I traveled to Cadiz from Seville via Media Distancia train. I boarded the train at the San Bernardo station. When searching for information about trains to Cadiz, most people are likely to come across Sevilla-Santa Justa station, which is recommended for its status as the main railway station in the city. However, for some, San Bernardo may actually be the better place to begin the journey. It is smaller, quieter, and easier to get to from the city center. Many trains to Cadiz stop there after leaving Sevilla-Santa Justa, so it can be easier to avoid the crowds.

Cádiz seaside promenade
The railway between Seville and Cádiz runs for roughly 120 kilometers across western Andalusia. Most trains on this route are Renfe Media Distancia services, although a few Alvia trains also operate between the cities. The journey usually takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes. Trains run regularly throughout the day, generally every one to two hours, with around 13 departures daily between 06:45 and 22:00.
I boarded the train at San Bernardo, a station located just outside Seville’s historic center and well connected by metro and tram. Once the train left the city, the landscape quickly opened into the flat farmland typical of this part of Andalusia. Along the way the train passes through towns such as Utrera, Jerez de la Frontera, and El Puerto de Santa María before reaching Cádiz.
The trip itself is fairly short, around ninety minutes, which makes it easy to spend the time reading, working for a while, or simply watching the countryside through the window.
San Bernardo station is relatively small, with only a few platforms and direct street access. Because of its size, it’s much easier to navigate than Santa Justa. Santa Justa remains the station most travelers will see mentioned in travel guides, since it handles high-speed and long-distance trains. However, if your train stops at San Bernardo, boarding there can make the start of the journey considerably simpler.
The train arrives at Cádiz railway station, located right at the edge of the historic center near Plaza de Sevilla. The station itself is relatively small, with four platforms and six tracks, but its location is extremely convenient. From there it’s just a short walk to places like Plaza de San Juan de Dios, the cathedral, and the rest of the old town.
Trains between Seville and Cádiz run regularly throughout the day. On average there are about 13 departures daily, which makes it fairly easy to plan either a day trip or a longer stay on the coast.
Media Distancia trains on this route are fairly simple but comfortable enough for a journey of around an hour and a half. Seats are standard, with space for luggage and a smooth ride that feels more relaxed than traveling the same route by car. Personally, I like this route because it gives me just enough time to work on my laptop for a while, then look up occasionally and watch the Andalusian landscape pass by.
Ticket prices usually range between €13 and €18, depending on availability and when you book. It’s a good idea to buy tickets in advance, as Media Distancia trains can fill up quickly, especially during summer and weekends when many people travel to Cádiz for the day. If you’re planning to return to Seville on the same day, it’s also worth booking the return ticket at the same time. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €16 |
| Food & drinks | €4 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 22 |
The train from Seville to Cádiz is one of the easiest rail journeys you can take in Andalusia. Media Distancia trains run regularly and reach the coast in around ninety minutes. Starting the trip from San Bernardo rather than Santa Justa can make the experience even smoother, particularly if you prefer to avoid the larger crowds of Seville’s main station.
