Prague to Vienna by trainPrague to Vienna in Ultra Luxury Onboard Railjet Business Class
By Simon Andersen
Prague and Vienna are two of Europe’s most stunning cities, renowned for their vibrant culture and historic charm. Luckily, the modern and fast Railjet train connects the cities in just over 4 hours, with train tickets starting from just €14.99. In this article, I’ll take you through the full experience and share tips for traveling from Prague to Vienna by train in comfort and even ultra luxury!

Beautiful wooded countryside
Route overview
The train from Prague to Vienna travels past several major Czech cities, like Pardubice and Brno, before crossing into Austria. The total journey covers 406 km in just over 4 hours. Most trains are jointly operated by České dráhy (CD) and ÖBB (Austrian Railways), though RegioJet also offers direct trains on this route. While flights and buses are available, the mix of comfort, speed, and amenities onboard the train makes it my preferred choice. On Omio, you can compare train, flight and bus options, making it a great way to get an overview of all the options.
Transportation experience
Taking the train was incredibly easy: just show up at the station and board before the doors close (about a minute before departure). Settle into your seat, and you’re off! The ride was smooth, with minimal vibration. Thanks to free Wi-Fi and an onboard restaurant car, the time flew by. Before I knew it, we arrived at Wien Hauptbahnhof, just a short metro ride away from Vienna’s city center. Overall, it was by far the most convenient and relaxing way to travel between the two cities.
Departure station
Praha Hlavní Nádraží (Prague Main Station) Located just 10–15 minutes by foot from the Old Town and well-connected by metro and tram, makes it very convenient. The old station building is a hidden gem, with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and the station's best café. Don’t miss it!
Arrival station
Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Main Station) Opened in 2014, this modern station lies just south of the city center and is served by metro and trams. It’s spacious, easy to navigate and packed with shops, cafés, and onward connections. It's the ideal arrival spot for Vienna.
Schedule & frequency
Railjet (CD/ÖBB): Up to 9 daily departures, roughly every 2 hours RegioJet: 4 daily trains Railjet and Regiojet trains both take the route via Brno to Wien Hauptbahnhof Two daily slower alternatives via České Velenice to Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, which are less popular but great alternatives if the main services are sold out or too expensive.
Onboard experience & services
I traveled on Railjet RJ 79, departing Prague at 12:12 and arriving in Vienna after 4h 9m. The train was one of CD’s blue Railjets. The interior is nearly identical to the red ÖBB version, though the Austrian sets offer more seats in Business Class. All Railjet trains have: Free Wi-Fi Power outlets Comfortable seating in all classes An onboard restaurant with food, snacks, and beer on tap Classes of Travel Economy Class From €14.99 - Comfortable seating in airline-style rows or around a table. Great for budget travelers. First Class From €29.99 - Stylish leather seats, more space, and solo/2-person table seating, ideal for solo travelers or couples. Often only €10–20 more than economy, so it's definitely worth considering! Business Class €15 upgrade on any First Class ticket gets you reclining leather armchairs, extra space, and complimentary drinks served at your seat. There are only 6 Business Class seats on CD (blue Railjets), so book early or pick a service with ÖBB (red Railjet) for better availability. Scenery and Relaxed Ride The route isn’t the most scenic overall, but the stretch before Brno, through the Moravian Karst National Park, offers some lovely hill views. Otherwise, the ride is smooth and peaceful, with plenty to keep you entertained, be it the dining car, browsing online, or napping in comfort. For a closer look at the train and journey, check out the short I made about showcasing the large business class seats, the beautiful station in Prague, and the beautiful autumn scenery as the train approaches Brno. Check out my video for more info: The Luxurious Business Class Experience The Business Class seats and service were the highlight of my journey, featuring lots of legroom, soft padding and a huge amount of recline. The onboard host will take great care of you, offering: A welcome drink. A 50 CZK voucher for the dining car or trolley. Seat-side meal service delivered directly to your seat from the restaurant car. It felt like flying First Class for just €15 extra, an absolute treat if you're celebrating or just want to indulge.
