After a few easy mornings by the beach and afternoons wandering Tarragona’s Roman ruins, it was time to swap the Costa Daurada for the warmth of southern Spain. I decided to travel to Málaga María Zambrano by train with Renfe's AVE train service, a straightforward option that made the long distance feel like it was just next door. Here’s what the trip from Tarragona to Málaga by train was like and what to expect if you plan to take the same route.
The route from Tarragona to Málaga covers about 770 km, connecting Spain’s northeast coast with the heart of Andalusia in just under 6 hours on a direct train. The main operators on this route are Renfe, with its high-speed AVE service, and Iryo, a private high-speed train jointly owned by Trenitalia, the Italian state rail company. Some services include a transfer, but I chose the direct AVE train for simplicity. You can also fly from Tarragona to Málaga in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, but I prefer the relaxed pace and comfort of high-speed rail.
About two weeks before my trip, I booked my Tarragona to Málaga train ticket on Omio. I chose a seat with Renfe AVE, knowing their trains are modern and comfortable. Using Omio’s filters made it easy to compare schedules and fares until I found a direct high-speed service that suited my plans. Checkout was quick, and I paid with my debit card before receiving my e-ticket instantly in the app and by email. I always prefer a digital ticket because it saves paper and helps the environment. I didn’t seriously consider taking the bus from Tarragona to Málaga, which takes around 14 hours, even though departures are frequent. For long journeys like this, Renfe’s AVE train is by far the most comfortable and efficient option.
Renfe AVE trains to Málaga depart from Tarragona Station (Camp Tarragona). The station is an important hub for both local and regional services, particularly to and from Barcelona. It’s compact and located right near the sea, only a few minutes from the old town. Since my hotel was in the city center, I stopped by Jardí Café next to my accommodation for a light breakfast with coffee, orange juice, and a bagel for €12.40 before heading to the station. There are some cafés at the station, but I really enjoyed the food at Jardí the day before. You’ll also find a few convenience stores at the terminal if you need a snack or water before departure. I arrived about 40 minutes early, which gave me enough time to find my platform and get settled. Security and boarding were straightforward, and I only needed to show my ID or passport and ticket for a quick scan.
Arriving at Málaga María Zambrano always feels like stepping into summer. The station is modern, bright, and well connected to the Cercanías local trains and Metro Line 1, making it easy to reach central spots like Soho or the port area. It’s the city’s main transport interchange and one of Andalusia’s key rail hubs. There’s also a large shopping center (Vialia) attached, perfect for grabbing food or essentials before heading to your accommodation. My hotel was within a 15-minute walk from the station, so I traveled onward on foot.
There are several Tarragona to Málaga trains running daily, starting around 6:24 AM and continuing until the last departure at 4:34 PM. The main operators providing high-speed service on this route are Renfe’s AVE trains and Iryo. Between the two, there are usually 10 to 12 departures per day. Direct trains take just under 6 hours, while routes with transfers can take an hour or two longer. My 9:05 AM direct train with Renfe AVE departed and arrived on time. The timing was perfect, letting me enjoy breakfast in Tarragona and still arrive in Málaga before sunset.
Everything about boarding the train from Tarragona to Málaga was easy and efficient. The train felt calm and comfortable from the start. By 9 AM, I was in my window seat on the left-hand side, ready for a smooth ride south. The view outside changed constantly, from the green hills of Catalonia to the warm Andalusian scenery before reaching Málaga. I spent part of the trip listening to an audiobook and just watching the landscape roll by. About halfway through, I grabbed a bottle of water from the bar cart for €1.50, which was convenient. There was a cafeteria on board, but I was tucked in with snacks from the hotel and didn’t feel like buying anything else. Renfe AVE trains to Málaga have restrooms available, which is a must on nearly six-hour trips. They were clean and stocked throughout the journey. The Renfe AVE coaches feature comfortable reclining seats, fold-down trays, footrests, and individual power outlets. Overhead luggage racks easily fit my laptop case and carry-on backpack. I had a larger soft suitcase that I stored in the luggage rack at the end of the car. After scanning the code on your ticket, you can log in to Renfe’s entertainment portal. The Wi-Fi through the PlayRenfe network was fast and stable, more than good enough for streaming music or checking messages. There were plenty of entertainment options available in Spanish and English. The staff on board were professional and friendly, and announcements were clear in both languages. Overall, the cabin stayed pretty quiet, which made it easy to read and get some work done before arriving in Málaga.
Booking on Omio made comparing options simple. I could see both direct and one-transfer routes. Prices fluctuate depending on class and timing, so it’s worth booking early. I only booked my Tarragona to Málaga train tickets about two weeks in advance, but I’d recommend at least four weeks ahead if you can.
