If you’re planning a city break in Naples, visiting Pompei at the same time is pretty much a requirement. The Circumvesuviana train runs from Napoli Centrale to Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri and takes around 40 minutes each way. Trains also stop at Pompei Santuario. I did this while I was in Naples as an easy day trip. Here’s how you can do it too!

The main building at Pompei station
The distance between Naples and Pompei is around 15 miles (24 km). Compared to Italy’s long-distance trains, it is quite slow, and delays are fairly common. Trains depart from Napoli Centrale, the main station in Naples, and take around 30-40 minutes. These are busy commuter trains, and they run frequently throughout the day. Notably, the line runs around the base of Mount Vesuvius, and I loved the views to the summit of the volcano!
For my journey from Naples to Pompei by train, I booked my tickets the day before using the Omio app. While it’s not necessary to book in advance, I found it useful to have my tickets accessible as e-tickets on my phone. The conductor just needed to scan the QR code to verify the ticket.
Napoli Centrale is located close to Piazza Garibaldi. You can take the metro from here to Duomo station, which is in Centro Storico. I was staying halfway between Centro Storico and the station, so I walked, which took me ten minutes. Taxis are available throughout the city, which will also take about ten minutes.
Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri is right outside the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. It’s a small station, only served by regional trains, but it does have a small restaurant and a tourist office attached.
There is a train every 20 to 30 minutes between Naples and Pompei, with around 35 services departing each day. The first train leaves at around 5:35 am, and the last train departs after 10 pm. The journey takes from 27 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of stops. I took the train at 10:40 am, just after the rush hour had finished.
Italian regional trains can be basic, but I found the journey comfortable. It wasn’t too busy, and I easily found a seat, although there were no reservations. I was glad to have a window seat, which meant I could watch Mount Vesuvius as we passed. I was glad I didn’t carry a lot of luggage, as there wasn’t much storage space on board. There was also no Wi-Fi or toilets available.
For my recent trip from Naples to Pompei by train, I paid a low fare of €3.50. Generally, these tickets are at a fixed price and do not rise closer to the date of departure.

The Amphitheater of Pompeii, built around 80 BCE, is one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheaters and a remarkable testament to ancient engineering. Its significance lies in its capacity to host up to 20,000 spectators for gladiatorial games and other public events, showcasing the social dynamics and entertainment culture of Pompeii before the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Unique features include its elliptical shape that enhances acoustics and visibility as well as intricate frescoes depicting scenes from mythology found within.
Next on our journey is the Villa of the Mysteries, an extraordinary villa located just outside Pompeii's city walls that dates back to approximately 100 BCE. This site holds immense significance due to its stunning wall paintings which are believed to depict initiation rites into a mystery cult dedicated to Dionysus—offering insights into religious practices during this era. What sets it apart are these vivid frescoes featuring life-sized figures engaged in dramatic poses against vibrant backgrounds; they provide us with a glimpse into both artistic mastery and cultural beliefs prevalent at that time.
Finally, we arrive at the Forum of Pompeii—the bustling heart of civic life where politics, commerce, religion, and social interaction converged over centuries until disaster struck in AD 79. The Forum’s importance cannot be overstated; it served not only as a marketplace but also housed temples like those dedicated to Jupiter and Apollo—a reflection of Roman societal values centered around community engagement. Among its unique features are remnants such as stone benches for citizens’ gatherings or inscriptions carved onto marble slabs detailing laws or decrees—each telling stories about daily life in this once-thriving metropolis.
