Back from the North of Norway, taking the train from Bergen to Oslo was not just a way to travel, it's an experience in itself. Often described as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, this route completely redefines what a train ride can be and made the return to the Capital less bitter.

Route overview

Be prepared: the journey from Bergen to Oslo is long and takes about 6.5 to 7 hours, covering roughly 500 kilometers (310 miles). Trains depart from Bergen Station and arrive at Oslo Central Station.

Transportation experience

Even for the “return trip part” of our honeymoon in Northern Europe we bought our tickets on Omio, and I found it incredibly helpful for comparing departure times and prices in one place while traveling. Given how popular this route is, having a clear overview made it easier to pick the best option without stress.

Departure station

Bergen Station is exactly as you would expect: compact and easy to navigate. We arrived early, grabbed a coffee and a kanelboller, and enjoyed the calm atmosphere before departure.

Arrival station

Oslo Central Station is majestic and, above all, right in the heart of the city, making it easy to continue your journey or start exploring immediately. We loved it!

Schedule & frequency

There are several departures per day, usually spaced every few hours. Again, bear in mind that this is a long train ride so plan your travels carefully.

Onboard experience & services

This is where the train journey from Bergen to Oslo really shines. Wide windows, comfortable seating, and ever-changing landscapes, from fjords to mountains, make it unforgettable. We spent most of our trip simply watching the scenery and adoring it.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

We paid around €60 each, with prices typically ranging between €40 and €120 depending on booking time and seat type. In our opinion it was a good price, considering that the cost of living in Norway is higher than in Italy.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Book early to find the best prices and seats.
  • Choose a window seat, it’s essential for this trip.
  • Bring snacks for the long journey and possibly buy them before leaving at a market or bakery.

Conclusion

The Bergen to Oslo train is more than transport, it’s a highlight of any trip to Norway. Slow, scenic, and unforgettable… and, as I said before, it made the return from the last leg of our honeymoon less sad.

The train journey on the VY 31 from Bergen to Oslo was a real highlight. It is a direct connection that offers beautiful views of Norway in 6 hours and 44 minutes. The seats were comfortable and the train was on time. The on-board service was particularly positive: the food on board was fresh and delicious, with a selection of hot dishes and snacks. There was also free wifi, which made the journey even more enjoyable. A highly recommended route

I found my journey from Bergen to Oslo very good. The train itself was very clean and the toilets looked hygienic. The seats were comfortable, but I lacked some legroom. The staff were very friendly and made clear announcements. There were plenty of power sockets and a stable internet connection. The train was not delayed and I did not have to change trains. There was also a snack machine instead of an on-board bistro, which I found very good.
