By taking a bus in Denmark, you can explore these roads, benefit from the country’s advanced public transport, and get where you need to go without spending a fortune. Book your Danish bus ticket with Omio and you’ll save even more.

Denmark by Bus—Book Danish Buses with Omio

Swedes, Norwegians, and Germans are the most frequent visitors to Denmark, but the country attracts tourists from all over the world. It’s the oldest kingdom in Europe and it’s often labelled as the “fairytale country”, as it’s the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson, creator of The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, and The Ugly Duckling, to name just a few.

Booking your Danish bus ticket through Omio couldn’t be easier. We designed our software with simplicity in mind, ensuring that you can book quickly and easily even if you’re not very technically minded and this is the first time you’re making an online booking.

To get started, use our search feature at the top of every page.

You will see a few different inputs:

  • From: Are you starting from a city or a bus station? If it’s the former, you will be shown options from a range of Danish bus stations. If it’s the latter, all of the cheap bus tickets you see will be from that particular station.
  • To: Where are you going? Again, you can be specific and enter a station or general and enter a city.
  • Date: These are your travel dates, specifically the date that you’re leaving. You can buy cheap bus tickets for buses that depart in just a few minutes as well as ones that won’t depart for many months.
  • Return: If you’re arranging an alternative route back, you won’t need a return. If you’re coming back the same way, click this option and choose your preferred return date.
  • Number of tickets: Are you traveling alone or with others? Choose the total number of travelers, being sure to include their ages.
  • Discounts: After selecting the ages of yourself and your fellow travelers, you can add discount cards. These aren’t available for all routes, but there are occasional savings to be made, especially for children and seniors.
  • Accommodation: Do you need to book a stay in a hotel, hostel, or bed & breakfast? If so, leave the “find my accommodation” button checked and we’ll show you the best options from our partners.

All of the above information is changeable and it takes just a couple of clicks. So, if your travel dates and locations are not set in stone, just play around and see if anything inspires you.

After finding your preferred route, just click, book, and wait for your journey. Main bus companies in Denmark

Intercity buses in Denmark are managed by companies based outside the country, including Vy Bus4You and FlixBus.

Vy Bus4You is based over the border in Sweden, but it services many routes inside Denmark and also connects to Sweden and Norway. It’s run by Vy Buss, which in turn is run by Vy, which used to go by the name NSB or Norwegian State Railways.

FlixBus is a German company that runs into and out of many countries, including Denmark. It has been steadily growing its presence in Scandinavia over the last few years and even acquired Swebus in 2018, before rebranding all of its buses, taking over its routes, and then shutting the company down.

You can book Danish bus tickets with these two companies and many others using Omio. Search for your preferred routes, see which bus ticket options appear, and then purchase your preferred route.

Domestic Bus Routes in Denmark

Public transportation in Denmark is very efficient and there are roads and rails crisscrossing the whole of the country. Buses provide travelers with a convenient, eco-friendly, and cheap way to get around, and as most routes take a few hours at the most, it’s also fairly quick.

Billund to Copenhagen is one of the most popular intercity Danish bus routes. It connects these two cities (both of which have airports) in about 3.5 hours. Billund is also where LEGO was invented and there is a LEGOLAND here, so if you’re a fan of these creative and colorful toys, you can fly into Billund, get your fill of LEGO, and then book a cheap bus ticket for the Danish capital.

The reverse is just as easy, and you can get from Copenhagen to Billund on a couple of different daily routes from FlixBus.

If you’re looking for a cheap bus ticket in Denmark, stick with Omio. We can help you to search through all available options and our software will automatically compare them, helping you to travel for less money and less hassle. Enter your desired route into our search engine or click the links above if one of the aforementioned routes catches your eye.

International Bus Routes from Denmark to other countries

What’s the quickest way from Copenhagen to London? If you answered “plane”, you’re probably right, unless you have a rocketship handy. But what about the most interesting way? A flight is just a hop over the North Sea—not much to see there. A bus, on the other hand, will take you into Germany and France, giving you a chance to explore some beautiful scenery and potentially add another country to your travel journal.

It can also be a cheaper option. The price varies based on when you book, but for the dates that we checked, it was 50% cheaper than the flight.

The Copenhagen to London bus route is offered by FlixBus. It’s indirect, as it connects through Frankfurt, but the journey usually commences the following day, so you can spend a night in Frankfurt.

Admittedly, it’s not the most practical way to travel and once you consider the cost of accommodation in Frankfurt, it’ll probably cost you more than a flight in the long run. But it gives you an idea of just how far you can travel from Denmark by bus.

Copenhagen to Amsterdam is another long-distance route that crosses a couple of borders. This one is often available for even less than the London route and it’s also available from FlixBus, but it usually requires a transfer in Germany.

If you’d prefer something direct, FlixBus and Vy Bus4You can take you from Copenhagen to Oslo in around 8 hours. There are multiple buses departing for this route every day and it’s a super cheap way to travel between these two Nordic capitals.

Copenhagen to Paris is direct as well, but you’ll be on the bus for over 20 hours.

