By Maria Kofou
If you’re exploring Northern Italy, the train from Milan to Verona is one of the most convenient ways to travel between these two iconic cities. The journey takes just over an hour, making it ideal even for a day trip. During my time in Italy, I traveled on a high-speed train and found it smooth and stress-free. Here’s everything you need to know before taking the trip yourself.

A view of the train in transit
High-speed trains, operated by Trenitalia and Italo, run between Milano Centrale and Verona Porta Nuova throughout the day, making this one of the easiest routes to navigate in Northern Italy. If, like me, you love having options, you might consider regional connections operated by Trenord. These are slower, but can be a smart choice if you’re traveling on a budget. The distance is around 160 km. On a high-speed train, the journey is quick. In just over an hour, you’ll already be arriving in Verona. This is exactly the kind of route that makes you rethink distances in Italy and start planning combinations like Verona with Venice or a Lake Garda escape, all within the same trip.
I booked my ticket through Omio a few weeks before departure to secure a convenient time slot. The booking process was quick and easy, and my ticket was available by email and in the Omio app. I simply used the digital ticket when boarding. As the train departed Milan, the scenery gradually shifted from urban surroundings to open countryside, with occasional views of farmland and distant hills as we approached Verona.
Milano Centrale is one of Italy’s main railway hubs. It’s located slightly outside the historic center, but still well connected by metro, buses and taxi. I reached the station using public transport in under 15 minutes. Before arriving, I grabbed a coffee nearby, as prices inside the station tend to be higher. The station itself offers a wide range of shops, cafés and services for travelers. While you’re there, make sure you take some time to appreciate the amazing architecture.
The train arrived at Verona Porta Nuova, the city’s main hub. The station is located about 1.5 km from the historic center. From there, you can either walk (around 20 minutes), take a short bus ride, or grab a taxi to reach key attractions like the Arena di Verona. I chose to walk, which was a pleasant way to ease into the city and start exploring.
There are approximately 40 to 50 trains running daily between Milan and Verona. The first departures are typically around 5:30 am, while the last trains leave close to midnight. Most high-speed services complete the journey in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, while slower regional trains may take closer to 2 hours.
For this journey, I opted for a first-class upgrade, which was only slightly more expensive than standard class. The seating was spacious, arranged comfortably with extra legroom and a quieter atmosphere. There was sufficient luggage space, clean restroom facilities, and a snack and beverage service available during the trip.
My ticket cost €38, including the first-class upgrade. Booking in advance helped secure a better price, as fares for high-speed trains tend to increase closer to the departure date.
