Frequent trains link Bari, a port city in the south-eastern Italian region of Puglia, with the capital, Rome. It’s a pleasant journey by train, and it certainly beats flying or taking a bus. Let’s take a look at the Bari to Rome train service and the most important things to know before booking your ticket.

The Bari to Rome Frecciargento train
Most trains from Bari to Rome are operated by Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company, although the private high-speed company Italo also runs a few services.
Trenitalia runs several types of trains between Bari and Rome, including InterCity, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa.
The distance by rail from Bari to Rome is 480 kilometers (298 miles), with trains taking around 4 hours and 30 minutes. InterCity trains are slower and can take 2 hours longer.
I booked my Bari to Rome train on Omio, which was very easy to do. What I like about Omio is that it lets me compare all options in one search, including trains from Trenitalia and the private operator Italo.
Trains from Bari to Rome depart from Bari Centrale, the city’s central railway station. From most city center hotels, it’s within walking distance. Bari Centrale has cafés and a small supermarket if you want a drink or snack before departure. When it’s time to catch your train, simply check the departure board to see which platform your train departs from.
Trains from Bari arrive at Roma Termini, Rome’s main railway station. It’s a large station with many shops and facilities. To leave the platform, you will need to scan the QR code on your ticket, so have it ready when you arrive. Roma Termini has excellent public transport connections to destinations across Rome. Alternatively, you can find official taxis in front of the station.
There are around eight direct trains between Bari and Rome, including Trenitalia’s InterCity, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa. In addition to night train services, there are also Italo high-speed services on this route.
Although Frecciargento trains are a step down compared to Frecciarossa and Italo, they are still very comfortable and of high quality. Second class is in a 2+2 configuration, while first class has a more spacious 2+1 layout with slightly wider and more comfortable seats.
I was seated in first class, where some snacks and drinks were also included in the fare. All passengers can visit the café-bar coach, where more snacks and drinks are available. Tickets for the Bari to Rome train include a seat reservation. At each seat, you can find a power socket. High-speed trains like the Frecciargento also come with Wi-Fi. The first part of the journey runs along the Adriatic Sea. At Foggia, the train turns inland across the Apennine Mountains, stopping at Benevento and Caserta before joining the Naples–Rome high-speed line to Termini.
For the Frecciargento train from Bari to Rome, I booked about a month before and paid €55 for a first-class ticket. In Italy, tickets for long-distance trains are generally cheaper when booked in advance. Booking ahead is especially important during the high summer season or around national holidays, as trains can sell out and prices increase closer to departure.
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €55 |
| Food & drinks | €2.5 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 57.5 |
Taking the train from Bari to Rome is a highly pleasant experience. If you choose one of Trenitalia’s Frecciargento or Frecciarossa high-speed trains, or the high-speed trains of rival operator Italo, you can expect a fast and comfortable journey, with some scenic views of the beautiful Italian landscape.
I highly recommend taking the train rather than flying or taking a bus if you need to travel from Bari to Rome. Just be sure to book your ticket in advance, especially if you are traveling in the high summer season.
