Connecting two of Europe’s most beer-famous cities, the classic express train, jointly operated by Alex and České dráhy (Czech Railways), offers a slow but pleasant journey covering about 400 kilometers. Running through Bavaria’s dense forests, this route is a must for beer lovers: the train stops in Plzeň, the birthplace of Pilsner, before continuing into Bavaria and finally Munich, famous for its wheat beer (Weißbier).

While buses to Munich and flights from Prague to Munich are available, each taking around 5 to 6 hours from city center to city center. I found the train offers a much more relaxed and scenic experience passing through the thick Bavarian forest. You can easily compare all travel options between the two cities on Omio.
Taking the train from Prague to Munich is very straightforward. Prague Main Station is centrally located, with easy access to the platforms. The train usually arrives 10 to 15 minutes before departure. Having booked in advance on Omio, I simply boarded with my mobile ticket, picked a seat, and enjoyed the journey to Munich Main Station, right in the heart of the city.
Prague Main Station is just a short walk from the Old Town and is well connected by trams and the metro. Inside, you’ll find convenience stores, food outlets, travel shops, and supermarkets. Be sure to follow the signs to the old station hall as well. It’s worth a quick visit, both for its beautiful architecture and what I think is the best café and restaurant in the station.
The train arrives at Munich Hauptbahnhof, which is currently under renovation. While amenities are limited, its central location and connections make it very convenient for travelers.
There are seven daily direct trains from Prague to Munich, jointly operated by České dráhy and Alex (Die Länderbahn). Trains from Prague to Munich depart roughly every two hours and take about 5 hours and 30 minutes. I took the morning train departing at around 7 am.
I arrived 20 minutes early at Prague Main Station and found the train already on the platform. The train typically consists of: Two Alex carriages with six-seat compartments (some are First Class compartments, but the upgrade isn’t really worth it since the difference is minimal). Two or more České dráhy carriages with open airline-style seating. As reservations aren’t mandatory, you can choose any unreserved seat. Important: Sometimes, additional Czech carriages may be detached in Plzeň, so make sure you’re in one marked for Munich. The stretch between Plzeň and Schwandorf is especially scenic, with views of dense forests near Furth im Wald and the pretty Kreuzberg Church near Schwandorf, where the train changes direction. Onboard amenities include: Free Wi-Fi, although very spotty throughout, especially in Germany Power outlets at most seats A mini-bar in the Alex carriage Occasional trolley service, with a selection of hot and cold drinks, as well as chocolate bars and sandwiches, while in Czechia. As with most European trains, you can generally bring as much luggage as you can reasonably carry yourself. However, larger bags may need to be stored in the dedicated racks at the ends of the carriages if they don’t fit above or under your seat. Compared to buses, the train offers more space, better tables, and a more comfortable experience. The ride is perfect for working or enjoying a picnic after visiting the supermarket in Prague. Note: German authorities sometimes conduct spot checks at the border, potentially causing delays of ~30 minutes.

Tickets are dynamically priced, starting from just: €16 in Second Class €39 in First Class, with fully flexible fares going at a maximum of €65. Even at the last minute, the train from Prague to Munich is an affordable option. The top-tier €65 ticket allows for stopovers en route, making it ideal if you want to spend a few hours in Plzeň and continue on a later train the same day. Here’s my

Though not the fastest option, the Prague-Munich train is convenient, affordable, and comfortable.
