I’d been dreaming of crossing Europe by rail, so I decided to make my way from Zürich to Barcelona entirely by train. This route combines France’s SNCF TGV network with Spain’s AVE train operated by Renfe, creating one of the most scenic ways to travel from the Alps to the Mediterranean. The ride blends Swiss precision with Spanish sunshine, and window seats are always my favourite for the incredible views through Switzerland. In this guide, I’ll share what to expect from booking to arrival and a few tips to make your journey to Barcelona even smoother.
The journey from Zürich to Barcelona by train covers about 1,035 km and usually takes around 10 hours, with a connection in France – typically Lyon or Montpellier – before continuing into Spain. The first part of the trip runs on SNCF TGV InOui trains, while the final leg from the French border to Barcelona Sants is operated by Renfe AVE. It’s a long but memorable ride, shifting from Alpine lakes and vineyards to coastal hills. At least it doesn’t take over 18 hours like the bus to Barcelona. For me, the train is by far the best way to travel from Zürich to Barcelona.
I booked my Zürich to Barcelona train ticket on Omio, and it was very easy from start to finish. The search showed both SNCF TGV and Renfe AVE options on one screen. I grabbed my digital ticket, picked a window seat, and got my coffee ready. I considered booking a flight from Zürich to Barcelona since the 1 hour and 48 minute air time sounded tempting, but prices were almost double my €129 train fare. For other long-distance routes, check timetables for trains in Europe.
At Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB), right in the city center, there are food stands, bakeries, and large digital boards that make platform checks easy. Security is relaxed, and you simply find your platform and board once the track number appears. I got there about an hour before departure and went to the SBB Cantina on the top floor. The menu had a mix of hot food and breakfast items. I ordered the coffee and croissant combo, while my friends tried the Kickstarter breakfast with muesli, a croissant, bread, and a hot drink. My meal cost about €6.80, and theirs were around €16 each.
You’ll arrive at Barcelona Sants, the city’s main hub. Signs are in Spanish, Catalan, and English, and there are taxis, metros, and cafés right outside. I always enjoy that moment when you step into warm air after a day going through the mountains. From Barcelona Sants, my friends and I took the metro to our hotel. Single tickets are valid for one hour and cost €2.40 per trip.
Depending on the day, there are usually one to two train combinations for this route, with total journey times ranging from 9 hours 45 minutes to 11 hours 30 minutes. There is no direct train between Zürich and Barcelona Sants, so all routes require at least one or two transfers. I chose a 6:00 AM departure to make the most of the daylight. We arrived on time, just after 4:00 PM. It’s worth it for those window views through Switzerland and the Rhône Valley.
I traveled in Second Class on the Renfe AVE + SNCF train from Zurich to Barcelona, and it felt perfectly comfortable thanks to the reclining seats. There are power outlets available, which was great since the trip was long and watching movies on the train takes up a lot of battery power. The Wi-Fi stays strong through most of France. Once we crossed into Spain, the journey continued on a Renfe AVE high-speed train, which connects seamlessly with the French network. The AVE leg from the border to Barcelona Sants was fast, smooth, and quiet, with the same clean, modern interiors and attentive onboard staff that Renfe is known for. The train is climate-controlled, toilets are clean, and luggage fits overhead or on racks at the coach ends. On the train, there was also a café-bar carriage available. This is a good place to go and stretch your legs for the long stretch before Spain. The menu had hot and cold drinks and some typical train food like sandwiches and some baked treats. I already had my fill at Zurich HB, so I didn’t grab anything this time. My favorite part was the window seat. Watching Switzerland’s lakes, snow-dusted peaks, and small French villages glide by was hypnotic. Once you cross into Catalonia, sunlight hits differently. It’s a true “from Alps to sea” journey. The train ride is long but memorable, with views that shift from lakes to vineyards and coastal hills. The Swiss leg is smooth and punctual, and as soon as you pass the lakes into France, the scenery opens wide.
I booked Zürich to Barcelona train tickets on Omio around six weeks early and paid €129 for my Second Class seat. Closer to departure during busy seasons, tickets can easily climb up to €200 or more, so I recommend booking at least a month ahead to secure the best price.

Taking the train from Zürich to Barcelona with SNCF and Renfe AVE is a long journey, but it’s pure travel magic. You’ll see mountains, lakes, and vineyards all in one day. For me, booking a window seat, enjoying snacks, and listening to my favorite playlist turned it into the perfect slow-travel experience. Remember to book tickets early, as prices rise closer to departure. If you’re planning to take this same trip, book your train tickets on Omio to keep all your travel plans in one place.
