I’ve taken this trip between Zaragoza and Madrid a few times, and it’s one of those routes where taking the train simply makes sense. The distance between the two cities looks bigger on a map than it actually feels once you’re on a high-speed train. On my most recent trip, I booked an early train with iryo because I like arriving in Madrid with the whole day ahead of me. A little over an hour later, I was already stepping off at Atocha.

Zaragoza-Delicias train station
The distance between Zaragoza and Madrid is about 273 kilometers or around 170 miles. The high-speed trains will only take around 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete the journey between Zaragoza and Madrid, making it one of the quickest ways of traveling between these two cities. Once the train leaves Zaragoza-Delicias, the city will soon be out of sight and replaced by vast dry plains, which are characteristic of Aragon. The view outside is mainly fields and small towns in the distance and occasionally some farming areas. The view is quite calm and serene, and before you know it, your journey is already half over. Just as you are settling in your seat and enjoying the ride, you will start seeing the outskirts of Madrid.
I made my booking with Omio after considering a few different departure times. For this journey, I have selected an iryo train, mostly because it fitted well with my overall plans. One of the things that I have learned with this route is the importance of booking early, as I made my booking a month before the date of my journey and got a fare for under €30. It was easy to board the train at Zaragoza-Delicias. Once I had found my seat and got comfortable, the train started leaving the station, and the journey to Madrid started.
Zaragoza-Delicias is a modern station and easy to navigate, even if it’s your first time there. It serves as the city’s main hub for high-speed trains and long-distance routes across Spain. I usually arrive a little early when traveling by train. That morning I had enough time to walk through the station, grab a quick coffee, and watch a few trains coming and going before boarding.
The train arrived at Madrid Atocha, one of the most recognizable stations in Spain. Inside the station there’s a tropical garden that locals often refer to as “los jardines de Atocha”, and it’s always a surprising sight after stepping off a train. Since I had arrived a bit early, I stopped for a quick coffee inside the station before heading into the city. It cost around €3 and gave me a moment to pause before continuing the day in Madrid.
Trains between Zaragoza and Madrid run frequently throughout the day, with departures starting quite early — usually from around 7 a.m. — and continuing into the evening. I usually book a train around 9 a.m. for this route. It’s early enough to arrive in Madrid with most of the day ahead of me, but without having to wake up at sunrise. That flexibility makes the route easy to plan, since there are plenty of departures to choose from.
The iryo train felt modern and comfortable, especially since the journey was just over an hour long. It had good legroom, and the train was clean and quiet, which made the journey quite relaxed. One can bring regular luggage on the train, and there is room for small bags on top of the seats. However, on short trips like this, I’m traveling light anyway, so it’s easier to get on and off the train. The journey on the train is quite quick. Between checking messages, looking out the window, and just enjoying the relaxed pace of the train, the journey was over before it really felt like it had begun.
If you’re planning to take this route, it’s worth booking your ticket ahead of time. Prices can be quite low if you reserve early — I booked almost a month in advance and paid under €30 for my ticket. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €28 |
| Food & drinks | €3 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 31 |
