It is perfectly possible to travel from Frankfurt to Barcelona by train in a single day. Although there is no direct train connection between the two cities, you can make the journey easily with just one change of trains in Paris. It's an epic rail journey across Europe on comfortable high-speed trains, with some beautiful views from the window. In this guide, I tell you all you need to know about traveling from Frankfurt to Barcelona by train. Among other things, I explain how you can book your ticket, what to expect on board, and share a few handy travel tips to make the most of your journey.

High-speed train at Paris Gare de Lyon
Traveling by rail from Frankfurt to Barcelona essentially means taking two different trains. First, you board the excellent ICE high-speed train of Germany's national railway company Deutsche Bahn from Frankfurt to Paris Gare de l'Est. Once you arrive at Paris Gare de l'Est, you need to get to another station in the French capital, Paris Gare de Lyon. You can make this transfer by taxi, bus (line 91), or metro (line 5 to Bastille, then change to line 1 for Gare de Lyon). From Paris Gare de Lyon, you can catch the highly comfortable inOui TGV high-speed train to Barcelona, operated by France's national railway company SNCF. In total, the train journey from Frankfurt to Barcelona via Paris covers 1,668 kilometers and takes approximately 12 hours and 40 minutes.
Booking a multi-leg train journey across Europe can be complicated, but Omio makes it simple. The platform makes it easy to compare prices, departure times, and even different travel days. Another thing I like about Omio’s app is its transparency. You can see all the available ticket options, including the different travel classes and fare types. That way, you can choose between cheaper non-flexible tickets or more expensive fully changeable and refundable ones. However, the train isn't the only option on this route. You can also book a bus from Frankfurt to Barcelona or a flight from Frankfurt to Barcelona. If you're flexible about your mode of transport, you can choose whichever option suits you best.

High-speed train at Paris Gare de Lyon
The rail journey from Frankfurt to Barcelona begins at Frankfurt am Main Hbf. Hbf stands for Hauptbahnhof, which simply means "main railway station" in German. It is a large station with plenty of shops, supermarkets, and cafés. You can even choose from several fast-food options (Burger King, KFC, Subway and more) if you want a drink or a bite to eat before your train journey. The station is also well connected by bus, U-Bahn (metro), and S-Bahn (suburban train) to almost everywhere in the Greater Frankfurt area. There are no formal boarding procedures at German train stations: simply check the departures board for your train's platform and board. Your ticket will only be checked by a member of staff once the train is underway.
The arrival station in Barcelona is called Barcelona Sants. Like Frankfurt am Main Hbf, Sants station is a major rail hub. It serves both domestic and international routes and connects easily to the city's public transport network. Because Sants is not centrally located, you will likely need to take a taxi, commuter train (called Rodalies), or the metro to reach your accommodation.
Realistically, there is only one option to travel from Frankfurt to Barcelona by train if you want to complete your journey in a single day. You first need to take the morning Frankfurt to Paris ICE high-speed train, which currently departs from Frankfurt am Main Hbf at 8:53 AM and arrives at Paris Gare de l'Est at 12:51 PM. You then have 1 hour and 51 minutes to transfer from Paris Gare de l'Est to Gare de Lyon by public transport or taxi. From Paris Gare de Lyon, you take the high-speed train to Barcelona, which currently departs at 2:42 PM and arrives at Barcelona Sants at 9:32 PM. More departures are available if you don't mind an overnight stopover along the route. In that case, it's best to book two separate tickets, such as one from Frankfurt to Montpellier and another from Montpellier to Barcelona.
For my Frankfurt to Barcelona train trip, I booked a Second Class ticket for €110. On both legs of the journey, Second Class had a 2+2 seating layout, while First Class provided a more spacious 2+1 configuration with slightly wider and more comfortable seats. There was ample luggage storage on each train, including overhead racks and larger shelves near the doors. I also had access to free Wi-Fi, and there were power sockets at every seat, which made it easy to stay connected and get some work done along the way. What I always love about rail travel is visiting the dining car. Nothing beats enjoying a hot meal and a couple of drinks while watching the world go by from the train window. Both trains had a dining car, although the German train is clearly the better of the two. It had a proper sit-down restaurant carriage (unlike the standing-only area on the French side) and a much more varied menu, including hot meals. I had an early lunch on the train from Frankfurt to Paris, and thoroughly enjoyed my currywurst and Erdinger beer. The train journey from Frankfurt to Barcelona also offers some pretty views, although you have to wait until the final part of the trip. From Frankfurt to Paris, the scenery is pleasant but nothing extraordinary. However, once you board the TGV, the scenery gradually improves, especially after the stop in Montpellier. The train then skirts the Mediterranean coast of southern France, with views of the sea on one side and étangs (lagoons) on the other.
Traveling long distances across Europe by train is great fun and not as daunting as you might think if you’ve never done it before. Although there is no direct train, the journey from Frankfurt to Barcelona is straightforward, requiring just a single change of trains in Paris. The high-speed trains from Frankfurt to Paris and Paris to Barcelona rank among the very best for comfort and onboard amenities, so you can look forward to an excellent journey.
