I took an early morning regional train to travel from Bari to Taranto. The regional train was modern and fully air-conditioned, with seats arranged either two abreast or in bays of four. As regional trains don’t have seat reservations, you can take any empty seat you like. There are power sockets at some seats, though the train has no Wi-Fi. Of course, there are toilets on board the train. Overall, I thought the train was perfectly comfortable.
I booked my ticket the evening before travel and paid €10.60 for a seat in second class. Regional train tickets in Italy have a fixed price and cannot sell out, so it doesn’t matter whether you buy your tickets weeks ahead or on the day of travel. However, InterCity ticket prices are variable and generally cheaper if booked in advance. For a short journey like Bari to Taranto, the differences are negligible.
