La Spezia is a busy modern port city with an ancient maritime heritage. It is the gateway to the Cinque Terre, as well as a beautiful seaside town in its own right, with pastel-colored houses clinging to the harbor over glistening turquoise water. The city has ancient origins, known as a settlement during Roman times. However, the city center is largely new, with modern structures mixing together with 19th-century buildings. La Spezia is served by an excellent modern transport network. Within the city, buses are the best way to get around. The journey from the city center to the train station is very easy by bus or on foot.
The easiest way to travel to La Spezia Centrale train station from La Spezia city center is on foot. Starting from the La Spezia Ferry Terminal and Mirabello Port, walk through the public gardens and cross Via Domenico Chiodo onto Via del Prione, which turns into Via Fiume after Viale Giuseppe Garibaldi. Continue on Via Fiume until Piazza Saint Bon, then take the second right at the roundabout onto Via Pietro Paleocapa. Follow this for 300 feet (100 meters) until the main entrance of the station, just past the Centrostazione car park and just before Piazza Caduti del Lavoro. Coming from the old town ("Centro Storico"), follow the same directions from Via del Prione. Coming from the container port and modern Migliarina district, first take Viale Italia all the way down until the public gardens opposite the ferry terminal. For travelers with reduced mobility or those who prefer not to walk, taking the bus is also an option. From Chiodo Portici bus stop, located at the entrance to the public gardens just outside the old town, the number 3, 12, 19, C, L, and S bus routes run directly to the train station.
