barcelona with Deutsche Bahn was very pleasant overall. The seats were large and offered plenty of legroom, which made the long journey really comfortable. I particularly liked the service on board, the staff were friendly. The cleanliness of the train was also good, which left a positive overall impression. One small point of criticism from me, however, would be that the price of the ticket seems a little high compared to other offers. Overall, however, it was a solid journey.

The journey took almost 6 hours and I changed trains once. The train number was 00694 and I can report a very clean train. My seat was very clean and I had a fold-out table to work on. My journey from Seville to Barcelona on the AVE 2194 and Euromed 1437 trains was absolutely great! The total journey time was about 5 hours and 45 minutes, including a quick and easy change of trains. The AVE from Seville to Madrid was extremely comfortable - spacious seats, quiet, and the wifi worked well. The change in Madrid was super easy, and the connecting train to Barcelona (Euromed) was just as pleasant. The cleanliness and service on both trains were of a high standard and the staff were very friendly. Although it was a change of trains, the journey was absolutely stress-free. I would definitely recommend this connection to anyone who wants to travel through Spain in a relaxed and comfortable way!

My journey on the AVE 3942 from Seville to Barcelona was very pleasant overall. The train departed on time at 6.54am and reached Barcelona in exactly 5 hours and 51 minutes, an impressive achievement for this route. The on-board restaurant offered a good selection of food and drinks, and I particularly enjoyed the delicious lunch menu. The train staff were friendly and attentive throughout. They answered all questions patiently and ensured a smooth service. The seats were comfortable and I had enough legroom for the long journey. The wifi worked perfectly, so I was able to use the time productively. The only minor downside was the high price, which is reasonable for the service provided, but not exactly cheap. The early departure time could also be challenging for some travellers. Overall, it was a very good travelling experience. The combination of speed, comfort and service makes the AVE 3942 an excellent choice for the Seville-Barcelona route.

The journey on the Iryo #06013 train was an absolute highlight. The high-speed train shone with a spotlessly clean, modern interior and extremely comfortable seats. The train was surprisingly quiet, despite the high speed. The wifi worked like clockwork and the power sockets in the seats were super handy. The service on board was first class, with a friendly crew and excellent catering. Punctuality was impeccable and the final destination was even reached a little earlier than originally planned. The journey time of just under 5.5 hours on this long route is amazing. In addition, the beautiful view or rather the beautiful view of the Spanish landscape through the large, clean windows - simply first class! All in all, this was an exemplary train journey, which speaks for modern and comfortable travelling in every respect. All thumbs up for this, highly recommended!

It was very clean and I had no problems finding a comfortable seat for myself. There was also very good wifi and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It was very hygienic in the washrooms and I think the price I paid for the ticket was very fair and reasonable. All in all, the train journey with train number 2826 was good, but also a little tedious. The journey took almost 6 hours and included a change of trains, which added to the travelling effort. The first train was pleasant and on time, but the change was a little hectic. The whole connection was reliable and the time passed fairly quickly due to the good facilities on the train. There was plenty of space, power sockets and wifi without charge. It was a pleasant journey despite the long journey, although the changeover was a little tiring.

Renfe Alvia are high-speed trains with top speeds of up to 250km/h operated by Renfe, Spain’s national railway company. Alvia trains cover most cities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, Alicante, Zaragoza and Cadiz. They are somewhat slower than Renfe AVE and AVLO (high-speed and low cost) but cover more destinations and are a comfortable and effective way of travelling around Spain.
