Crossing from Switzerland into Italy by train was one of those travel moments I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. Supposedly calm and bland, the Geneva to Milan route isn’t just a transfer, it’s an experience, and honestly one of the most memorable train journeys I’ve taken in Europe last spring.

Milan Duomo seen from Via Torino.
The journey from Geneva to Milan takes about 4 to 4.5 hours, covering around 320 kilometers (200 miles). I chose a direct Trenitalia EuroCity train, which made everything simple and comfortable from start to finish.
I booked through Omio after comparing a few options, and going direct was definitely the right choice. Flying might seem faster, but when you factor in airport time, the train feels far more relaxed and I must say infinitely more scenic!
Genève station is exactly what you’d expect from a Switzerland train station: clean, calm, and incredibly efficient. I arrived early, grabbed a coffee, and everything just worked smoothly.
Arriving at Milano Centrale felt like stepping into a completely different energy: busy, vibrant, and full of life. It’s a great entry point into the city, well connected by bus, tram, metro and taxi to the rest of Milan.
There are a few direct trains per day, so I recommend choosing one that fits your pace. I took a morning train (really early in the morning) and arrived in Milan in time for lunch, which worked perfectly.
This is where this journey really stands out. I had a comfortable seat, plenty of space, and spent most of the time glued to the window. Lakes, mountains, small towns: it almost felt like watching a movie or a great documentary. There’s also a restaurant car, which makes the experience even better, even if the prices were a bit high.
The train from Geneva to Milan could be pricey: I booked about three weeks in advance and paid around €50. Prices can go up to €90, so it’s absolutely worth planning ahead if you can.

|---|---|
| Ticket price | €52 |
| Food & drinks | €10 |
| Travel to departure station | €3 |
| Travel from arrival station | €2.2 |

If you’re thinking about traveling from Geneva to Milan, I’d absolutely recommend the train. It’s comfortable, scenic, and turns a simple transfer into something memorable. Definitely grab a window seat for this one, I promise it will be worth it!
