As someone who definitely enjoys crossing Italy by train, the Milan to Naples route felt like a full travel experience rather than just a transfer. Know that whether you're heading south for sunshine, food, or culture, this journey connects two of the most completely different sides of Italy in a smooth and comfortable way. If you're planning your trip, here’s everything you need to know before hopping on a train from Milan to Naples.

The famous Toledo metro stop in Naples.

Route overview

You can travel from Milan to Naples smoothly by train in around 4 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours, covering approximately 770 kilometers (478 miles). High-speed trains like Frecciarossa and Italo make this long-distance journey fast and efficient, departing from Milano Centrale and arriving at Napoli Centrale. This is absolutely the best (and fastest!) way to travel between this two cities if you want to avoid airports and enjoy a more relaxed experience.

Transportation experience

I booked my Milan to Naples train on Omio, and it made comparing options incredibly easy. I chose a mid-morning Frecciarossa to enjoy the incredible scenery along the way. If you're debating between flying and taking the train, in my opinion the train should win: once you factor in airport transfers and waiting times, the total travel time is surprisingly similar, but is just much more comfortable by rail.

Departure station

I really like Milano Centrale: this station is a major departure hub with everything you need before a long journey: cafés, restaurants, shops, and clear Wi-Fi. It can get busy, so arriving at least 30 minutes early is a good idea to find your platform and settle in stress-free.

Arrival station

Napoli Centrale is located close to the city center and you will find it well connected by metro, buses, and taxis. From here, you can quickly reach Naples’ impressive historic center, the waterfront, or even continue on to destinations like Pompeii, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast.

Schedule & frequency

Trains from Milan to Naples run frequently throughout the day, with departures every 30-60 minutes depending on the day. High-speed services take around 4.5 to 5 hours, making it easy to plan your journey at almost any time of day.

Onboard experience & services

On my Frecciarossa train, the seat was spacious and comfortable, with power outlets and Wi-Fi available throughout the journey. For a longer route like this, I’d recommend bringing snacks (you will find plenty of them at Milano Centrale) or grabbing something from the onboard café. Beware: the scenery changes dramatically as you travel south, from northern plains to rolling hills and glimpses of the Italian countryside and sea towns… it’s definitely a journey that will keep you engaged.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Booking early can get you tickets for high speed trains like Trenitalia Frecciarossa starting from around €30-€50, while last-minute fares can be significantly higher. I do not recommend slower trains because the journey would take too many hours.

  • Choose a window seat for the full scenic experience.
  • The journey is long: bring entertainment or download content for the ride.

Conclusion

If you're deciding how to get from Milan to Naples, for me it is a no brainer: the train is one of the smartest choices. It’s fast, comfortable, and lets you experience Italy from north to south without stress. Book your Milan to Naples train with Omio and enjoy the ride: it's part of the adventure!