Other Danish bus connections that begin in Copenhagen and take you across international borders include Copenhagen to Stockholm and Copenhagen to Berlin. The former is a direct route that takes around 10 hours. It is a FlixBus route and you can book it in the morning so that you arrive in the evening or book a night-time route to awake just in time to watch the Swedish capital come to life.

Generally speaking, although Denmark seems to be a little awkwardly placed, it has a fantastic road network and some huge bridges, so it can connect to its Nordic neighbors or cut through Germany to access more of mainland Europe.

To book a seat on a bus in Denmark or a bus out of Denmark, stick with Omio. You can search for your own routes and see what you find or click one of the above links to learn more about dates, times, prices, and everything else you need to know.

Night Buses in Denmark

Night buses take over from daytime routes in major cities like Copenhagen. They run the same routes, but they are only available for several hours after midnight. In Copenhagen, the night buses begin at 1 am and run until 5 am.

If you’re taking a night bus from providers like FlixBus, it likely means that it will drive through the night on a long-distance journey. These buses make fewer stops during the night and the roads are not as busy, so they are usually quicker.

Bus travel tips for Denmark

When boarding a regional bus in Copenhagen, you enter the bus from the doors at the front. This isn’t true for all regions in the country though, as buses are boarded from the back in Aarhus.

You can wait for the bus and find schedule information at the country’s many bus stops, and this is also where you need to wait for the bus to collect you.

If you’re using an intercity bus, you will likely need to board from a bus station. These are dotted around the country. They’re usually centrally located and within close proximity to the city’s train station and major hotels.

Intercity route information will be shown on the booking screen when you buy your cheap bus ticket through Omio, and you’ll also find it on the bus ticket itself.

Intercity buses are available direct and with transfers. If you book the former, you can stay on the bus as it drives to your destination. It may stop for breaks and even to pick up passengers but you don’t need to worry about changing buses.

As for regional buses, many of them will only stop when you hit the button. So, check the timetable and if the bus passes somewhere you need to go, just push the “Stop” button before it gets to the bus stop.

FAQs

Can I use the toilets on a bus in Denmark?

It depends on the type of bus that you’re using. Regional buses tend not to have toilets. But there are public toilets to use in most towns and cities, as well as in train stations and bus stations. If you’re using intercity buses, there should be a toilet on board. These buses are built for comfort and convenience over long distances, so they will typically have everything that you need.

Do buses in Denmark have Wi-Fi?

There is Wi-Fi available on intercity buses in Denmark, but you might not find it on regional bus routes. However, depending on where you are in the country, you may still have access to free Wi-Fi. Copenhagen, for instance, is a well-connected city and you can find free Wi-Fi in most cafes, restaurants, hotels, and other public spaces.

Is Denmark transportation good?

Yes, it is very efficient and reliable, especially in cities like Copenhagen, where you will find some of the best public transport in the world. One travel pass for this transportation network will give you access to all public transport options in the city, including trams, trains, metro, and buses.

Do you tip the bus driver in Denmark?

Tipping is not customary in Denmark. Many diners will round up the bill at restaurants, but you generally don’t tip the bus driver. Of course, you can if you want to—they would certainly appreciate it.

Should I greet the bus driver?

Yes, it is polite to greet the bus driver when you step on the bus and thank them for the journey at the end. It’s not always a done thing in Denmark, but it doesn’t hurt to show them your appreciation. “Hello” in Danish is “hej”, but it’s pronounced “hi”, so it’s an easy one to remember. “Thank you” is also easy as it’s “tak”—pronounced “tack”.

Can I use Dollars or Euros in Denmark?

You might find shops that accept Euros and Dollars in airports, but you generally can’t use them elsewhere. If you want to use cash, you will need to exchange some krone. Check bus stations and train stations for foreign exchanges or use the ATMs. You can also use credit cards and debit cards in most locations.

What is the most popular form of transportation in Denmark?

Buses are popular in Denmark, and the metro system in Copenhagen also has a very high ridership. Most Danes own bicycles and they use these to get around every day. You can join them by renting a bike when you are in the city. You can even take your bike onto the country’s buses. Look out for bike rental shops, which should be scattered around the city and include Rosenborg Cykler, Baisikeli, and Bike Tours Copenhagen in the capital.

Where can I buy a Danish bus ticket?

You can buy a cheap bus ticket in Denmark right here on Omio. We sell tickets for many intercity routes inside the country and to big cities across its borders. If you’re taking one of the regional buses for a short route, you can buy your bus tickets from kiosks and ticket machines at bus stations and train stations. In Copenhagen, the tickets apply across the public transportation network, so your bus ticket will also give you access to the metro and trains.

Does Denmark still accept cash?

Denmark is not as cashless as some of its Nordic neighbors, but there are some shops that only accept credit card or debit card payments. To make sure you are covered for all eventualities, we recommend changing some cash when you arrive and then preparing your credit card for most payments. Check currency conversion fees so you’re not stung with excessive charges every time you use your card.

Main Bus Stations in Denmark

There are centrally-located bus stations in most towns and cities in Denmark. They are usually small and provide only the most basic amenities, but their handy location means you have easy access to shops, cafes, restaurants, and other essentials. There are also many bus stops scattered across the country. Most of these are used by the country’s regional trains, but some are also used by FlixBus.
