My Journey from Alicante to Málaga by Train

Introduction

After soaking up the beachy energy of Alicante, it was time to head south toward Málaga, one of my favorite cities in Andalusia. I love traveling around Spain by train because it is reliable, scenic, and much more peaceful than flying. The route from Alicante to Málaga isn’t the fastest, but with Renfe AVE, it is comfortable and well worth the time. Most options include a transfer in Madrid, but I was lucky enough to find a direct train, and I couldn’t pass it up.

Route Overview

The Alicante to Málaga route stretches across nearly 500 km, linking Spain’s southeastern coast with the Costa del Sol. Most connections include a change in Madrid, but occasionally you’ll find a direct service. The direct train route between Alicante and Málaga is a recent addition to Spain’s high-speed rail network, with the direct service launching in June 2024. Renfe AVE trains still pass through Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes to switch onto the southern corridor, but passengers remain on the same train for the entire journey, which is why it is considered “direct.”

Trains usually run from early morning until around 5:00 PM, and the direct one I took departed at 4:35 PM. The journey time was just under 6 hours. Even though it meant arriving later in the evening, skipping the transfer was absolutely worth it. With the smooth onboard experience and the convenience of staying on the same train, I think the direct AVE service is the best way to travel from Alicante to Málaga.

Transportation Experience

I booked my Alicante–Málaga train ticket on Omio, which made it easy to compare all available routes and spot the direct option. I booked a seat on the Renfe AVE service, and the checkout process was simple. I paid by debit card and received my ticket instantly in the app. Since my train wasn’t until late afternoon, I spent my last day in Alicante by the sea and enjoyed a long lunch before heading to the station. You can take the bus from Alicante to Málaga, but with journey times typically between 7 hours and 10 hours 30 minutes, the train was the better option for me.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Station

Renfe AVE trains to Málaga depart from Alicante Terminal. Alicante Terminal is centrally located, so I walked there with my small carry-on and backpack. The station is compact but has a few basic cafés, shops, and kiosks. I grabbed a bottle of water from one of the stands before boarding.

Security was quick, and Renfe staff simply checked my ID and scanned my ticket before I boarded. I arrived about 30 minutes early, which gave me time to find my platform and relax. The station is simple to navigate and easy to reach on foot.

Renfe Seats Views

I arrived in Málaga at Málaga María Zambrano Station. Even late at night, the station felt lively and safe. I took a taxi to my hotel, which cost around €7. The station connects directly to the Vialia shopping center, so if you arrive earlier in the day, there are plenty of places to grab food or pick up groceries, including a supermarket.

Schedule & Frequency

Trains from Alicante to Málaga run several times daily, typically from 5:50 AM to 4:35 PM, with most journeys requiring a change in Madrid. The main train operators on this route are Renfe AVE and Iryo, but direct services are limited. A small number of direct AVE trains now operate this connection, usually 1–2 per day, and they can save up to 2 hours compared to making a transfer.

I took the 4:35 PM direct service, which arrived in Málaga María Zambrano at 10:26 PM, just under 6 hours of travel time. Even though it meant arriving later in the evening, avoiding a transfer made the journey feel smoother and more relaxing. If you want to enjoy a full day in Alicante and still arrive the same night, the 4:35 PM direct service is a good option to look out for.

Onboard Experience & Services

I always choose a window seat for long-distance journeys because it makes the trip feel more peaceful. The train was calm and comfortable, with wide seats that had a bit of recline. You also get folding trays and power outlets for charging devices. The coach remained quiet most of the way, which made it easy to take a quick nap during the ride.

Connecting to the PlayRenfe portal is simple with a quick QR code scan. The Wi-Fi connection was stable enough for browsing and watching YouTube videos on my phone. Renfe’s luggage allowance is generous, allowing up to three pieces totaling 25 kg. For storage, you can place smaller bags in the overhead rack and larger suitcases on the luggage rack at the end of the carriage.

Partway through the journey, I walked to the café car to stretch my legs. I had brought water from the station, so I didn’t buy anything, but they were offering sandwiches, salads, chips, and pastries. For drinks, the menu had hot and ice coffee, tea, and a choice of soft drinks. It’s good to know you can pick up something simple onboard if you need it. As we approached Andalusia, I watched the sunset fade over the hills near Granada. It was the kind of slow, quiet travel moment I love.
