Bologna to Florence by trainBologna to Florence by Train: A Regional Ride Through the Apennines

One of the easiest rail journeys in Italy is the trip from Bologna to Florence. While high-speed trains can cover the distance in just over half an hour, when I have the time I usually prefer the slower option. For this trip I took a Trenitalia regional train. It takes longer than the high-speed services, but when I’m not in a hurry I enjoy traveling on regional trains. The pace is more relaxed and the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Route overview

Bologna and Florence are about 105 kilometers apart and connected by one of the busiest rail corridors in Italy. High-speed trains operated by Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and Italo usually take around 35–40 minutes, departing roughly every 15–20 minutes. Ticket prices typically range between €22 and €35, depending on availability. Regional trains run on the older railway across the Apennine Mountains and take between 1 hour and 1 hour 50 minutes. These services are usually cheaper, with fares typically between €9.70 and €13.

Transportation experience

I boarded the train at Bologna Centrale, one of the main railway stations in Italy. It’s a busy hub with many platforms, so it’s always worth checking the departure boards carefully before heading to the platform. Once the regional train left Bologna, the flat landscape around the city gradually gave way to the hills of the Apennines. Compared with the high-speed route, which runs mostly through tunnels, the regional line feels like a more traditional railway journey. Italy has a long history of railway engineering, and this corridor reflects that. The original nineteenth-century railway still runs alongside newer lines, including the famous Direttissima, which includes a tunnel of almost 19 kilometers and transformed rail connections between Florence, Rome, and northern Italy.

Departure station

Bologna Centrale is one of the busiest railway stations in the country and an important hub for trains traveling across Italy. Despite its size, the station is relatively easy to navigate. Platforms and departure boards are clearly marked. I arrived a little early to find my platform and grab a quick espresso before boarding.

Arrival station

The train arrives at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Florence’s main railway station, located right next to the historic center. From the station I continued toward the San Frediano neighborhood where my accommodation was located. I took bus line C4, which runs through the historic center before reaching the Oltrarno district. The ride took about 15 minutes, passing through narrow streets and small squares before reaching the neighborhood.

Schedule & frequency

Trains between Bologna and Florence run very frequently throughout the day. High-speed trains depart roughly every 15–20 minutes, while regional trains operate less frequently but still run regularly along the route.

Onboard experience & services

Regional trains on this route are fairly simple, with open seating and overhead racks for luggage. For a journey of around an hour, they’re perfectly comfortable. One of the reasons I like taking regional trains is the slower pace. You simply find a seat and watch the landscape gradually change as the train moves through the hills toward Tuscany.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Regional trains are usually the cheapest option for traveling between Bologna and Florence, with tickets typically costing €9.70 to €13. High-speed trains are faster but more expensive, usually ranging between €22 and €35 depending on the time and availability. If you’re planning to take a high-speed train, it’s often worth booking in advance to secure a lower price. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:

Top tips & recommendations

  • Regional trains are slower but often cheaper.
  • High-speed trains are the best option if you are short on time.
  • Arrive early at Bologna Centrale to check your platform.
  • Window seats offer the best views crossing the Apennines.
  • Bus line C4 is a convenient way to reach San Frediano from the station.

Conclusion

Traveling from Bologna to Florence by train is one of the easiest rail journeys in Italy. With frequent departures and several types of trains available, it’s a very flexible route. Choosing a regional train takes a bit longer, but it also turns the trip into a scenic ride through the hills before arriving in the heart of Florence.

Although the train arrived around eight minutes late, my train journey was very pleasant overall. I had plenty of legroom, the carriage was quiet and clean, and the seat was comfortable. The train temperature was pleasant, the windows were clean and the announcements were clearly understandable. Unfortunately, the wifi did not work well; the connection was often interrupted. The power socket worked, so I was able to charge my mobile phone.

The journey went pretty well. Everything was clean, the reservation worked and the connection was direct. I was able to sit back and just enjoy the journey. Only the loudspeakers were annoying, especially because announcements came on in a continuous loop, which at some point nobody needs anymore. A small damper, but no drama. You would have had to bring your own food and drink, but that wasn't a problem for me. I was satisfied in the end and that's what counts. The value for money was definitely right!

In my opinion, the positive aspects include the hygiene, the punctuality, the helpfulness of the staff and not forgetting the excellent wifi. Unfortunately, the fact that there was not much space on the train due to the large number of passengers was not quite as pleasant for me. Otherwise, I can classify the price as customer-friendly. Overall, I give it 4 stars. I recommend the journey.

IconAge of the train
Personally, I'm a big fan of travelling by train in Italy, as the trains have mostly been on time so far, as they were this time too, and you can simply rely on the information. The trains are equipped with the necessary amenities, but are a bit older and the seats are therefore a bit hard. Apart from that, you definitely can't complain, because the prices are also great! In my experience, I can only recommend the journey!

In my opinion, the positive points of the journey definitely include the fact that the train was very punctual and hygienic. I also noticed that the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend buying your ticket online to avoid problems later on. Overall, I give the trip a full five stars and recommend it.

There were power sockets and wifi on the train, and you could use the wifi throughout. The seats were comfortable and there were plenty of storage options on the train. Service was very diligent and helpful. The toilets were clean and there was no rubbish lying around. The train was punctual and I arrived on time and the price performance is also top!

The train had no wifi, but there were power sockets. The seats were comfortable and you could stretch your legs. The hygiene was not so good because the toilets were completely dirty. The staff were also unfriendly and you couldn't buy food there. The price of the ticket is justified.

I definitely think that the journey definitely deserves 5 stars. It was very clean and the toilets were very hygienic. What also struck me was the calmness of the other passengers. There was good wifi and stable reception. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. To cut a long story short, I give the journey 5 stars and recommend it to others.

Exploring the Wonders of Florence: A Journey Through Art and Architecture

The Florence Cathedral, or Duomo di Firenze, is a stunning masterpiece of Gothic architecture that took over 140 years to complete. Its iconic dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the early 15th century, not only revolutionized engineering but also symbolizes the city’s artistic and cultural zenith during the Renaissance. As you stand beneath its magnificent frescoed ceiling and gaze up at its intricate details, you'll feel transported back to an era where art flourished like never before.

Next on our journey is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most renowned art museums in the world that houses an unparalleled collection of masterpieces from artists such as Botticelli and Michelangelo. Established in 1584 as a government office building (hence "Uffizi," meaning offices), it has since become a treasure trove for art lovers seeking to understand Italy's rich history through visual storytelling. The gallery's unique layout allows visitors to experience artworks chronologically while enjoying breathtaking views of Florence from its windows.

Finally, we arrive at Ponte Vecchio—the oldest bridge still standing across the Arno River—famous for its charming shops built along both sides which date back centuries. Originally home to butcher shops selling meat products until they were replaced by goldsmiths and jewelers due to their more pleasant aromas! This vibrant marketplace offers not just beautiful craftsmanship but also picturesque views perfect for capturing memories against this historic backdrop—a true testament to Florentine resilience throughout time.
