By Nancy Sevilla
After spending a full week in Seville, it was finally time to head home by hopping on the train to Barcelona. I really enjoyed the slower pace, local charm, and warm southern vibe, so it was the perfect change of scenery. When it came time to travel back, from Seville Santa Justa to Barcelona Sants by train, I didn’t even think twice. I booked a seat on Renfe's AVE train. It’s always simple, comfortable and a lot less stressful than flying. Here's what you can expect if you’re planning the same adventure.
The Seville to Barcelona railway line covers roughly 1,000 km across Spain. The route connects Santa Justa Station in Seville with Barcelona Sants in just under 6 hours on a direct high-speed train. Direct connections are limited, but if you prefer to avoid transfers, it's worth finding a seat on Renfe's AVE train. Compared with flights to Barcelona, trains save you from traffic to and from the airport or long security queues, dropping you straight into the city center. That’s why I always prefer taking the high-speed train to travel from Seville Santa Justa to Barcelona Sants.
I booked my Renfe AVE train ticket on Omio, which made comparing times straightforward. I filtered for direct routes and found an early morning one, as I wanted to arrive in the afternoon. It was slightly pricier than some connecting options but still cheaper than flying once you factor in luggage fees. I chose a window seat, my go-to for long rides, and loved that it let me relax and nap a bit on the way home. I didn’t even consider taking the bus from Seville to Barcelona, as sitting for 16 to 20 hours was not something I was willing to do.
To catch my train to Barcelona Sants, I grabbed an Uber to Seville Santa Justa after breakfast at my Airbnb. I arrived 40 minutes early, but skipped the cafés this time. Santa Justa has plenty of options if you want coffee or a quick snack before boarding. My recommendation is Cafestore Estación Santa Justa, which opens early for breakfast and serves a great range of Spanish dishes. Inside the station, there are several shops if you need to pick up supplies, along with standard services like luggage storage and ATMs. Security is light but includes an ID check, so it’s worth keeping your passport or ID card handy.

Renfe AVE trains from Seville Santa Justa arrive at Barcelona Sants. By early afternoon, I was back in Barcelona Sants, my usual stop when returning home. From there, I hopped on Metro Line L3 (Green) toward my neighborhood. Besides the Metro, Sants Station connects directly with local Rodalies trains, buses and taxis, making it really easy to continue your journey from here without any added stress.
Renfe's AVE train runs multiple Seville–Barcelona trains daily, but most include at least one transfer in Madrid or Zaragoza. The first departure starts at 6 AM, and the last one is at 4:36 PM. Direct trains are limited, typically one or two per day, so if you prefer a straight ride, filter for “direct” when booking on Omio. My train left at 6:45 AM and arrived at 12:49 PM, right on time. It was the perfect schedule, getting me home before lunch with the whole afternoon free.
On the train from Seville Santa Justa to Barcelona Sants, I was truly impressed with the comfort on board. This ride felt especially peaceful. The coach was quiet, sunlight filled the cabin, and most passengers either dozed or read. I brought water and snack bars with me, and I skipped the onboard café because I’d already had breakfast. There was one there in case you don’t eat before setting off. Don't expect any full meals to be available, but things like chips and pastries are often on the menu. On Renfe AVE trains, there are different fare classes, including Elige Estándar (similar to 2nd class), Elige Confort (1st class), and Premium (1st class with extras). I booked a seat in Elige, and it was more than comfortable for my needs. The seats were spacious and had headrests, along with a gentle recline that made it easy to rest comfortably. I used the plug sockets to charge my phone and watched the scenery shift from Seville’s flat olive groves to the rolling hills of Aragón. For views, I recommend sitting on the right-hand side of the train if you can (when facing north toward Barcelona). Most Renfe AVE trains offer internet through the PlayRenfe platform. The Wi-Fi was stable and fast enough for checking emails and scrolling Instagram without any noticeable lag. Overall, the train stayed clean throughout, including the restrooms, thanks to the attentive crew. It’s the small things like space, calm and reliability that make long-distance rail my favorite way to travel in Spain.
Booking Spanish train tickets early through Omio helps secure the few available direct trains and can sometimes lower fares. I suggest booking at least 4 weeks in advance. On Renfe AVE trains, you can usually bring up to three pieces of luggage, which helps keep costs down. The trains on this route are modern and have plenty of storage overhead and luggage racks by the doors. Here’s what my full trip looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €126 |
| Food & drinks | € |
| Travel to departure station | €7 |
| Travel from arrival station | €2.55 |
| Total | € 135.55 |
Taking the train from Seville to Barcelona was the perfect wrap-up to my week in Andalusia. Despite the early start, it was a calm and comfortable trip that had me back home by lunchtime. I appreciated how smooth the journey with Renfe AVE was, from boarding to arrival, with plenty of time to relax and watch the scenery pass by. Ready to plan your own trip?
