The Bari to Lecce train is a scenic journey through Puglia. I took this train journey when I was traveling around Southern Italy, and found it both comfortable and efficient. Here’s all you need to know, from booking tickets to what to expect on board.

Train on the platform at Bari Centrale
It’s around 150 km (93 miles) between Bari and Lecce. Bari is above the “heel” of Italy, while Lecce sits to the southeast. I began my trip at Bari Centrale, and 1 hour and 25 minutes later, I arrived at Lecce Stazione. The trains from Bari to Lecce are run by Frecciarossa and often start in Rome.
I booked my Bari to Lecce train ticket on Omio a week before departure. As I was taking a few trains in Italy, I used the app to have my tickets all in one place. I paid €19 for my ticket, but it could have been a little cheaper if I’d booked further in advance.
The train to Lecce leaves from Bari Centrale. The train station sits to the south of central Bari, so depending on where you’re staying, you could walk. There’s also the Bari metropolitan railway service, a commuter train in the city, which connects some parts of the city. I walked to the station since I was staying close by. Bari Centrale is a vital connection point for the region of Puglia and the port of Bari. There are a few bars and small shops here, although I’d recommend purchasing food and drink beforehand.
The train from Bari arrives at Lecce Stazione. This is a smaller terminus station. It’s around a mile (1.5 km) from the Centro Storico, where most of the hotels are located. I was staying nearby, so I walked. There are also plenty of taxis outside the station, which take around six minutes.
There are around 32 trains every day connecting Bari and Lecce. The first train leaves Bari Centrale just after 5:00 am, arriving just before 6:30 am. The last train leaves just after 11 pm, arriving in Lecce before 12:30 am. I took a train at around 10 am and arrived in Lecce in time for lunch.
On the train from Bari to Lecce, I had a fixed table, and there was plenty of legroom. Restrooms and luggage racks were at each end, and the carriage was well air-conditioned. There was Wi-Fi, which worked when we were close to the cities. There were also plug outlets between seats. The journey itself was nice, with a window seat that made it even better.
I paid €19 for this journey by train from Bari to Lecce. I think it could have been a little cheaper if I’d booked further in advance.
