The buried Roman city of Pompei is one of Italy's must-see attractions, and its proximity to Naples makes it a popular day trip. If you're planning a visit, frequent Circumvesuviana trains from Pompei to Naples make it simple and quick, with a journey time of under 40 minutes. Here's all you need to know about booking your trip and the experience on board.

The archaeological site of Pompei
The Circumvesuviana line runs directly between Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri and Napoli Piazza Garibaldi stations, covering a distance of 15 miles (24 km). The Pompei to Naples train typically takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the service you choose and the number of stops. Trains can be busy, but the view of Mount Vesuvius along the way was one of the highlights for me.
The Circumvesuviana is a popular commuter service, with frequent departures. It's not always necessary to book tickets in advance, but I booked mine the day before using the Omio app to avoid having to queue up at the station. Tickets are saved on your phone, ready for the conductor to scan, so you don't need to worry about printing them out.
Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri is conveniently located just outside the Pompei archaeological site. It's a fairly small station with just two platforms, one for each direction. You should have no problem finding where to go, although it can be crowded during peak times. The station has an information desk, customer toilets and a small shop with drinks.
Circumvesuviana trains arrive at Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station, located underneath the main Napoli Centrale railway station. From here, you can connect to buses, the Metro (I used Line 1 to reach my hotel in the port area) and high-speed trains to destinations across Italy. You'll also find plenty of shops and cafés in Napoli Centrale, plus toilets and left luggage facilities.
One of the biggest advantages of the Pompei to Naples train is how often services run. Trains operate over 35 times a day. That's roughly every 20 to 30 minutes from 5.30 am to 10.20 pm, which means you can be very flexible. I took a 6.20 pm train back to Naples so that I could stay at Pompei for sunset and experience the ruins without the crowds.
Circumvesuviana trains are local commuter services, which are functional but basic. So, don’t expect any extra frills, like buffet cars or air conditioning. Carriages can get crowded, especially during peak hours in the morning and late afternoon, so you're not guaranteed a seat. That said, the journey time is short, and the trains are generally efficient.
Tickets for the Circumvesuviana are inexpensive and have a fixed price, so you don't need to book too far in advance. I paid just €4 for my one-way train ticket, from Pompei to Naples, through the Omio app.
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €4 |
| Food & drinks | €0 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €1.5 |
| Total | € 5.5 |
The Pompei archaeological site is a real highlight of any trip to Southern Italy, and the Pompei to Naples train is an efficient way to get back to the city after a day exploring the ruins. Frequent services and low fares mean you can be flexible, and Omio's app makes booking simple.
