A train from Florence to Lucca is a perfect introduction to the landscapes and architecture of northern Tuscany. The journey is short, scenic, and easy to fit into a day. For independent travelers, this is an easy day trip from Florence. Here’s what to expect along the way.

Route overview

Trains for Lucca leave from Florence’s main station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, arriving in Lucca 1 hour and 20 minutes later. Only 60 km separates the two cities, but they are packed with interesting sights. Leaving Florence behind, the train winds through the gentle hills of northern Tuscany, stopping at Prato, Pistoia and the spa town of Montecatini. Cathedral towers, villas and castles rise in the distance.

Transportation experience

The Florence-Lucca route is served only by Trenitalia Regionale trains. There is no high-speed option, but the slower pace means more time to soak in the views. Another advantage of Regionale trains is that ticket prices are fixed, so you do not need to plan in advance. I went on a day trip from Florence, and booked my ticket on Omio over breakfast.

Buses are another option, but they leave from Scandicci rather than the city center. So, unless you’re based in that area, I wouldn’t recommend the bus, especially since train tickets are very reasonable (€10).

Departure station

The modernist geometric frame of Florence Santa Maria Novella is the gateway to one of Italy’s busiest stations. Especially in the high season, aim to arrive 30 minutes before your train for stress-free boarding.

Taxis and buses stop right outside. I walked from the center, stopping at Santa Maria Novella, one of Florence’s most celebrated churches, which is literally across the square from the station.

Arrival station

Lucca is a provincial station with only five platforms. I switched to holiday mode the moment I set foot in its small 19th-century waiting hall. The station sits outside the city walls, and I entered the medieval center through one of the gates.

Schedule & frequency

Trains from Florence to Lucca run from just after 5 am until 10 pm. At peak hours, there is a train every 30 minutes. At quieter times, it goes down to one per hour, so do check the timetable on Omio before booking.

Onboard experience & services

In Florence, seeing the station was busy, I headed for my platform as soon as it appeared on the board. It took me a few minutes to go through the ticket barriers and access the platforms’ area.

Trenitalia Regionale trains offer standard-class seats only, so don’t expect a luxury ride. They are still very clean, with chargers at your seat and space for small trolleys under the seats, as well as dedicated areas for larger suitcases at the end of each carriage. The Wi-Fi isn’t great, and there is no food and drink service, but you won’t need it. The food in Lucca is great!

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

As Regionale ticket prices are fixed, and you cannot reserve a seat, it doesn’t make sense to book in advance. Tickets can be booked up to 5 minutes before departure time, although I wouldn’t try that in a large station like Florence! You can also change your ticket for free on the day of travel, so if your detour to Santa Maria Novella takes longer than expected, you’ll be okay.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Give yourself at least 30 minutes to find your platform and board comfortably without rushing.
  • Stop by Santa Maria Novella on your way, as it’s right across from the station.
  • Buy your drinks and snacks before boarding, as there’s no food service on Regionale trains.

Conclusion

Tour operators sell day trips to Lucca from Florence, but you can just catch a train. The journey is simple to plan, affordable, and runs frequently throughout the day. It gives you more flexibility, is super-easy, and an adventure in itself!

What makes this tower truly unique is its rooftop garden adorned with ancient oak trees—an unusual feature for such structures—that invites visitors to ascend and enjoy breathtaking vistas while connecting with nature amidst urban life.

Finally, we arrive at the Cathedral of San Martino, a masterpiece showcasing Romanesque design elements intertwined with Gothic influences. This sacred site holds great significance as it houses remarkable artworks including works by renowned artists like Ilario da Viterbo; stepping inside feels like entering a living museum where every corner tells stories of faith and artistry through centuries.
