Traveling from Milan to Genoa by train always feels like watching northern Italy slowly change character. Milan’s fast pace and modern skyline gradually give way to hills, tunnels, and finally the unmistakable feeling of being close to the sea. It’s not a long journey but it’s definitely worth it as well as the best way to visit the city or to reach the Cinque Terre.

The characteristic alleys of Genoa from below.
The train from Milan to Genoa takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the service, covering approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles). Most trains depart from Milano Centrale and arrive at Genova Piazza Principe (the main station of Genoa) or Genova Brignole.
I booked on Omio my Milan to Genoa train because I wanted a quick overview of all available options without opening multiple railway websites. I especially liked being able to compare high-speed and regional trains in one place. Since this route has many daily departures and types of trains, I could easily choose the right match for my plans.
Milano Centrale is a large station: huge halls, marble everywhere, travelers rushing in every direction. I arrived early, bought coffee and something sweet for the journey, and found my platform surprisingly quickly despite the station’s size.
Arriving in Genoa is completely different. The atmosphere immediately slows down, the air changes (I swear you can “feel” the sea!), and within minutes you start noticing this port city's characteristics: old buildings, narrow streets, and glimpses of the sea between them.
This is a busy route: there are frequent departures throughout the day, usually at least every hour, with both direct and faster high-speed options available.
I chose a Regionale Trenitalia train, the slowest but cheapest one. The ride itself was comfortable and unexpectedly scenic. As the train moved south, the landscape gradually became greener and I ended up spending most of the journey looking outside the window.
My ticket cost around €18, while prices generally range between €12 and €40 depending on train type and booking time.
