If you need to travel from Bari on Italy’s Adriatic coast to Naples on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the train is the best option. I really enjoyed this journey across the spine of Italy and highly recommend it if you need to travel between these cities.
Let’s take a look at what it’s like to travel by train from Bari to Naples!

High-speed Frecciarossa train at Bari Centrale
Direct trains between Bari and Naples are operated by Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company. These direct trains are classic locomotive-hauled InterCity services.
Trenitalia also offers one-stop itineraries from Bari to Naples, involving a Frecciargento or Frecciarossa high-speed train from Bari towards Rome, where you can change at Caserta onto a regional train to Naples.
The Bari to Naples route is 316 kilometers (196 miles), with direct trains taking just over 4 hours. Services via Caserta normally take between 4 and 5 hours.
I booked the Bari to Naples train on Omio. With a single search, you can easily see all available options, including direct trains and one-stop connections. I also appreciate that Omio is transparent about fare conditions, such as whether a ticket is changeable or refundable.
Bari Centrale is the main railway station in Bari, and it’s from here that the trains to Naples depart. The station is centrally located, and you can easily walk there from Bari’s historic center. There are several cafés and even a small supermarket at Bari Centrale if you need a drink or snack before departure. I enjoyed a quick espresso and croissant before my mid-morning train.
Direct trains from Bari arrive at Napoli Centrale. As one of Italy’s busiest stations, it's always bustling with activity. From here, there are good metro and bus connections across the city. The metro station at Napoli Centrale is called Garibaldi.
There are up to two daily InterCity trains from Bari to Naples. As these are direct services, they are the most convenient option.
However, if these InterCity trains don’t suit your schedule, there are also numerous one-stop connections throughout the day, involving a high-speed train to Caserta and a connection there onto a regional train to Naples.
For my journey from Bari to Naples, I took a one-stop connection, as the departure time of the direct InterCity service did not fit my travel plans.
My journey began on a Trenitalia Frecciarossa high-speed train from Bari towards Rome, which I took to Caserta. I was in first class, featuring a spacious 2+1 seating layout, which includes complimentary snacks and drinks. For the first part of the journey, the train runs along the Adriatic Sea before heading inland and crossing the Apennine Mountains. At Caserta, I had a 15-minute connection, which I easily managed to make. This train only has unreserved seating, so take any available seat you like.
Don’t worry if you miss this connection, as you can simply take the next regional train, which departs frequently.
I booked my Bari to Naples train journey about a month in advance and paid €45 for a first-class ticket. Long-distance trains in Italy, including InterCity as well as high-speed Frecciargento and Frecciarossa services, use dynamic pricing, meaning ticket costs fluctuate based on demand. Tickets are generally cheapest when booked well in advance, which is particularly important during the high summer season or around national holidays.

Traveling by train from Bari to Naples is straightforward, with up to two direct InterCity trains connecting the cities. Additional departures are available if you opt for a one-stop itinerary, from Bari to Caserta and then a regional train from Caserta to Naples.
