I recently took the train from Málaga to Granada with Renfe AVE, and it turned out to be one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to travel across southern Spain by train. For those visiting Andalusia, this high-speed route makes getting between the coast and the mountains effortless, skipping the airport hassle altogether.

Route overview

The journey takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes, running from Málaga María Zambrano Station to Granada Train Station, both located conveniently near the city centers. The train glides past rolling olive groves, rural towns, and mountain landscapes — the kind of journey that reminds you why traveling by train in Spain is always a good idea.

Transportation experience

Booking my train ticket on Omio was quick and seamless. I like how the platform lets you compare schedules and instantly get your e-ticket in the app. I usually choose the Renfe AVE train when traveling within Spain because it’s reliable, allows more luggage, and feels far more relaxing than catching a domestic flight. At Málaga María Zambrano, boarding was smooth. Simply scan your QR ticket at the gate, pass a brief security check, and you’re ready to go. No stress, no airport lines.

Departure station

Located about 15 minutes from Málaga’s city center, Málaga María Zambrano Station is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. You’ll find everything you need: cafés, small shops, and even a supermarket inside. I usually grab a quick sandwich and some water before boarding, since I prefer bringing my own snacks rather than buying on board. There’s plenty of seating while you wait, and digital screens make finding your platform straightforward.

Arrival station

Granada Station is smaller but well-located. It's only about a 10-minute taxi ride or 25-minute walk from the city center. Taxis wait just outside when you exit, and there’s a café if you’d like a quick refreshment before heading out. This is a great arrival point for visiting the Alhambra or checking into one of the city’s nearby boutique hotels.

Schedule & frequency

Renfe AVE runs several trains daily on the Málaga to Granada route, with departures starting around 7:00 AM and continuing until the early evening. I chose the 10:00 AM service, which offered plenty of daylight for scenic window views and gave me time to check into my Airbnb after lunch. If you enjoy landscape photography or simply want the best views, pick a seat on the left side.

Onboard experience & services

The Renfe AVE train feels calm and well organized for a high-speed journey. The seats are wide and comfortable, and I always choose a window seat for the views. Sitting on the left side also gave me a spot to rest against when I wanted to nap. Each seat has a power outlet and a tray table, and the Wi-Fi is fast and reliable for working or streaming. During my trip, I didn’t lose connection once. Renfe AVE trains have an onboard café bar. I usually prefer bringing my own snacks or eating before departure, but I did buy a coffee for €3. If you get hungry, you can also buy sandwiches or baked goods like croissants. The staff are friendly, and the train stays impressively quiet, making it easy to unwind while gliding through Andalusia’s countryside. I usually travel with a carry-on and a backpack, and there’s always plenty of space for both. Passengers can bring up to three bags of up to 25 kg combined. Larger suitcases can be stored on the luggage shelves at the end of each carriage, while smaller bags fit easily overhead or by your seat. The ride wasn’t long, so I didn’t use the restroom, but Renfe trains are generally clean and in good working order.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Tickets are easy to book directly through Omio, and prices depend on the time and day of travel. I booked about a week ahead and paid €32 for my ticket. The mobile ticket arrived instantly in the Omio app, which made boarding quick and paper-free at Málaga María Zambrano.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Book early: Fares increase closer to departure, so securing your ticket a week or two in advance usually gets the best rate.
  • Sit on the left-hand side: For the best mountain and countryside views between Loja and Granada, pick a window seat on the left.
  • Bring your ID or passport: It’s rarely checked on domestic routes, but it’s always smart to have it with you.
  • Pack your own snacks: It’s cheaper and often tastier than what’s sold at the café bar, especially for a short trip.

Conclusion

If you’re planning to explore Andalusia, the Renfe AVE train from Málaga to Granada is one of the most comfortable and scenic ways to travel between the two cities. It’s quick and affordable, and sitting on a train with Wi-Fi and a good book is far more relaxing than waiting around at the airport. Ready to plan your journey? Book your train tickets on Omio and enjoy the ride!

I drove this route for the first time and was really pleased overall. The view from the window was really nice, especially in rural areas with lots of nature. That made the journey pleasant. There was an on-board bistro, which I found practical, even if the prices were quite steep. It was pleasantly quiet in the compartment, which I really appreciated because I just wanted to switch off. The service on board was friendly and helpful, but unfortunately a little infrequent. Unfortunately, the wifi was not as stable as I had hoped, which is why I'm giving it four stars instead of five.

In any case, the train was very punctual. It was a great relief for me that the staff were very helpful. The staff were able to help me if I had a problem. The train was also very clean and hygienic. The reception and wifi were fast and constant. The price of the ticket was reasonable. I can only give it five stars and my recommendation.

I would like to start by saying that there is nothing negative about this connection. The train was very punctual and the staff endeavoured to make the journey as pleasant as possible. Another advantage was that the toilets were very clean and I didn't have to worry about getting sick or anything like that. In conclusion, I can only give it five stars and my explicit recommendation.

Firstly, I would like to mention the toilets, which were exceptionally clean. The rest of the train was also very clean and the comfort was excellent. Unfortunately, there was a delay of 20 minutes on the journey from Malaga to Granada. This meant that the journey took an hour and 40 minutes. I travelled in the A 8855 and have to say that it was very good value for money. The service was very good.

I was able to switch off on this journey. My compartment was almost empty and I used the time to simply relax. I had a very comfortable seat, which I could even recline a little. My journey from Málaga to Granada on the MD 13922 train and subsequent transfer to the Avant 13062 was unexpectedly positive. The total journey time of 1 hour and 50 minutes was impressively short for this route with a change of trains. The first train left Málaga on time and the staff were friendly and helpful. The seats were comfortable enough for the short journey. The change went smoothly as the connecting train was already waiting on the platform and was well signposted. On the second train, I was pleasantly surprised by the modern facilities. The wifi worked perfectly, so I was able to use the time to work. The scenery between the two cities was breathtakingly beautiful, especially as we approached Granada. The train crew on the second train were particularly attentive and regularly offered drinks and snacks. The punctuality was impressive - we arrived in Granada exactly at the advertised time. The only slight downer was the changeover itself, which could be a little stressful for travellers with a lot of luggage. However, the transfer time was sufficient.

Guaranteed comfortable and easy travelling. A direct train connection takes you to Granada in just under 1:30 hours. The journey was very good value without changing trains. I can only recommend this mode of transport.

The train was very punctual. I travelled on train number 2184 and didn't have to change trains. The journey took about 90 minutes. The toilets were very clean and I had a small table to fold out at my seat. The price-performance ratio was right and I would recommend the connection.
